Azeroth Monster Manual

#20 - Stone Guard

“L-Lord, are you sure this will work?”

Hemit stared at the strangely behaving, nose-twitching Ayr, and said hesitantly.

“Don't worry, although it's a bit embarrassing, finding Mosh is the top priority.”

“But, if you can really smell that strange gem, why not just look for that beast directly?”

“Do you think I haven't thought of what you've thought of? Mortal wisdom! The footprints disappear at the edge of the lake. Besides Mosh's footprints, I can't smell anything else…”

“Then…”

“For someone who's somewhat famous as a hunter, can't you see the common sense that even children understand?”

“You mean?”

Hemit seemed to realize something and said excitedly:

“That beast is in the lake?”

“At least you're not completely stupid. That Direhorn is no longer an ordinary beast. That mysterious gem has changed everything about it.

Strictly speaking, it no longer belongs to the category of living things, or rather—it's now just an unknown monster wearing a Direhorn skin…

Also, we only know that its sanity seems to be questionable, but we know nothing about its other information. So, do you understand the significance of this colorful gem to us?”

“So, Lord, you're looking for this crystal to lure that beast out of the water?”

“More or less. Before that, I have to figure out the secrets of this crystal…”

As Ayr spoke, he raised his head and twitched his nose, concentrating on distinguishing the scents in the air with his eyes closed.

It's not that elves have sensitive noses, nor is it that Ayr is having an attack; the cause of all this is just a skill.

【Super Olfactory Sense】

Six years ago, Ayr, who had just obtained the Interdimensional Teleportation spell, discovered a magic coordinate summary of various maps of Kalimdor in the Sun King's library. His curiosity piqued, he immediately followed the map and used the Teleportation spell.

It's unknown whether it was because his skills were lacking or because the ancient tome had lost its effectiveness, after all, it originated from 4,000 years ago.

Originally, the teleportation coordinates were designated for the goblin port city of Ratchet, but instead, he was teleported to the southernmost part of the Barrens—the barbaric capital of the quilboar who called themselves the descendants of Agamaggan—Razorfen Downs.

Although Ayr was only 9 years old at the time, and his spatial magic skills were mediocre, the young him was already a 5-ring mage.

In addition, after years of exploiting the high-ranking Quel'Thalas officials, it's no exaggeration to say that Ayr at this time already possessed 0.4 Anasterians of strength.

Sun King: As a unit of measurement, am I proud?

Facing the violent quilboar high priest, Kargath Spinebreaker.

Although Ayr didn't gain an advantage under her wild natural magic, he still managed to sneak away with several quilboar cubs and retreat safely.

Fortunately, those quilboar cubs possessed a very pure Agamaggan bloodline, which is also the origin of Ar疣 later on.

And Ar疣 not only brought Ayr 1% of brain domain development and teaching materials, it also brought Ayr a seemingly useless ability at the time—Super Olfactory Sense.

Many people may think that dogs have a very sensitive sense of smell, but pigs have 2-3 times more than dogs.

“Found it!”

Ayr looked at the huge cave in front of him, revealing a vigilant expression. He rarely put away his lazy posture, took off the 【Protector of Freedom】 he was carrying on his back, and clenched it tightly in his hand.

“I smell danger. Cheer up, Hemit. The challenge we face may not be simple.”

Hemit looked at the serious expression on the young man's face, which he had never seen before, and became nervous.

In his impression, Lord Ayr was always in that lazy and easy-going posture, and only during tense experiments would he reveal this solemn expression.

The old dwarf tightened the collar of his windbreaker, took down the weathered double-barreled shotgun, and began to load ammunition one by one.

Hemit followed closely behind Ayr, walking into the dark cave.

As soon as they entered the cave, a fresh breeze blew in their faces, proving that the cave was not one-way.

Ayr cast a Light spell, startling a patch of small red dots on the top of the cave, which turned out to be bats living there.

Hemit was startled, and even his just-lightened footsteps became heavy.

“Sorry, Lord, I'm too nervous.”

The old dwarf scratched his head embarrassedly.

“Shh!”

Ayr stopped the old dwarf's movements. He crawled down and pressed his ear to the damp ground.

“Hemit, did you hear any sound?”

Ayr asked uncertainly.

“Sound? No, did you have auditory hallucinations, Lord?”

Before Hemit could finish speaking, the ground began to tremble slightly, and a few small stones fell from the top of the cave, landing right on the dwarf's shiny forehead.

“Get out first, something's coming.”

Ayr turned around nimbly, grabbed the dwarf's arm, and retreated backward.

Hemit: Are you kidding me? Don't I have legs?

The rumbling footsteps in the cave grew closer and closer, and Ayr also used all his strength, finally exiting the cave just before that "big guy" was about to approach.

Looking at the old dwarf being carried by the young man, he was already dizzy and foaming at the mouth, which shows how fast Ayr was.

But with Ayr's powerful physique far surpassing that of a high-level warrior, he was only barely faster than the "big guy" in the cave.

Casually throwing the dwarf aside, Ayr finally saw the true face of that guy.

“Stone Guardian!”

Ayr was a little surprised. The "big guy" in front of him didn't strictly belong to any kind of creature, because it was entirely made of stone.

Without a neck or waist, the whole body was carved like a boulder, with circles of mysterious runes wrapped around its thick hands and feet.

With Ayr's erudition, he couldn't even understand the meaning and structure of these runes.

“Unknown flesh and blood creature detected, danger level - extremely high, executing extermination order.”

Just as Ayr was pondering, the huge stone man in front of him said a series of incomprehensible human common language.

Its huge feet stomped heavily on the ground like prehistoric beasts, stirring up a cloud of dust, and kinetic energy turned into speed. Like a thunderclap from the ground, the Stone Guardian rushed towards Ayr at an incredible speed.

“Careful!”

Hemit's eyes widened, and he looked at the dying elf youth who was hit with despair.

His trembling legs no longer trembled, but quickly raised the double-barreled shotgun and roared at the behemoth that was gradually approaching him.

“Ah, die, die, die, die…”

The old dwarf fired shot after shot at the behemoth that was approaching him.

The wisps of blue smoke dissipated, and the unscathed Stone Guardian continued to approach him, the rumbling footsteps sounded, and the flat ground began to crack.

“Target - deformed earth elemental, danger level - extremely low, flesh and blood curse detected, suggestion to eliminate…”

Tears blurred his eyes, and Hemit knelt on the ground, completely giving up resistance.

“I messed everything up, I'm sorry Catherine, I'm sorry Elnor, I'm sorry… I'm sorry Ayr.”
