A Realistic Mount & Blade Game
#68 - Warning of Nature's Will
"Stand your ground!"
"Ready your spears!"
"Spear formation!"
The Swadian sergeants, already prepared for battle, showed no fear whatsoever.
Fully armed to the teeth, they were completely unafraid of the shambling skeletons emerging from the darkness and grey mist, not even bothering to raise their heavy, fan-shaped shields.
Instead, they gripped their cone-headed spears tightly with their chainmail-covered gauntlets.
These spears, nearly four meters long, were meticulously crafted by carpenters, blacksmiths, and weapon workshops. The front ends were clad in iron, making them fine weapons even by Calradian standards, and they thrust them forward fiercely!
Illuminated by the torches held high above the Swadian militiamen behind them,
countless chilling glints of light flashed in the dim environment.
And with each flash,
the undead skeletons attempting to escape the darkness and grey mist, wielding various decayed weapons or bones, were instantly shattered, their bones scattering across the ground with a chaotic 'clatter'!
For these top-tier, fifth-rank Swadian sergeants,
this battle
was easier and more relaxed than stabbing wooden dummies in the training camp!
At least the dummies were genuinely hard and resilient.
After a day of training,
their arm and abdominal muscles would feel sore and tired, requiring proper rest to recover the spent energy.
But these skeletons were different.
By simply aiming for the eye sockets where the flames of the soul flickered, and directly destroying their skulls, they could be effectively shattered.
They didn't even need to destroy the skull.
As long as the spearhead pierced the eye socket and touched the flickering, ghostly blue flame of the soul,
they could directly extinguish the soul fire, destroying the energy circuit of these lowest-level undead creatures.
Which was equivalent to killing all these undead creatures on the spot!
"…" Even Bunduk's expression changed strangely as he watched this scene.
These undead creatures…
In his memory, and even in the legends of Calradia, they were supposed to be extremely terrifying…
But they seemed pitifully weak.
"Mr. Bunduk…" Behind Bunduk, the faces of the hired crossbowmen were hesitant.
At this moment, these 30 hired crossbowmen, already dispersed behind the Swadian sergeants and militiamen, holding their crossbows, were not just hesitant; they felt utterly helpless.
Against such weak opponents, it was clear that they, the crossbowmen, were not needed.
Not even the Swadian sergeants were needed!
The Swadian militiamen, and even the villagers behind, could handle them!
Shooting now, besides wasting bolts, would be essentially useless.
Moreover, these crossbowmen understood that
volley after volley of shots would not be as effective as precise shots.
If the bolts pierced non-lethal parts of these skeletons, such as the ribs or chest, instead of the skull where the energy circuit was concentrated, what use would it be?
Undead creatures were already dead.
Besides the skull, the container for the soul fire, there were essentially no absolute vital points!
Even the seasoned thugs from the Lake Rat Gang, who had spread out to the sides of the spear formation to defend the flanks, were now looking at each other in dismay.
They easily dodged the clumsy attacks of a few skeletons or zombies.
Then, they used their woodland axes to cleave the faces of these skeletons and zombies, the sharp axe blades destroying the energy circuit of the soul fire within their heads.
And just like that, they dealt with these undead creatures.
Very easily!
"You bandits, come over here!"
These seasoned thugs from the Lake Rat Gang, who never paid much attention to discipline, didn't want to waste any more energy.
Instead, they directly turned their heads and beckoned the 30 bandits following behind them.
They signaled these fellows, armed with butcher knives, to go up and test the quality of these undead creatures.
However, after the bandits, holding butcher knives, their faces solemn, their eyes filled with excitement, easily dodged the attacks of the skeletons and zombies, and then thrust their sharp butcher knives into the eye sockets of the skeletons and zombies,
turning these skeletons and zombies into useless piles of bone fragments and decaying corpses once again,
these seasoned thugs from the Lake Rat Gang completely retreated to the second line of battle.
Watching the bandits slaughter.
"Lord Shen Mu, the true strength of these undead monsters seems to be even less than that of ordinary villagers."
Bunduk suggested at this moment: "We don't need to keep the top-tier Swadian sergeants at the front; we can let the Swadian militiamen, and those villagers still behind, come down and fight these low-level undead monsters."
"Yes, let's do that then." Shen Mu nodded, agreeing with Bunduk's suggestion.
That was indeed the case.
So, behind Shen Mu, one of the seasoned thugs from the Lake Rat Gang immediately turned around to relay the order.
Within a few minutes, footsteps echoed from the entrance passage behind them.
The villagers, already eager to try, their faces filled with excitement, yearning to make a contribution, all grabbed their wooden clubs and pitchforks and swarmed forward.
Following Shen Mu's orders, they began to spread out around the entrance of the garage!
The villagers, armed with pitchforks or long wooden sticks, formed the outer perimeter.
The spear formation they created looked quite similar to the real thing.
After all, the Swadian Kingdom would train these villagers during the agricultural off-season.
Although they couldn't compare to even the Swadian recruits who could train and fight full-time,
as long as they united, they still had the ability to resist small groups of bandits and robbers!
Especially now.
These undead monsters in the darkness, though numerous, had combat power even less than that of bandits.
These villagers even had the upper hand!
"Kill!"
200 villagers, holding torches high, began to spread out across this underground garage, which could accommodate four apartment buildings and had an extremely large underground area.
Within the small area of the entrance, their numbers even exceeded those of the undead monsters.
Locally, they formed an advantage in numbers and combat power!
So much so that the Swadian sergeants, hired crossbowmen, and seasoned thugs from the Lake Rat Gang that Shen Mu had brought down from the village to prevent any unexpected situations
were not needed at all.
They could only stand by in the rear, as a reserve team, to prevent any special circumstances from occurring.
"After experiencing real combat, these villagers will quickly grow."
Bunduk watched from behind as one torch after another began to advance deeper into the underground garage.
The excited shouts, the crisp sounds of bones scattering, and the muffled thuds of corpses falling to the ground reached his ears, and his expression was somewhat complicated: "However, in Calradia, it is said that these undead monsters look very terrifying… but now it seems that they are only terrifying in appearance."
The skeletons and zombies he encountered now were truly too weak.
If they were in Calradia,
these undead monsters would, at most, cause some harassment to the villages.
They wouldn't even qualify as an attack!
They would just be a minor nuisance.
"Don't let your guard down, Bunduk."
Shen Mu's face didn't show much relief.
Because right now, his heart, the place where the fragment of the Will of Nature was bound, still gave him a special sense of unease.
He gently placed his hand on the heart area of his chainmail.
Shen Mu looked at the five bonfires that had already been lit around him, and the villagers in front, holding torches, who were starting to advance deeper into the underground garage.
Shen Mu took two steps forward, his gaze fixed on a load-bearing pillar.
Because on the load-bearing pillar, the very common symbol before the advent of the undead rules was painted with blue paint —
Underground Garage Level One, Zone A3.
"This is the first level of the underground garage." Shen Mu pursed his lips slightly: "And this apartment's underground garage seems to have two levels."
Thinking of this, the feeling of unease in Shen Mu's heart grew stronger.
Clearly.
This was a warning from the fragment of the Will of Nature!
