#52 - Haunted Forest
Chapter 52 Ghost Shadow Forest
The night was deep, and after confirming the existence of the secret passage, the exhausted group did not continue forward, but climbed up to the well opening and rested for the night.
Early the next morning.
They finally passed through that human face.
Behind the face was a narrow and slowly ascending underground tunnel.
They approached the surface step by step, and the light ahead gradually changed from the size of a horizontally placed grain of rice to a crescent moon, the sun, and the entire world.
They walked directly into the Ghost Shadow Forest.
Benjen turned his head and looked, "The trees grow so fast. Are we already this close to the Wall?"
The Night's Watch never allowed a tree to appear within a thousand meters of the Wall, but outside the abandoned Nightfort, the Ghost Shadow Forest was about to spread to the foot of the wall.
Joffrey saw countless weirwood trees.
No wonder it's the roosting place of crows; there are too many eyes.
He sighed, then leaned against a weirwood tree, his head slightly raised against the bark, and flipped through the countless images that flooded in.
Sure enough, someone had been here before, and not just humans.
A Night's Watchman searching ahead shouted urgently, "Chief, there's a lot of blood on the ground here, and the bodies of our brothers!"
Benjen turned and plunged into the forest in two or three steps, and the other Night's Watchmen followed.
The routine is old, but it works.
Joffrey stepped through the rainwater, "Uncle, Jon, let's go take a look too. Be careful."
The scene was terrible.
At first glance, it was difficult to tell how many bodies there were; they were many large and small pieces of meat, abandoned in the white snow and frozen into colored ice.
"At least five good men!" Benjen said in a low voice, stating his judgment.
Tyrion frowned and asked, "Is it normal for black brothers to be killed here?"
The Nightfort has been abandoned for two hundred years, and the place where the corpses appeared is not far from the entrance of the secret passage. Tyrion smelled a conspiracy. Is Bloodraven really still alive?
A Night's Watchman held up a person's head with a stiff expression, "I recognize him! He ate Instructor Illyria's stick with me, and was later sent to support Shadow Tower. He's from Shadow Tower!"
Another black brother said, "Maybe they were a patrol team sent out by Shadow Tower, chased by wildlings and fled here."
"It's more likely that they encountered wildlings who had just come out of the secret passage."
Another ranger was eager to try, "The brothers were killed not long ago, at most three or four days. The wildlings definitely haven't gone far, and we're on horseback, so maybe we can catch up in a day or two!"
Benjen was silent for a moment, hesitatingly asking the crown prince, "Should Your Highness retreat back to the Wall first?"
Heh, how could anyone be embarrassed to say they wanted to go back after hearing that question.
Joffrey understood Benjen's decision.
After all, he's the First Ranger; how could he shrink back in the face of trouble. But the Night's Watchmen's statements are so consistent; doesn't anyone suspect anything?
Joffrey glanced at the few rangers who had spoken earlier, "Let's go together; the wildlings are not to be feared."
The rangers showed their housekeeping skills, searching for subtle traces on the white snow, and actually saw the traces of living people.
The team sped towards the northwest.
Progress was smoother than expected; in half a day, they discovered the wildlings' open-air camp.
Benjen lay on the snow behind the slope, silently observing.
At Benjen's request, Joffrey took Tyrion and Jon and hid in the forest behind, so as not to startle the enemy in advance.
The three spoke quietly through magic.
Tyrion was very uneasy, "Are the Starks' brains all so upright? I bet there's a conspiracy here!"
Jon didn't know what to say. Benjen was his closest uncle after all.
Joffrey didn't care, "A bland journey also needs more adjustments to be exciting. Maybe after today, we can make friends with legendary creatures."
"What legendary creature?" Tyrion heard the deeper meaning.
"Three, two, one, look to the left."
Tyrion twisted his neck, and many tall and short figures instantly appeared at the end of his vision.
"Alert!!" he shouted.
Benjen, who was in front, had just turned around when he saw several black brothers moving. Daggers went in and out, and the blood-red paint splattered between the throats and hearts of his other brothers, staining the white land.
"No!" He waved his sword at the traitors, but they retreated faster, merging into the wildling pile in the distance.
"Hahaha, Benjen, you can't run this time, can you!"
Twenty-odd wildlings walked out of the wildling camp. More figures gradually emerged from the forest behind them.
Benjen slowly moved to Joffrey's side.
"Traitors! Scarface, Redhand, Hound, Kos, why did you betray us!?"
Benjen questioned, his face flushed.
Those people did not respond. The wildling leader said for them, "Benjen, you don't know, there is still that Lord outside the Wall. It doesn't count as betraying the oath for the Night's Watch to be loyal to him."
Joffrey directly stated, "You're talking about the former Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, the Three-Eyed Crow, Brynden Rivers, right?"
"Wildlings, tell him that I will personally pay a visit, provided you can still go back alive."
The many wildlings looked at each other and laughed.
The wildlings were not in a hurry to act. They had more manpower surrounding this place.
Joffrey wasn't in a hurry either. He was waiting for those little guys to get close enough, too late to escape, and then he could make friends with them.
Tyrion confirmed his guess, "This must be the Children of the Forest mentioned in the books!"
As tall as himself, with big ears and golden eyes, deep chestnut skin with spots, three fingers, and a sharp claw for a thumb.
Tyrion breathed heavily with excitement. This was a living legend, alive!
"Good nephew, be sure to catch a few alive. It's hard to imagine what the Seven Kingdoms would think of this, ha, more fun than dwarfs!"
She, the only one in the tribe who could understand the Common Tongue, rubbed her hands together, "Humans, take back your impolite words. We are only here for the person who should not be here beside you. Give up resistance, and you can return safely."
The wildling leader also echoed: "That's right, that's right, put down your weapons and you can live."
Joffrey looked around. In front and behind were hundreds of wildlings, and on the left and right were the Children of the Forest and dozens of skinchangers' beasts, with eagles and crows and other birds circling overhead.
He was struggling with what method to use to solve the enemy.
Now he has 500 units of Fire Mana. It is known that 1 unit of Fire Mana can boil ten tons of ice-water mixture, which is about one million kilocalories / more than four million kilojoules of heat, which is equivalent to the heat released by one kilogram of TNT.
Inject it directly into the wildling's body? He still has to approach the enemy and avoid attacks, not handsome enough.
Breathe fire? The combustibles are too scattered and cannot be wiped out in one fell swoop.
The wildlings began to shout, "Hey, hurry up and surrender. You kid, kneel on the ground, and I'll give you a merciful death."
Joffrey smiled kindly at that person.
Art is explosion.
He squatted down and pressed his hands on the solid block of ice.
150 units of Fire Mana were divided into 50 portions and integrated into the ice under the feet of the wildlings and beasts.
With a thought, hundreds of tons of ice instantly expanded into high-temperature water vapor, erupting from within layers of solid ice.
Bang!
Tss~ Tss~
The fresh water vapor, wrapped in the aroma of roasted meat, turned into a surging white storm.
The shattered ice blocks fell back to the ground from the sky, still entwined with wisps of mist or blood.
Tyrion took a deep breath.
The air was as warm as a summer afternoon in King's Landing. So hot.
