High-level radioactive waste, also known as spent fuel, mainly comes from the burned nuclear fuel of nuclear power plants;

Low- and medium-level radioactive wastes come from discarded and decommissioned instruments and equipment used in nuclear power plants, wastes generated in the production and processing of nuclear fuel, etc.

The hazard composition level of nuclear waste can be summarized in one sentence, high-level waste, which accounts for 3% of the total, contributes 95% of the radioactivity.So it can be said that it is not required to dispose of all nuclear waste, as long as the 3% of high-level radioactive waste can be disposed of, it is almost equivalent to removing the curse on the head for the development of nuclear energy.

The total amount of high-level radioactive waste is very small, but it is very harmful. The nuclear waste we usually talk about mainly refers to this type of waste.The reason why spent fuel is so harmful is that it contains highly radioactive elements that are extremely harmful to the human body.

The depth of boreholes for deep geological storage of spent fuel is generally 3 to 5 kilometers below the ground. Due to the self-sealing of boreholes, the reversibility of spent fuel is very small.

The selection of deep burial sites in the United States is based on volcanic tuff.There are currently about 7 tons of spent fuel in the United States, stored in 72 commercial nuclear power plants.In addition, 2000 to 2400 tons of spent fuel are added each year.At present, three-quarters of the spent fuel is stored in the spent fuel pool in the reactor, and the rest is stored by dry method after spent fuel reprocessing; dry storage technology has become mature in the United States.

Sweden is based on granite, but the country's radioactive waste disposal agency designed a 5cm-thick copper-covered shielding tank that it believes will not corrode for 100 million years, surrounded by a thick layer of bentonite.

So the way of open treatment is to simply dig out the nuclear waste, and then bury it in a bottomless place.

The latter is another treatment method. The spent fuel treatment at the Rokkasho reprocessing plant in Japan and the Hague reprocessing plant in France is mainly based on the PUREX process.

Spent fuel is cut up, dissolved in some solvents, and then subjected to two rounds of extraction. In the first extraction cycle, extraction is performed using geometrically safe pulsed extraction columns and mixer-settlers. This cycle will separate most of the Fission products, uranium and plutonium.

In the open cycle, the hydrological requirements of the spent fuel deep burial site are extremely high, and there are uncertainties and site limitations.The Purex process is not only the process used in the reprocessing of light water reactor fuel, but also is being developed for the reprocessing of fast neutron breeder oxide fuel. The reprocessing plants in France and Japan are in operation, and the uranium and plutonium recovered in the process are returned to recycled in the reactor.This process has become the only one in practice in modern reprocessing plants.

Of course, this is just a compromise. In the final analysis, we still have no way to deal with the hidden danger, completely solve it, and can only keep it.

From the initial stage of the development of nuclear fission power generation technology to the present, spent fuel reprocessing has been the main foothold for a large number of so-called green environmentalists to attack nuclear power.

It is foreseeable that if this matter can really be solved, then they will usher in a peak period of development. After such a round of development, their ranking among central enterprises may not be able to move forward. .
