Egg groups are a way of classifying Pokémon in breeding.

Egg groups were introduced in the second generation. Similar to attributes, a Pokémon can belong to one or two egg groups at the same time, and egg groups are classified by the biological characteristics of Pokémon.

Egg groups cannot be viewed in the "Pokémon" series, and are generally recorded in strategy books or some side games.

Most of the Pokémon in the same evolution chain are in the same egg group, with the exception of Baby Pokémon, Nidona, Nidoqueen, and Shelling Ninja.

Below is a list of egg clusters sorted by in-game index number:
Monster: Like a monster, or more wild.

Water 1: Can be amphibious or multi-living.

Bug: It looks like a bug.

Flight: The appearance looks like birds, bats and other flying creatures.

Land: The largest egg group, most Pokémon living on land belong to this group.

Fairy: smaller or cuter.

Plants: Looks like plants.

Human form: walks on two legs.

Water 3: Invertebrates in water.

Minerals: Crystalline or silicon-based organisms.

Indeterminate: has no fixed appearance.

Water 2: Vertebrates like fish.

Variety Monster: As the name suggests, Diversity Monster is the only Pokémon in this group, and it can lay eggs with all Pokémon except the undiscovered group and Diversity Monster Group (regardless of gender).

Dragon: looks like a dragon.

Undiscovered: Cannot lay eggs with any Pokémon.

Unknown gender: It is not an egg group in the game data, but some occasions will classify Pokémon according to this, and it is also regarded as an egg group at this time.Pokémon in this egg group can only lay eggs with Ditto.

Ditto packs can lay eggs with any egg-group Pokémon except the Undiscovered group, which can only lay eggs with Pokémon of an unknown group.

Pokémon belonging to two egg groups at the same time can form chain inheritance. This genetic method can link unrelated Pokémon, allowing them to learn moves that they can't usually learn.
