#173 - Hidden danger
Chapter 173: Hidden Crisis
The Iron Islands.
King's Port was a chaotic scene of longships and blaring horns, a cacophony of noise.
It felt like a sea battle was about to erupt.
The reason was simple, laughable, and yet, very real.
The captains, having departed the investiture feast at Pyke, couldn't wait a moment longer. They spurred their horses into a frenzy, arriving at King's Port by evening, each determined to be the first to claim their desired spoils.
However,
the arriving captains, unable to agree on the division of spoils, were already engaged in fierce disputes over the prey they coveted, even before setting foot on deck.
Amidst the curses, arguments, and enticing words, shocking information was revealed.
Many captains had perished at Pyke!
Asha was about to be crowned when Euron Crow's Eye, with a kraken in tow, stormed into the Great Hall, wreaking havoc! A true kraken, hundreds of feet long!
King Joffrey of the Iron Throne suddenly appeared, using a mysterious power to repel the kraken!
Asha had become a Duchess under the Iron Throne, while Victarion, the commander of the Iron Fleet, was now something called the "Guardian of the Sunset Sea"?!
Most importantly,
the longships that had lost their captains were to be distributed among the surviving captains?!
Why should that be!
The crewmen who didn't see their captains among the survivors were panicked and enraged.
To them, the captain was not just a captain; he was likely their father, brother, uncle, or the elder or lord of their family.
Even if the captain was dead, the longship was still the family's wealth, to be inherited by the family's sons and nephews, inviolable!
After a brief period of chaos,
the longships that had lost their masters began, one after another, to release their mooring lines, raise their anchors, unfurl their sails, and row their oars.
The smaller longships, which had been peacefully resting on the pebble beach to the north, now saw their crewmen calling to each other, gathering their numbers, and working together to lift the longships back into the water, or simply pushing them off the beach and into the sea, setting sail.
They were trying to escape!
How could the captains allow the fish meat delivered to their mouths to jump back into the sea?
Thus, the longships that still had their masters were also set in motion at the captains' commands, intercepting every longship that tried to leave the port.
At first, it was negotiation and persuasion, coercion and enticement.
Then came the insults and curses.
As the two sides approached, they began to use their hulls to block each other, even resorting to the rams at the bows of their ships.
The conflict escalated.
Seeing that the longships were about to truly shed blood, Asha, standing in the castle on the hill, could no longer sit still.
"Your Grace," Asha said, looking at the vacant-eyed, stone-faced Joffrey beside her, "can you hear me, Your Grace?"
In the next instant, the vitality and vibrancy suddenly returned to the body before Asha.
"There's a bit of trouble at Storm's End. What's wrong?"
Asha struggled to hide her shock and surprise at this strange phenomenon. "Please, think of a way. If you let the port continue to descend into chaos like this, your fleet will inevitably suffer losses in warships and personnel."
Joffrey smiled softly.
"What difficulty is there in this? You go. Tell those crewmen that anyone who disobeys orders will be regarded as a traitor, and not only they themselves, but their wives, children, brothers, and families will be utterly destroyed, with steel and fire."
"The Greyjoy family has ruled for so many years; surely it still has this much authority."
Asha widened her eyes, speechless.
Joffrey pursed his lips, and Osha, who was guarding behind him, immediately handed Asha his command token.
"You've experienced the effect of this token before. Have Osha go with you as well, and I guarantee that everyone in King's Port will be able to hear you clearly."
Asha hesitated, holding the token.
Joffrey, however, turned his body away indifferently, admiring the scenery within King's Port from the window.
Wasn't the reason for giving up these longships, which could have been taken for his own use, precisely for this scene before him? The Ironborn were slaughtering each other for their own benefit, abandoning tradition and the teachings of the Drowned God.
The strength of twenty people was ultimately insufficient.
But the massive entanglement of interests involving two or three hundred longships would make it impossible for the Iron Islands to unite and make a major decision to change course.
Until the invincible royal fleet arrived.
The cannons roared, divine grace shone, and then it would be effortless to shape the Iron Islands however he wanted, at his whim.
Joffrey's energy was mainly focused on Crow's Eye.
In half a day, the "Silence" and its accompanying longships had already left the Iron Islands area from the south, heading towards the Westerlands at full speed, seemingly aiming for Fair Isle.
It was worth noting that,
Crow's Eye was currently guzzling a thick blue liquid, presumably the "shade of the evening" produced in Qarth.
The Qartheen warlocks drank large amounts of shade of the evening, causing their lips and even their entire bodies to turn blue.
It was said that its taste would change with each swallow, bringing the drinker visions (prophecies) and magic.
At the same time,
the kraken beneath the sea did not closely follow the ship's progress, but rather roamed and hunted nearby, and even showed signs of breaking away from the group.
Joffrey couldn't help but wonder:
Perhaps Euron Crow's Eye couldn't fully control the kraken. At least, controlling it was difficult and required strict conditions.
This could also explain why Crow's Eye chose to flee and didn't allow the kraken to appear in King's Port.
So, Crow's Eye's target was Fair Isle? Would he let the kraken appear there? And where did the kraken originally live, and how many years had it lived?
Joffrey was much more interested in the kraken.
If this kraken had truly lived for hundreds or thousands of years, witnessing or experiencing ancient history, then capturing it and communicating with it might reveal many unknown secrets and truths.
Gods, magic, the apocalypse.
The kraken's memory was a precious treasure trove. Joffrey was determined to have it.
He had already sensed a certain crisis.
The giant kraken, disrupting the timeline, had inexplicably appeared, not long before the arrival of the red comet.
Joffrey had tested it, and the concentration of Source Energy in the world today had slightly increased, but it was still not enough for the Children of the Flame to survive independently, let alone a kraken hundreds of feet long.
How had it survived all these years?
What was its purpose in appearing this time?
He couldn't help but suspect that what was reviving along with magic was not just wizards and Others.
He had to obtain more power as quickly as possible; he couldn't slack off in either his own development or the development of his forces, earning every chip to deal with any possible crisis.
"Ironborn! I am Asha Greyjoy. In the name of the Duchess of Pyke, everyone stop!"
Joffrey looked down at the docks below.
Asha stood on a stack of cargo boxes, shouting orders towards the port, the command token amplifying her voice countless times, drowning out the waves, horns, and all other human voices.
"War is coming!"
"I promise in the name of House Greyjoy that every longship that has unfortunately lost its captain will be allowed to join the Sunset Sea Fleet, receive proper protection, and fulfill its duties in the war."
"The surviving captains are experienced and will choose the most suitable new captains for you to command the battle and win victory."
"If anyone dares to abandon their duty, cowardly fleeing back to their hometown just because of the death of one person, don't blame the well-built, massive fleet for showing no mercy and making an example of them first!"
"The kraken's mercy is extremely limited!"
Whether it was by being summoned, intimidated, or shocked by the loud noise, the port gradually returned to order.
Joffrey had a bit of appreciation for Asha.
She was quite capable.
However, while things were calm here, the families throughout the Iron Islands would not easily concede.
Even in the face of the kraken.
The kraken. He absolutely couldn't let the kraken get away.
Joffrey contacted Earl Velaryon, who was leading the fleet towards Arbor, urging him to speed up.
Subdue Arbor, then hunt the kraken.
