#106 - The King is Calling
Chapter 106: The King Summons
A dazzling edict popped up on the Divine Grace Light Screen:
“His Majesty summons you to the Throne Room.
—Secretariat”
The two lines of text flashed incessantly in the center of his vision, forcing Loras to stop what he was doing and place the gold-dust-covered brush back into the small box on the table.
This was Loras's private residence.
He was sitting alone in front of a mirror, tracing the Tyrell family's golden rose onto a shield-shaped badge.
At this moment, the rose outline on the badge was complete, but only half of it had been painted with gold, the other half remaining a cold, silvery-white.
He longed to finish painting the badge in one go, allowing the golden rose to appear in its full glory, and to pray for the Southern Alliance.
But the edict continued to flash, demanding attention.
With a soft sigh, Loras set down the unfinished badge.
The Divine Grace Light Screen did not allow for delay.
Especially when the order came from the Secretariat.
Although this institution only existed on the Divine Grace Light Screen, everyone knew that it was the mouthpiece of His Majesty the King.
Loras stood up and saw himself in the mirror.
The weather was hot and humid, and he was only wearing a thin shirt, which was not suitable for going out, let alone meeting the King.
He summoned a servant, and Loras allowed himself to be wrapped layer upon layer in exquisite, formal, and heavy garments, just like his situation in the Red Keep, concealing his inner pain and passion deep within.
He looked at himself in the mirror. The military uniform was neat and imposing, but it still felt like something was missing.
That's right. Loras remembered that daily training and the instructional manual on the Divine Grace Light Screen required him to dress properly for important occasions, and not just in this way.
Loras found several badges of various shapes.
A bronze six-pointed star, symbolizing the grace of the Seven Gods, was the emblem of the Holy War Army, worn on the left chest, directly in front of the heart.
A silver-cast all-seeing eye, a silvery-white triangle radiating light, symbolized the omnipresent light and was the emblem of the Order of Light, worn around the neck.
A circular badge, with a swastika engraved, symbolized the summoning of the Divine Envoy and was the emblem of all those favored by Divine Grace, worn on the left arm.
Was there more?
Loras paused, trying to recall. What other identities do I have?
Holy War Army soldier, member of the Order of Light, one favored by Divine Grace, Loras of House Tyrell, Knight of Flowers, Renly's lover.
No, His Majesty Renly was already engaged to his sister Margaery. At best, he could only be his knight.
After hesitating again and again, Loras finally left behind the golden rose emblem and fastened a cloak with the crowned stag. For the King in his heart.
Walking out of the room, Loras headed straight for the Throne Room along a familiar path.
While walking quickly, greeting the courtiers and ladies along the way, Loras pondered the purpose of the King's summons.
Today was Tuesday, so it shouldn't be about handing over Divine Grace creations.
After receiving Divine Grace, Loras and the others quickly discovered that the intangible Divine Grace power could gradually grow and be separated through their own hands, entering various ordinary objects, thereby creating tools with miraculous effects.
The Light Screen called them Divine Grace creations and issued a fixed task: to hand over eleven Divine Grace creations every Sunday.
Eleven was just right, slightly less than the Divine Grace power gained each week. Everyone's surplus from two weeks could be used to create another Divine Grace creation. The Light Screen would purchase them at a fair price, or they could be kept for personal use.
Loras himself had kept a flame dagger made of dragon crystal, as he had heard that dragon crystal was most compatible with Divine Grace.
Just two days ago, Loras had handed in his quota for last week, completing the Light Screen's task. The deadline for this week's task was still Sunday, so that couldn't be the reason for the summons.
Perhaps it was to find some work for the idle Holy War Army? After all, they were too idle.
Loras felt this deeply.
In recent days, apart from the regular tasks assigned by the Light Screen every day, it seemed as if he had completely disappeared from the Red Keep and King's Landing. No other errands had come his way.
This was originally a good thing, since his most important identity in the Red Keep was as a hostage of the Tyrell family, and he should be satisfied if he wasn't bothered.
But as time passed, Loras watched the Red Keep change again and again, King's Landing alter again and again, the Gold Cloaks transform into Divine Grace-favored Guards, and the new recruits recruited by Ser Jaime rapidly transform, almost like a battle-hardened elite force.
Every day, Loras's understanding was subverted, and his expectation of the Southern Alliance's victory was reduced by one point.
The feeling of helplessness was too painful. Loras would rather immerse himself in the Light Screen's tasks, pouring out sweat and energy, and casting aside all heavy and complicated thoughts.
The Light Screen required everyone to run 10,000 steps in the morning. Very well, Loras not only ran in the front, but also doubled his efforts.
The Light Screen required training in swordsmanship, spearmanship, horsemanship, and the use of flame and healing. Loras went all out, squeezing out every bit of his strength and God-given flame, and achieving the top spot on the Light Screen leaderboard every day.
The Light Screen required studying documents, history, and tactics. Loras not only carefully memorized the knowledge provided by the Light Screen, but also privately borrowed related books.
In the weekly exams, besides Samwell Tarly, Loras was still the champion.
Even so, the waking hours of each day were still too long. The Light Screen's tasks could only take up half the time at most, so what about the other half?
Loras desperately needed more goals and more work to avoid meaningless melancholy and reverie.
It should be about the Holy War Army, right? The more Loras thought about it, the more certain he became.
The content on the Divine Grace Light Screen was very rich. There were detailed introductions and brief lists of the various departments under the throne, historical records of the families of the Seven Kingdoms and their current territories, titles, and members, as well as those favored by Divine Grace and the Holy War Army.
Loras could see clearly that every week, the number of Holy War Army soldiers doubled, and the number of those favored by Divine Grace increased by hundreds or thousands.
As of today, the Holy War Army already had one thousand soldiers, and those favored by Divine Grace numbered more than five thousand.
One thousand Holy War Army soldiers, ah. Although the power of flame and healing was limited, slow to recover, and could not be squandered recklessly, it was ultimately a divine power. Even in the midst of battle, stopping an army of ten thousand would not be a problem.
And this number was not the limit. Wait another month or two…
Now it seemed that the King had not forgotten this enormous power. Loras began to guess at the King's arrangements for him. He wouldn't ask me to fight against my family, would he?
Loras walked into the Throne Room with trepidation.
Two rows of Gold Cloaks, no, Guards, were solemnly guarding both sides of the hall.
The King stood in front of the Iron Throne, withdrawing his blazing, light-infused sword “Dragonflame” from the shoulder of a kneeling, tall figure.
“Rise. Kingsguard, Brienne of Tarth.”
That name… Loras paused, staring fixedly at the tall figure's back, which seemed vaguely familiar.
The newly appointed Kingsguard rose and turned around.
It was her!
Loras was certain. That face was unforgettable, unique, “Beauty” Brienne.
Wasn't she His Majesty Renly's loyal admirer? Why was she here, and she had become Joffrey's Kingsguard!?
The King beckoned him. “Loras, come forward.”
The King was summoning.
Loras approached step by step, a shocking guess forming in his mind.
“You know, Uncle Renly is bound to lose.” The King concluded with a light laugh.
“After all, blood is thicker than water. I might spare his life if two Kingsguard would advise mercy.”
Loras understood everything.
For the King in his heart.
He lowered his head, knelt on one knee, and offered his sword.
