American comics: I drew Superman during the Great Depression
Chapter 113: Unexpected Panic
"Hey, kid, hand over all the valuable things you have on you!"
In the comics, Superman received a "warm" welcome as soon as he arrived in Gotham City.
An armed robber stopped him and stole his camera and all his valuables.
"It's such a chaotic city, just like real-life New York."
Seeing what happened to Superman in the comics, Little John couldn't help but sigh.
The crime rate in New York has always been high, especially after the Great Depression. The economic recession caused more people to take risks and embark on the road of crime. Even some homeless homeless people commit crimes just to be imprisoned.
Because there are walls that can block the wind, food to fill the stomach, and even specially prepared new clothes.
Of course, in real life, most people can only swallow their anger when faced with robbers.
However, Superman in the comics clearly doesn't need to be this way.
Soon, Clark, who was robbed, changed into a costume and transformed into the omnipotent Superman to catch the criminal who had robbed him.
Robber: "Who are you?"
Superman: "Superman!"
Standing there and letting the robber finish the bullets in his hand, Superman appeared in front of him in a flash.
Superman: "Do you know the mysterious man who showed up in Gotham City?"
Robber: "I don't know what you're talking about?"
Faced with Superman's questioning, the robber was reluctant to cooperate. Seeing this, Superman grabbed his arm.
Superman: "You are quite strict! I want to see if you can say it!"
Man in purple: "Let go of my hand!"
Seeing Superman grabbing his arm, the robber struggled and shouted.
Superman: "No problem, just grab your feet."
Seeing this, Superman let go of his arms in a very "empathetic" manner, grabbed the robber's feet, jumped up, and landed on the wire.
Seeing Superman catching him walking on the wire, the robber shouted in horror.
Robber: "Stop! Stop! We will be electrocuted!"
Superman: "No, we won't!"
Superman: "The bird sat on the telephone wire and didn't get electrocuted."
Catching a robber and walking on a telephone pole in Gotham City, Superman looked relaxed while the robber was already frightened.
Superman: "What is that, Wayne Enterprises? Let's get up there and take a look."
Holding the robber in one hand, Superman came to a tall building and jumped to the top of the Wayne Building.
Superman: "What a view!"
Robber: "Help! Help!"
Standing atop the Wayne Building, the tallest building in Gotham City, Superman looked down at the night view of the city and sighed. Then he pointed to a tall building opposite and asked the robber in his hand.
Superman: "I was wondering if we could jump all the way up to that building?"
Robber: "No! Don't!"
Faced with Superman's proposal, the robber protested wildly, but Superman jumped over regardless, and the two men were instantly swallowed up by the night.
Superman: "Mistake, damn it!"
Then, in the last frame of the comic, there was only a seemingly annoyed cry from Superman.
"What's next?!"
Watching this scene, Little John held his breath and turned over the manuscript paper in his hand. What appeared in front of him was the story about the King of Pranksters that he had read before.
Seeing this, Little John couldn't help but blurt out.
"What happened to Superman and the mugger, and who is the mysterious man in Gotham City?"
Many questions lingered in Little John's mind, but the comics in front of him did not give him the answers he wanted.
"You have to ask Mr. Colin next."
Reaching out to snatch the comic paper from Little John's hand, Jacob said while smoothing the wrinkles on the paper.
Colin gave him these drawings before leaving. If Little John wants to know the subsequent plot, he can only wait until the other party comes back.
"but……"
Facing Jacob's explanation, although he knew that what the other party said was reasonable, looking at the comic in his hand, Little John still had some unspeakable feelings in his heart. It was clear that the story of Superman in the comic had reached a critical turning point, but it happened that Stopping there, it was like a hundred claws scratching my heart, it was unbearable.

That night, Little John couldn't sleep the whole night because of the plot of the comic.
The next day, that is, weekend morning, readers who have been waiting for a long time.
I also saw the latest serial plot of "Superman" in "The Courier".
Different from Little John who had a glimpse of the subsequent plot.
What readers saw in the newspaper was only the content of the previous issue of the story, which was the story where the King of Pranks appeared.
Therefore, they still have a week before Little John is tossing and turning.
Even so, when they saw in the serial that the King of Pranksters deceived him into obtaining the right to use English and levied taxes on all people who use English, readers still sighed. They were shocked by the King of Pranksters' unconstrained crimes.
Immediately afterwards, I began to worry about whether there really is such a method in reality that can allow people to defraud the right to use English.
At first, this was just a concern for comics readers.
However, soon after the publication of the Courier, more and more people who saw this issue had the same idea, and as the story spread, it became more and more exaggerated, and finally became "Because of financial difficulties, Hoover signed the latest bill to impose taxes on all English speakers."
Because of the rumors, New York City and surrounding cities fell into panic, and the report on the radio program that night made this matter a national event, and media from all over the country also reported the news. For a time, people's anger towards Hoover and their concerns about the upcoming tax occupied the pages of all newspapers the next day.
Tens of thousands of complaint letters filled the mailboxes of New York City, and panicked people began to gather and wanted to march in front of the city government to protest the decision of the English tax.
……
“…At that time, many people believed the comics in the newspapers and thought that the government was going to impose an English tax on citizens. In front of the New York City government, a team of more than a thousand people marched. It was not until the mayor came out to deny the fact that the incident was calmed down. This was a situation that none of us expected. It was from that time that we really understood that Superman had become a well-known cultural symbol. The Superman comics also became more popular after this incident. Everyone wanted to see what the guy who caused panic in the United States looked like…” - Excerpted from "Superman and Me in 1931"
