Dragon's Origin

#694 - The last step (top)

While marveling at the rich tones that the versatile piano could express, Grandmaster Yu suddenly heard Wang Sheng's words and immediately realized that there was a great opportunity here.

Wang Sheng had always said that he couldn't read music, so whether it was 'Pipa Language' or 'Ambush from Ten Sides,' Wang Sheng would hum it out himself, and Grandmaster Yu would write it down. But now Wang Sheng was saying that there was a brand new way of notation, which meant that Grandmaster Yu definitely hadn't seen it before and hadn't even come into contact with it.

"Tell me about it," Grandmaster Yu was the kind of person who would become obsessed with anything related to musical instruments and music. He immediately disregarded the grandmasters around him and said eagerly to Wang Sheng.

A dozen or so grandmasters were waiting for Wang Sheng to play the piano and see the results of their hard work, but Wang Sheng suddenly came up with this, leaving everyone baffled.

"Well, I know how to build a piano, how to tune it, and how to compose for it, but I can't play it," Wang Sheng could only explain to the grandmasters with a wry smile, "I still need Grandmaster Yu to do it."

Everyone understood as soon as they heard this and nodded in realization. That's right, if Wang Sheng could fight, cook, sculpt, and do calligraphy, and also make pianos and play them, then Wang Sheng would be defying the heavens. It was normal that he couldn't play, perfectly normal.

Seeing the situation, it was clear that the old man Yu wouldn't be available for a while. Grandmaster Lu waved his hand at Wang Sheng, "You two tinker around, just let us know when you're done. We'll go drink."

Under the care of Steward Wang, a group of grandmasters went to the Marquis's residence to drink together. Only Wang Sheng and Grandmaster Yu were left at the scene, as well as a few guards hidden in the shadows who didn't show themselves to avoid disturbing them. Of course, there were also two maids in the corner waiting for instructions at any time.

Wang Sheng took out the prepared Huanchuan paper, which had already been pre-drawn with staff lines, waiting to be marked.

Back on Earth, Wang Sheng had to pretend to be a tuner, so how could he not understand the staff? Therefore, he had learned the staff. Referring to the piano keys, Wang Sheng quickly extracted the knowledge of the staff from the depths of his memory and then told Grandmaster Yu in great detail.

Grandmaster Yu quickly discovered that, according to this notation method combining the piano and the staff, it was possible to accurately record the precise pitch and rhythmic changes of various musical pieces. This was much more accurate than the method he had used before, which recorded hand gestures, string positions, and so on.

The previous notation methods would vary slightly depending on the size of each person's hand and the length of the strings of each guqin. Unless there was a teacher who was proficient in music to guide them, a novice musician would never be able to play accurately after receiving the score.

But now this staff was different. Combined with the piano, it was exactly as high as it should be, and exactly as long as it should be, without any mistakes. The changes in pitch far exceeded the range of the pentatonic scale, and some of the semitones of the black keys made Grandmaster Yu exclaim in admiration. This unique and wide range of pitches was something that the guqin simply could not produce.

The more he listened, the more surprised Grandmaster Yu became. He was shocked that his belief that the guqin was the king of instruments was becoming more and more shaken. He was pleased that the piano he had made himself might really become a groundbreaking new instrument.

In this wavering mood, Grandmaster Yu firmly remembered the staff notation method. It was all related to music, and with Grandmaster Yu's attainments, as long as he understood the relationship between the piano keys and the staff notes, it would be easy to master. As for half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and so on, he mastered them quickly.

He thought this was the end, but after Wang Sheng waited for Grandmaster Yu to digest it and rested for a while, he began to explain the concept of chords to the grandmaster.

This time, Grandmaster Yu was almost shocked to jump up. An instrument that could produce ensemble sounds?

When Wang Sheng heard Grandmaster Yu's understanding, he could only curl his lips and temporarily acknowledge his statement. Anyway, the concept of chords was about the same as this, so let Grandmaster Yu understand it this way first! When he studied it more deeply, he would gradually have a clearer understanding.

The piano was played with both hands. Under normal circumstances, one hand played chords and the other hand played the melody. Wang Sheng stuffed all of this into Grandmaster Yu like a duck being force-fed.

By the time all of this was explained, a day had passed. Grandmaster Yu sat in front of the piano with the densely recorded information and studied it for a whole day before appearing in front of Wang Sheng again with red eyes.

"Your piano must have music for it, right?" Grandmaster Yu asked almost eagerly.

Grandmaster Yu didn't do anything else during this day. He carefully reviewed the staff notation method completely and then tried to write out a relatively simple guqin piece from his mind using the staff.

On one side was the piano, and on the other side was the guqin. He played it on one side and then on the other side. The pitch, intonation, and rhythm were easily marked on the staff. Grandmaster Yu was horrified to find that this brand new staff notation method was many times simpler than the guqin scores he was proficient in, but it was more accurate by many times.

However, no matter how Grandmaster Yu tried to play that guqin piece on the piano, he felt an indescribable discomfort. Grandmaster Yu understood that this was because the guqin piece was not suitable for piano performance, and it was not a matter of superiority or inferiority. It was common among other instruments. 'Pipa Language' and 'Ambush from Ten Sides' were not suitable for the guqin, which was normal.

But facing a brand new piano, having vaguely learned a lot of theory, but not having a suitable piece to show, it was simply killing Grandmaster Yu. That's why Grandmaster Yu came to Wang Sheng with red eyes.

"Yes!" Wang Sheng nodded very肯定ly. During the day that Grandmaster Yu was studying, Wang Sheng was not idle. He prepared an excellent piano piece and was waiting for Grandmaster Yu.

For the time being, Beethoven, Liszt, Bach, and so on didn't need to be considered. Grandmaster Yu might not be able to accept that kind of musical style and culture suddenly. Therefore, Wang Sheng prepared a native Chinese piano piece, the famous 'Butterfly Lovers'.

Wang Sheng's memory, coupled with his current hearing, was able to accurately restore the 'Butterfly Lovers' piano piece into sheet music. A thick book, bound together, was held in both hands and given to Grandmaster Yu.

"Grandmaster Yu, my hands are clumsy, so I may not be able to play it, but I believe that you, Grandmaster, will definitely be able to play the charm of this piece," Wang Sheng said to Grandmaster Yu with anticipation, "I am waiting for the moment when Grandmaster can play it for us."
