Azeroth Monster Manual

#59 - Improved Frostbolt

“So, you're saying that Silvermoon City's contestant is actually a lowly gnome?”

Antonidas looked at the gnome who had just entered with a surprised expression. He looked like a child, standing awkwardly in the center of the square, the thesis in his hand bearing obvious sweat stains and creases.

“That's not just a lowly gnome…”

Aier emphasized the word “just,” which was obviously discriminatory.

“His name is Millhouse, and he is a man destined to step onto the stage of history. Although he is still very young, I see a certain quality in him.”

“Alright, Lord Salonas, what quality do you see in that little gnome?”

Antonidas hid the disdain in his eyes well, but Aier still heard a hint of it in his tone.

“I see in him a quality that many Kirin Tor mages do not possess.”

Aier looked serious, watching Millhouse, who looked nervous in the center of the square, and a smile appeared on the corner of his mouth.

“Unfettered imagination and full of drive for execution.”

“What?”

Antonidas wanted to continue asking, but found that the young man was no longer paying attention to him, which made him feel somewhat embarrassed.

“Hmph, deliberately mystifying things.”

The Archmage had a very bad premonition in his heart, but he breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the human contestant he had carefully selected entering the arena.

“Millhouse, a first-year student from the Dalaran Magic Academy, do you have anything to say to everyone?”

The little gnome was obviously nervous when faced with the host Edman's question.

He clenched the thesis in his hand tightly, and the originally smooth paper became wrinkled.

“I… I… I…”

Millhouse trembled all over, his teeth chattering, but he didn't say a complete sentence.

“Hahaha.”

“Shh…”

“Go down, little gnome, it's feeding time.”

The audience looked at the bewildered little gnome and burst into malicious laughter and abuse.

Tears welled up in his eyes, and just as little Millhouse was about to turn around and run away, he saw the elf boy smiling at him.

That perfect face was covered with a layer of filter under the rendering of the morning sun, as if it was glowing.

The little gnome stared blankly at that face, stunned in place.

The audience's booing became more and more intense. Worshiping the strong and despising the weak may be the nature of Azeroth adventurers.

“For Aier!”

The noisy voices disappeared instantly, and the noisy adventurers were as if their throats had been pinched, and they collectively lost their voices.

“For Aier!”

The little gnome closed his eyes and shouted with all his strength.

The originally sharp voice became even more ear-piercing in the gnome's hoarse shout, but the crowd still stared at him blankly, as if they had been hit by a hold spell.

“Roar!”

“For Aier!”

“That gnome is not bad, huh?”

“Little gnome, I support you!”

The two poles reversed, and the audience, who had been scolding just now, instantly praised.

Aier smiled happily. He didn't look at Antonidas's expression, but he knew that his well-maintained face must be very dark now.

“The two contestants have already had a brief understanding of each other. Without further ado, please submit your respective theses to the judges for review.”

After the host finished speaking, he handed the human mage's and the little gnome's theses to Antonidas and Aier respectively.

Antonidas picked up the corner of the thesis with disgust. The gnome had messed up the snow-white paper so badly, and the wet sweat stains and creases made the Archmage frown.

Aier, on the other hand, watched with relish, clicking his tongue from time to time.

Time passed quietly, and after the twelve judges had read the theses in their hands, the host asked:

“It seems that our judges have read all the theses of the two contestants. Speaker, Lord Salonas, can we now enter the next stage?”

“Yes.”

The young man and the Archmage said in unison.

“Then, please invite our blue contestant to personally display his masterpiece.”

Before the host could finish speaking, a young human mage couldn't wait to stand up.

First, he bowed to the judges, and then this cheerful Level 1 mage began to explain his new spell.

“Hello everyone, I am xxx. Next, I will bring you the latest spell I invented…”

After the human mage narrated his thesis, he began to chant spells and show it to everyone.

As the spell ended, a Frostbolt flew out shakily, and a small ice crystal suddenly split off during the flight.

With a crisp snap, the Frostbolt and the small ice crystal exploded on the target that had been set up in advance. Because the power was too weak, only a thin layer of frost was left on the target.

The human mage scratched his head somewhat shyly, but was met with a burst of laughter from the crowd.

“That… haha… is that human trying to make me laugh to death?”

“A boulder thrown by a snow monster is stronger than this weak spell. It's really funny.”

Antonidas stood up and cleared his throat, and the originally noisy crowd gradually quieted down.

“We must look at the essence through the phenomenon, instead of blindly expressing our opinions.”

The Archmage's words made the mages who were booing lower their heads.

“This spell is not as simple as you think. Even when I first saw it, I couldn't help but marvel at its creator.

In order to prove the fairness of this competition, I will demonstrate this spell to you next…”

Antonidas stepped out of the crowd and walked dozens of meters away from the target, and began to chant spells.

Frost magic gathered, and the Archmage cast the spell with one hand, and even continued to explain with ease.

“I believe many people have read the competition rules. That's right, what we want is not those fancy unique spells, but practicality, a versatile spell that can be used by most mages and even apprentices.”

A solid Frostbolt quickly took shape, but it did not fly out, which showed the Archmage's strong control.

“Has everyone noticed this Frostbolt? Except for the magic power and control, it is no different from the Frostbolt of the contestant just now. Now start splitting the spell circuit of the Frostbolt. This kind of splitting is very dangerous and is not recommended for beginners…”

Gnome Tommy recorded Antonidas's explanation with swift strokes, and there were also a group of interested people around him, quickly recording in their notebooks.

“The reason why the Frostbolt is called an arrow is because of its strong penetrating power and near-sonic flight speed. This contestant is very smart. He did not change this excellent characteristic, but instead took a different approach to split the Frostbolt…”

The dark blue Frostbolt floated in Antonidas's palm, making a "buzzing" sound from time to time. As the Archmage explained, the originally sharp "arrowhead" slowly shrank, until it was only half the original size, and five small "arrowheads" appeared around the arrowhead.

As the spell took shape, Antonidas waved his hand casually, and the modified Frostbolt flew towards the target like a bullet.

“Tuk tuk tuk.”

A gust of wind blew past, and the Frostbolt pierced straight through the target.

Edman picked up the target with a look of surprise and walked around in front of the audience.

The originally smooth wooden target had a large hole and five small holes surrounding it. The edges of these six holes were as smooth as a mirror, and there were no rough debris left when the spell penetrated the target.

“It's like… it's like these six holes existed originally.”

An expert Intermediate Mage said in disbelief.

“That's right, the Speaker is too strong.”

Antonidas looked at the six holes on the target with satisfaction and continued.

“The penetrating power and destructive power of this spell have doubled, and the only thing sacrificed is that little bit of insignificant speed.

The key is that as long as there is enough proficiency and rich experience, then this modified Frostbolt can be skillfully applied even by a fledgling Level 1 mage.”

“Clap clap clap…”

The audience applauded from the bottom of their hearts, and the mage apprentices and low-level mages all looked at Antonidas with longing.

“Congratulations, this spell is indeed very good.”

Aier applauded and praised the Archmage.

Before Antonidas could humbly say a few words, the young man changed the subject and continued.

“But Millhouse's spell is more groundbreaking and innovative. This competition is already without suspense.”

“Then let's wait and see.”
