#223 - Hunting Game
Chapter 223: The Hunt
The sunlight was golden.
Longships and warriors occupied all the coastal docks and early warning outposts. The port town was in disarray, with the island's guards and civilians fleeing back into the island's depths.
The battle had subsided slightly. The signal fires still burned brightly.
The "Silence" and two other oared warships captured from Fairy Isle were stationed at sea, observing the battle.
Their bows faced east.
"Euron Crow's Eye" stood watching from afar. The wide horizon remained a flat line, with no sign of ships yet.
The Shield Islands' fleet was a bit slow.
But that didn't matter. If it dragged on until night, fighting in the darkness would be even more advantageous.
The dark sea.
What could be more suitable for sea monster hunting?
Moreover.
Joffrey had been buried at Storm's End. The lords of the Seven Kingdoms were killing each other, shedding endless blood. Weakened Westeros was a feast for the victors. The sea monster would usher in rebirth.
The prophecy had made it very clear.
The prophecy from the gods had been proven so many times, it would never be wrong.
Joffrey was dead.
"Euron Crow's Eye" had seen it with his own eyes in a dream: the fellow had been betrayed. The Red God's priestess had struck him a fatal blow from behind, a fiery, shadowy blow that shattered his body and scattered his soul.
That's right. He was dead.
The Shade of the Evening had enhanced the effects of the prophetic dream, allowing "Crow's Eye" to see the future more clearly.
The Red God wanted him dead, and he naturally couldn't escape.
There was no need to doubt.
"Crow's Eye" didn't believe in any gods, but he believed in the power of the gods more than most people.
The Red God's will was beyond the comprehension of mortals.
His priests could naturally do anything, even if it was completely illogical, even if it didn't yield the slightest visible benefit.
Joffrey was certainly dead, and he had to die.
Only in this way would the chaos in the Seven Kingdoms intensify, and the Reach would not be a unified whole. Only then could the longships break through one by one, picking their prey at will, conquering fertile lands one by one.
Only in this way could the sea monster in the deep sea become his unmatched power, suppressing the entire continent of Westeros, and deterring any foreign enemies.
Otherwise, why attack the Shield Islands with a mere few hundred people?
A few longships, a few hundred Ironborn.
With this little manpower, they couldn't even take down or hold a single ordinary stone castle!
In the end, they still had to rely on the sea monster.
The enormous, unparalleled sea monster, the intelligent sea monster, the cold sea monster, the tyrannical sea monster.
A sea monster created by the gods.
Having seen it, who could ignore the existence of the Iron Islands, who could still cling to illusory beliefs? Who could resist kneeling?
It wasn't just the Shield Islands.
Highgarden, Oldtown, Arbor, the entire richest Reach would submit to the sea!
And then the Seven Kingdoms!
And then…
Euron looked ahead. There was still no movement on the sea.
It was a bit slow. He consoled himself. He had to believe in the prophecy.
During the voyage, Euron had once again made a prophecy about the Shield Islands: everything would go smoothly, and all he would see was victory and submission. Although the process was relatively vague.
The intelligence was unclear.
Therefore, the longship fleet still assumed the fully manned Shield Islands fleet as their hypothetical enemy, made thorough plans and preparations, and approached the target with the utmost caution.
But the result was unexpectedly good.
Not only had the defenses of Greyshield not been strengthened at all, but even the daily level of guarding was not up to par.
Only then did the Ironborn realize that the lords, knights, and fleets of the Shield Islands had all happened to gather on Oakenshield.
Why?
The captured people were all vague, and the information they revealed was incomplete, ambiguous, and even contradictory, more unbelievable than fabricated rumors.
After using various torture games, the Ironborn finally determined that they really didn't know.
It was also reasonable.
If it was really a secret, these guys who wandered and mingled in the port docks all day were obviously not qualified to know.
The people in the castle might know more. However, for the Ironborn raiders holding knives and swords, solid stone buildings were absolutely tough nuts to crack. Unless the sea monster was dispatched.
But King Euron didn't reveal his trump card in advance. The Ironborn had no choice but to give up pursuing the truth.
That being said, if it weren't for King Euron's request, they wouldn't care about these troublesome things. Wouldn't it be better to grab more treasures and catch a few slave laborers and salt wives with this time?
The clues were cut off here.
Even so, "Crow's Eye" still pieced together a rough idea.
Something big was happening on the Shield Islands.
This was nonsense, but it was a confirmed premise and foundation.
What big thing?
The fragmentary words returned from Greyshield were quite chaotic. Some said that Highgarden had sent people to conscript the island fleet to fight, some said that Oakenshield had invited the various families to gather and strengthen the marriage alliance, and some said that it was to reorganize the fleet and offer loyalty to Highgarden and the King.
Highgarden's involvement should be a fact.
Then, is the part about the King true or false? If it's true, which King is it?
Renly? Joffrey?
Given Renly's recent movements, if he hadn't persuaded the Redwyne family of Arbor to change their attitude, he probably wouldn't have spent any effort on the Shield Islands.
Even if he took the Shield Islands' fleet, Arbor in the south would still be an unavoidable hurdle.
What's more, Renly had already taken other measures to make up for his disadvantage at sea.
It wasn't just the Seven Kingdoms that had fleets.
The mercenary fleets of the Free Trade Cities were not only closer, but their loyalty and obedience were also less affected by the lords of the Seven Kingdoms. As long as they paid according to the contract.
Renly, who had Highgarden's support, obviously wouldn't be unable to pay the mercenary fleet's remuneration.
Euron had already seen: Renly's envoy had signed a contract for as many as two hundred warships from the Free Trade City of Tyrosh, which would depart soon.
With this fleet, Renly naturally wouldn't put much effort into this side.
So.
There was no King, just Highgarden's own actions.
Euron had to make this judgment.
There were no other options. Joffrey was dead.
Of course, there was still a slight possibility that Joffrey had died too late, and his remnants hadn't received the news, so they continued their actions here.
After all, there was that kind of power.
Euron couldn't help but recall the heat and swelling pain he felt from the sea monster's body. The power of fire. Perhaps there was even more.
How could the current world tolerate the existence of such a guy?!
Joffrey, you died well.
"Your Majesty! Look at the stern!" A familiar voice rang in Crow's Eye's ear, his usually indifferent tone was rarely fluctuating and surprised.
Crow's Eye turned around, and the "Skinchanger" Aeron Farwind pointed to the setting sun in the west.
He squinted and looked at the distant sea.
One, two, hundreds of slender masts formed a line, and the rhomboid black shadows under the masts slowly became larger and wider, which was the front of the hull.
They were advancing towards this side!
Woo ~ ~ ~
The sea monster under the sea made a sound on its own, seemingly excited, but also seemingly resisting out of fear.
Joffrey!?
Crow's Eye looked into the distance with all his might.
The figure on the attacking fleet suddenly enlarged and glanced over here, immediately causing the blood eye under his eye patch to throb faintly.
Crow's Eye lowered his head fiercely, staring at the blood-red deck.
Joffrey! He's not dead!!
How is that possible?!! That was the prophecy of the gods!
How could it be wrong!?
Crow's Eye's heart was beating wildly, his eyes were frantic, and years of firm belief gradually shattered and collapsed, causing him to begin to doubt everything.
West.
Joffrey smiled slightly: "The hunt begins."
