Green Monster Epic

#23 - Cognition

Chapter 23: Cognition

Kobolds, among the wilderness natives, are second only to goblins in population. Their adult individuals generally have lower physical qualities than hobgoblins, but are far superior to goblins and earth goblins. A normal adult kobold's physical quality is roughly equivalent to a level 3 warrior.

However, kobolds are also the race among the wilderness natives most likely to naturally give birth to arcane professions. Within their race, there is a significant chance of birthing warlocks. It is said that this is greatly related to their bloodline: In the ancient era when giants and dragons ruled, kobolds, as vassals of the dragon race, possessed some dragon blood in their bodies. The fact that most kobold warlocks advance to the Dragon Disciple profession seems to indirectly verify this legend.

However, the dragons in the Feyman Plane sneer at this, absolutely refusing to acknowledge that lowly reptiles possess their bloodline.

These common knowledge facts were all learned by Allen from Regis. During these few days of waiting for the rain, Allen relocated the entire tribe from their original Greenwild location to Bonefire's camp, even renaming it Greenwild Camp. Meanwhile, he mingled with Regis and the others, seeking advice on various common knowledge and honing his combat skills.

"I want to ask, how do you humans classify warrior professions by level? I keep hearing you talk about advancement. What level would my current strength be considered among you humans?"

Allen had many questions in his mind, but he also knew that humans would not reveal many things to them. Therefore, he only asked Regis some common-sense questions.

"Speaking of levels, we must mention the various gods in our plane. When you choose a god to believe in, then when you pray in that god's temple, that god will manifest your own strength into a specific level. For example, my current initial profession is a level 7 warrior. This is the level that the god set for me after a long period of training and my physique already possessing the qualities of a level 7 warrior, through divine introspection. By analogy, for advanced professions, as long as you meet the corresponding conditions, when you return to the temple or church of your faith, you will increase the corresponding level."

"Of course, even if a person does not pray to a god to manifest their strength, their own strength will not be affected. For example, Chieftain, if you were to go to a church to pray now, I'm afraid your level would be similar to mine, especially since your own physical qualities are outstanding. Perhaps you already have the level of an eight-level warrior, and judging from the duration of your rage, your advanced profession may also be in the direction of a berserker, and your level should have reached level 1."

These days of sparring with Allen filled Regis with admiration for this self-taught hobgoblin. Despite having systematic learning and several warrior skills, he had not gained much advantage in the contest with the other party. For Regis, who licked blood from the edge of a blade and always respected warriors, he no longer regarded the other party as an unsophisticated bumpkin, but as a green-skinned individual worthy of acquaintance.

He no longer kept secrets about anything he could say, revealing it to Allen in their exchanges, allowing Allen to finally have a deeper understanding of this world.

It turned out that the wilderness where Allen and his ancestors lived was called the Mansa Wilderness by outsiders. Some merchants also affectionately called it the Mansa Corridor because it connected two continents, creating huge business opportunities for them. It is said that in ancient times, a powerful god named Mansa fell here, so everyone named it in memory of the other party.

At the northern and southern ends of the wilderness, there are two vast continents adjacent to it, just like a dumbbell. The two continents serve as the weights of the dumbbell, hanging at both ends, and the wilderness serves as the grip, tightly connecting the two continents together.

Each of the two continents is inhabited by two powerful civilized races. The northern Taren Continent is dominated by elves and dwarves, with the two kingdoms opposing and interacting with each other; the southern Shireland Continent is dominated by humans and orcs, with humans occupying 3/5 of the Shireland Continent due to their strong reproductive ability, while the orc kingdom can only be confined to relatively barren lands.

"...Spellcasting professions are very powerful, but their professional divisions are also very diverse, such as warlocks, priests, wizards, and so on. Each type of profession has its own advantages and disadvantages. As long as we seize the opportunity in battle, it is not a pipe dream for us warriors to defeat them. The most important thing when dealing with spellcasting professions is to avoid their spells as much as possible. Under the condition that a spellcaster is fully prepared, they will not have too many spell slots in a single battle. After a spellcaster's spell slots are used up, they need to rely on deep meditation for four magic hours to recover, or rely on sleep for natural recovery, which takes even longer."

Regis and the others were about to face an enemy with a spellcaster, so Regis also focused on introducing the precautions when fighting against spellcasters to Allen. Allen, opposite him, listened carefully, not missing a single word.

"Based on my observations during the previous encounters, the warlock in the kobold group should be around level 11, which allows him to cast 2 fifth-level spells, or 5 fourth-level spells. During the battle, as long as we pay attention to the number of spells the opponent casts, we can roughly determine the usage of their spell slots."

"...Oh, oh."

In the wilderness, there is an average of a heavy rain every 10 days or so. Otherwise, in such a hot climate near the equator, lakes like Greenwild Lake would basically not exist. The evaporation brought about by sun exposure alone would make it impossible for the land to store much water. The Silverflash merchant group took the opportunity to rest at the current Greenwild Camp. Until 3 days later, in the early morning, layers of flocculent clouds began to appear in the sky. Based on experience, Allen judged that there would definitely be a heavy rain in the afternoon or tomorrow, which also meant that the opportunity they had been waiting for had arrived.

"Chieftain Allen, these few carriages will be entrusted to you. If possible, please take care of them and avoid being affected by the battle."

Because they were setting an ambush to attract the kobolds, there was no need to bring the real goods out. Feli, as a non-combatant, did not need to participate, so during these 3 days of rest, the goods on the 9 carriages were replaced with empty carriages. The seemingly full convoy was loaded with nothing but worthless withered grass and firewood, which were enough to deceive under the oilcloth.

However, before leaving, Feli kept urging Allen to take care of these carriages, after all, Feli and the others would still need these carriages for long-distance transportation in the future.

"Don't worry, Manager Feli, I will definitely bring the convoy back intact."

Allen, Feli, and the other two had planned for a full 3 days and carefully selected an ambush site. Allen really couldn't imagine that they would end up failing.

"Depart!!!"

During these three days, Allen did not mistreat his tribesmen. He made sure that everyone ate their fill every day, which further enhanced his prestige. As for the tribesmen lost during these days, no one questioned it, as the hobgoblins were long accustomed to the reality of the wilderness.

Full of vigor, Allen and 20 strong warriors from the tribe, as well as Regis and his 8 mercenaries, slowly headed towards the kobold territory with the four carriages from the merchant group as bait.
