#97 - Wash away the dust
Chapter 97 Washing Away the Dust
Gendry and twenty recruits had arrived at the area they were responsible for blockading.
This area was located in the Rhaenys's Hill, north of the Street of the Silent Sisters, near the Old Gate, with luxurious brothels, mansions of dignitaries, and scenery such as sculptures, gardens, fountains, and murals.
Gendry had never been here before, nor did he know anyone here, and he believed that the other twenty were the same.
Hot Pie and many others were looking around, their faces full of amazement, even becoming more and more restrained and uneasy.
Looking at them, they didn't seem like soldiers on a mission, but more like poor country bumpkins who had strayed into a high-end place and had never seen the world.
Seeing this situation, Gendry decisively shouted the command, "Forward march!"
Hot Pie and the others immediately straightened up as if by conditioned reflex, regaining their serious expressions, and marched forward in neat steps.
"One two one, one two one, one two…"
Gendry ignored the surprised gazes of pedestrians and focused on thinking about his mission.
After the morning exercise today, everyone was assigned tasks, divided into a thousand small teams, each team with about twenty people.
Eight hundred of these teams were responsible for blockading and guarding various parts of the city, one hundred teams blockaded the city gates, and the last one hundred teams were responsible for assisting various departments in carrying out tasks in various areas.
Fortunately, the gold cloaks and recruits who had received the grace of the gods were almost all captains of their respective teams, and Gendry was also assigned to his own team and task area.
"Grid 239", this was the name displayed on the God's Grace light screen for this area at this time, and Gendry's team was naturally "Team 239", with a total of twenty-one members.
Although he only had twenty people under him, Gendry was already very satisfied.
In less than half a month, he had gone from being a blacksmith's apprentice to the captain of twenty soldiers, and had even been granted the grace of the gods by His Majesty. No one could ask for more.
Everyone in the barracks was full of hope.
His Majesty not only provided generous and thoughtful treatment, but also established a clear reward system. Regardless of background or status, everyone could receive everything they deserved after proving their ability and making meritorious contributions: gold dragons, honor, protection, and promotion.
Regardless of background? At first, no one dared to believe it, but one living example after another gradually appeared before their eyes.
Team leaders, centurions, quartermasters, scribes - outstanding recruits were granted the grace of the gods and became officers. Among them were sons of merchants, orphans without parents, impoverished commoners, and even beggars.
Everyone knew how ordinary and even difficult these lucky ones' lives had been before.
Just like everyone else, they didn't believe they could become much better people. They didn't think about anything, and did everything they could just for a full meal and a cotton coat.
The reason they responded to the royal family's call was just to sell their lives. They never had any long-term plans.
After all, no one at that time thought that the army would continue to exist.
Obviously, after the end of Renly's rebellion, the army should naturally be disbanded, the officers would return to their families to continue enjoying life, and the surviving soldiers would face life with scars and suffering.
Soldiers who grabbed spoils of war could quietly savor their past experiences in the second half of their lives.
Unlucky soldiers could only work, rely on relatives and friends, try every means to earn bread, endure people's ridicule, and even have to tell stories about their war career in exchange for a meal or a glass of ale.
Everyone knew it.
This is war and its soldiers. It has always been like this.
But now it seems to be changing.
The mission of this army does not seem to end when Renly's rebellion ends, and the soldiers do not seem to be just dispensable grains of sand.
Show ability and loyalty, make meritorious service, turn from grains of sand into real people, and create their own stories. The more examples of such deeds, the more ardent and bright everyone's eyes become, and the more sincere and enthusiastic the laughter and songs in the barracks become.
Until now, everyone has believed that they also have a bright future.
Who can no longer strive for progress?
Gendry also secretly made up his mind. He would do every task perfectly, fight a few more battles, put down Renly's rebellion, and live to the end. Perhaps becoming a general was not impossible.
General, Gendry. By then, he should have a surname. What surname should he take?
It all starts today.
"Holy Land Radiance: Act 1 - Washing Away the Dust," Gendry looked at the name of the task on the brilliant light screen in front of him, full of confidence.
Dust, no matter how much dust there is in King's Landing, it is still just dust.
Gendry clicked on the task map on the light screen.
King's Landing had been divided into eight hundred "grids". Most of the grids were white, which meant that the task force was already in place and could be blockaded at any time as soon as the order was given.
A few were black, which meant that the task force had not yet arrived and needed more time.
Gendry also knew that after the order was issued later, the successfully blockaded grids would turn green, and the problematic grids would turn red, and nearby teams would have to provide support, but also ensure that their own grids were not affected.
After all the grids turned green, all the teams responsible for carrying out various investigation tasks would begin to act, and would appear on all God's Grace light screens in the form of blue light spheres.
The grids after the investigation would turn white again, and some of the task forces would continue to guard the grids, and some would join other grids or investigation teams.
Throughout the process, all teams must pay attention to the changes in the blue light spheres at all times.
A steady flashing light sphere indicates that everything is normal;
A flashing light sphere with red stripes indicates that nearby teams need support;
A completely red flashing light sphere indicates that it is under attack and all available teams need to provide immediate support.
As for more dangerous situations, that is not the concern of the teams all over the city, and more powerful big figures will deal with it.
Gendry thought of the face with hideous burns, the commander of the King's Landing City Watch, Sandor Clegane.
Fire, what a terrible power.
Although he had only seen it once, Gendry was very sure that no one could resist that kind of power, that was an even more awe-inspiring divine grace.
At this time, the last grid on the light screen turned white.
Gendry's spirits lifted, signaling the team to prepare, while he stood still, waiting for the order with his eyes and beating heart.
Bang~
A glowing scroll popped out of the light screen, suddenly unfolded, revealing golden text.
"Grid network activated."
Gendry turned to the twenty soldiers, raised his right arm, took a deep breath, "Start the operation, complete blockade, no entry or exit allowed!"
Hot Pie and the others stood at attention and saluted, "Yes!"
Gendry began to issue orders, "You, you, you three go to that alley, you five block the main street, you two go over there, you five call everyone over, report any situation immediately."
"Yes!"
Everyone in the team became busy.
The expressions of the pedestrians who saw the soldiers' actions immediately became panicked, and they subconsciously wanted to run away.
Gendry drew the sword from his waist, "By order of His Majesty, investigate the entire city, no one is allowed to move, if you move again, you will die for nothing!"
The cold light of the blade shone, extremely convincing.
Looking at the crowd that had quieted down, Gendry did not completely relax.
There are many big figures here, who usually call the wind and summon the rain, and have great power. Are there any dust among them?
He took out a white steel ball and activated the button.
Hopefully this treasure will work.
