Anime: About That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
#42 - Sally's father's former teammate
“Welcome, adventurers.”
At the village entrance, Village Chief Kenny, his face showing slight signs of age, wore an enthusiastic smile as he hurried forward to shake the hand of one of the adventurers, displaying his warmth and welcome.
“Greetings, Village Chief. My name is Leicester, and these are my squad members. Furthermore, regarding the letter we entrusted to the Adventurers Guild to deliver to you, I believe you should already understand why we've come this time.”
After speaking, Leicester forced a smile onto his slender, gloomy face. However, coupled with his cyclopean appearance, it looked awkward no matter how one viewed it. The few adventurers behind him, dressed in adventurer attire, also quickly put on smiles.
“I know, I know. Chris was once a member of Sir Leicester's squad. Your visit this time is to see the child of your former teammate, Sally, and to hand over the things Chris entrusted to you for safekeeping!”
Upon hearing Leicester's words, the smile on Kenny's face became even more enthusiastic. His slightly narrowed eyes made him appear like a truly kind old man. Chris, whom Kenny mentioned, was Sally's deceased father.
“It seems you are well aware, Village Chief. In that case, I won't say much more. Please summon Chris's child immediately so we can hand over the things Chris left with us for safekeeping. After all, we are adventurers and have tasks to complete.”
Leicester glanced at the enthusiastic Kenny before him, a hint of mockery flashing in his eyes. Then, he pretended to be anxious, looking around the village as if, as he said, they were pressed for time.
“This... that....”
In the next second, Kenny, who had been incredibly enthusiastic, began to avert his gaze, his hands nervously clutching his clothes, and his voice stuttered.
“What, you don't trust us!?”
Looking at Kenny before him, Leicester narrowed his only remaining eye, and his entire aura turned gloomy. The adventurers behind him also looked over, their hands resting on their weapons.
“No... no, how could I deceive you, Sir Leicester? It's just... it's just....”
Kenny trembled, raising his head with a look of extreme fear, stammering as he spoke, but he was too afraid to articulate clearly.
“Just what? Old man, you better spit it out!”
In the next second, a large hand grabbed Kenny. Jean, an adventurer who had been standing behind Leicester, had long been displeased with Captain Leicester's dragging plan. It was just an ordinary village; wouldn't it be better to just rush in and seize the person? Why bother pretending and wasting time?
“Jean, stop!”
Just as Kenny's face was turning purple from suffocation and his body began to convulse, Leicester's gloomy voice rang out. Jean, the adventurer who had been tightly gripping Kenny, hesitated for a few seconds before reluctantly tossing Kenny to the ground.
Watching Kenny gasping for breath, his face filled with fear, and the villagers on the side who dared not speak out, Jean spat on the ground in displeasure and walked aside.
“Village Chief Kenny, I believe you've seen that my teammates are different from me. They aren't so easy to talk to. So, can we see Sally now?”
Leicester squatted in front of Kenny, a false smile on his face as he spoke slowly, but his eyes were so gloomy that they inspired fear. It was evident that Leicester was becoming impatient.
“Please, adventurers, wait a little while. Sally and Grandma Orca, who adopted her, went to a nearby town not long ago. But I guarantee that you will definitely be able to see Sally at the latest the day after tomorrow.”
Looking at the gloomy Leicester before him, Kenny stumbled and crawled to Leicester's feet, quickly relaying Sally's information and loudly promising that he would bring Sally to see them at the latest the day after tomorrow.
“Oh! Is that so? Then we'll trust you for now, Village Chief. Surely you won't disappoint us, will you?”
Saying this, Leicester turned his head to survey the surrounding villagers, then looked at Kenny with a smile. The meaning he wanted to convey was self-evident.
“Of course, of course! I guarantee that you will definitely be able to see Sally the day after tomorrow!”
Kenny nodded vigorously, his eyes full of pleading as he looked at Leicester, completely appearing to be terrified of death.
“Very well, then we'll give you two days. But remember, if we don't see Sally after two days, you know the consequences.”
“Yes, yes, yes, we understand, we understand!”
Saying this, Kenny quickly scrambled up from the ground, waved his hand, and called over a bystander villager, instructing him to lead the adventurers to a vacant house in the village to rest and prepare food for them.
Regarding Kenny's order, the villager only gave him a deep look. Out of decades of respect and trust for Kenny, he didn't say much, just silently led the adventurers away.
“Village Chief...”
Just as the adventurers left, Auster, who guarded the village watchtower, rushed over, wanting to question him about why he didn't tell the adventurers that Sally was in the forest not far outside the village, but he was stopped by Kenny as soon as he opened his mouth.
“Auster, you don't need to say anything. I know what you want to say, but you should also know what kind of people Chris's former teammates are. If we tell them Sally's location, what will happen, I don't need to say it, right?”
Saying this, Kenny's eyes stared intently at Auster. In fact, he knew that those adventurers were indeed Sally's father Chris's teammates, but after Grandma Orlan brought Sally back, the villagers knew some of the things that had happened to Sally.
Precisely because of this, after Grandma Orlan died, although they drove Sally out of the village, they did not expel her from the area. Even the villagers would subconsciously choose to ignore the matter of Sally saving those slimes.
“But, if we don't hand Sally over to them, those adventurers will definitely kill us!”
Auster stubbornly withstood Kenny's sharp gaze like a knife, gritting his teeth as he voiced his thoughts. After Auster finished speaking, the nearby villagers also echoed in low voices. After all, although they sympathized with Sally, they would never sacrifice their lives for her.
Of course, if they were really willing to give their lives for Sally, then they wouldn't have driven Sally out of the village out of fear after Grandma Orlan died.
Kenny swept his gaze around, and most of the villagers he looked at lowered their heads, but there were also a few who stubbornly stared at Kenny. In their hearts, Sally, a mere half-human, half-demon monster, was well worth exchanging for their lives.
“Leave this matter to me, I will resolve everything!”
Looking at the villagers like this, Kenny sighed inwardly. Compared to those adventurers, Sally now had an even more terrifying existence by her side. Just as Kenny was about to say something, his expression suddenly shifted, and he involuntarily glanced in a certain direction.
He raised his head, looked at the villagers before him, said he would handle everything, and then turned and walked into the village.
