Anime: About That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
#74 - Abnormalities on the battlefield
Upon the battlefield, thick with blood mist, the roars of the demons grew ever more frenzied. The black armor of the soldiers was stained crimson with blood. In the very center, a multitude of adventurers were locked in desperate combat. The prolonged fighting had completely drained their mana and stamina, leaving them to mechanically swing their weapons, instinctively slaying the demons before them.
“Ah!”
Suddenly, a shrill scream echoed in Karan's ears. Having just cleaved a hobgoblin in two, Karan instinctively looked towards the sound, only to see a novice adventurer, weakened by exhaustion and carelessness, had his thigh seized by a dying demon with only half a body remaining. Its sharp teeth had completely pierced his bone.
The intense pain caused him to scream instinctively, his longsword hacking incessantly at the demon biting him, but to no avail. The demon had already died, using its last ounce of strength to bite him.
Crack!
Abruptly, a hideous maw appeared behind the young adventurer. With a sound of shattering bones and tearing flesh, the young adventurer was bitten in half by the demon. His desperate gaze turned towards Karan in the distance, wanting to say something, but the demon that bit him opened its maw and swallowed him whole.
Clang!
“Hey! Karan, what are you doing?”
At that moment, a spark ignited behind Karan's head. A pitch-black snake, half a meter long, was flicked away by a dagger. Santi emerged from Karan's shadow, looking at him with a stern expression as she questioned him.
If she hadn't been there, Karan would have been pierced by the demon and drained dry.
“Sorry.”
Karan also noticed the commotion and quickly apologized to Santi. He then raised his greatsword and cleaved an approaching demon in two. Afterwards, he looked around, his gaze sweeping across the frenzied battle between demons and humans. The ground was littered with corpses.
These were only the recently deceased. The corpses of demons and humans who had died earlier had long been trampled into a layer of flesh and mud. A closer look would reveal that both demons and humans were fighting atop the bodies of their comrades or enemies, and beneath the corpses was a thick layer of minced flesh.
“Be careful. Nighttime battles are the most dangerous.”
Behind him, Santi once again reminded Karan before her body gradually sank back into his shadow. In the distance, the sun was setting, casting a bloody glow across the battlefield. As the last rays of the setting sun disappeared, the entire Blood-colored Plain was gradually plunged into darkness.
And darkness… was the demons' domain. Most human soldiers lacked night vision, but demons were different. Most demons had night vision, and some were even born for the night, like the snake demon that had ambushed Karan earlier.
“Ah! Ah! Ah!!!”
Minutes later, as the night completely descended, a series of shrill screams suddenly erupted. Large numbers of soldiers and adventurers collapsed, writhing on the ground. Many soldiers removed their helmets, tearing at their hair with both hands, even ripping out large clumps of hair and scalp without stopping.
The adventurers without armor to protect them had already stopped struggling. From their eye sockets, black snake heads emerged, their dark bodies slowly crawling out and disappearing into the darkness.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Suddenly, a series of thunderous booms echoed. Karan quickly looked behind him and saw massive fireballs streaking across the sky. The intense heat even filled the battlefield with a faint scent of roasted flesh. The terrifying flames crashed into the demon army like falling meteorites.
“War machines.”
Karan's expression turned grave as he raised his hand to shield his eyes. The violent winds forced him backwards. Several kilometers in front of him, massive fireballs were rapidly expanding, exploding, and rising into mushroom clouds.
Rumor has it that these war machines were purchased by the Ister Kingdom from the Eastern Empire. Each one possessed the power to destroy a city with a single strike, but due to their immense power, each strike would render the war machine unusable.
“Kill!”
At that moment, a unified battle cry echoed behind Karan. A large number of soldiers surged forward like a tide, instantly surpassing Karan and plunging into the demon army.
“Adventurer, your task is complete.”
A soldier walked up to Karan, his eyes behind his helmet appraising him with a hint of appreciation. He still held some respect for these cheap, useful, and powerful adventurers, as the weaker ones had already died in the daytime battles.
“Mm.”
Karan nodded, raised his weapon, and began to walk towards the rear. Scattered figures around him were doing the same. Of the original multitude of adventurers, less than three hundred remained alive, the rest having perished on the battlefield, leaving behind not even corpses.
“Karan! Look at the ground!”
At that moment, Santi's voice suddenly rang in Karan's ears. Santi emerged from the shadows, her face grave as she looked at the ground. The flesh and mud that covered the ground were slowly disappearing, as if being swallowed by something.
“This is?”
Karan followed Santi's gaze and noticed the ground's movement. Then he looked around and saw that the adventurers beside him had already left. Soldiers, who had rested and conserved their energy all day, were roaring as they charged forward, completely oblivious to the situation on the ground.
“Could there be an underground river or cavern?”
Driven by some curiosity, Karan followed the direction of the flowing flesh and mud. Minutes later, Karan stopped before a sunken patch of ground. A large amount of flesh and blood was flowing into it continuously, and occasionally a few corpses were swallowed as well.
But everything was so subtle. If not for Santi's reminder, Karan would never have noticed such a thing.
“Karan, do you want to take a look?”
“Forget it.”
Karan shook his head, stood up, and walked straight towards the edge of the battlefield. Seeing this, Santi didn't say anything more and simply followed.
A minute after the two left, the pool of flesh and blood began to ripple. A slime emerged from it, watching Karan and Santi's departing figures before silently sinking back in, returning to its original state.
Similar scenes were unfolding unnoticed in various corners of the battlefield. The flesh, blood, and corpses accumulated over the long war were slowly disappearing, while the demons and humans fighting atop them, completely blinded by bloodlust, remained completely unaware of the situation.
