Green Monster Epic

#25 - Big win

Chapter 25: A Great Victory

The magical fluctuations gradually dissipated. The Mud Swamp spell, which originally lasted for only a dozen breaths, persisted for half a magic hour under the enhancement of the terrain and climate before losing its effect.

However, even without the assistance of the Mud Swamp spell, Allen and his group were confident in completely defeating their opponents. In just half a magic hour, the kobolds, mired in the mud and unable to move freely, had suffered more than half their numbers in casualties from the arrows and javelins of the hobgoblins and human warriors.

The kobold leader was now berserk, his eyes bloodshot. The great hammer in his hand transformed into a whirlwind, sweeping through the mud. Any opponent who approached him could hardly escape his sharp edge.

After resting briefly on the hillside, Regis returned to the fray, flanking the kobold leader from the left and right with Allen, who charged down from above.

"Ignorant fools, daring to offend the mighty Wolf Fang, prepare to die!"

The kobold leader, though surprised, did not panic. He was full of confidence in his own strength. The powerful strength brought by his berserk state allowed him to hold his own against two opponents in the mud, even with the spare capacity to speak.

Allen himself personally experienced the pain of the Mud Swamp spell. One step and half of his lower leg sank in, and this was after the effect of the Mud Swamp spell had disappeared. His originally agile movements had no stage to display themselves. Facing the kobold's heavy warhammer, he could only meet it head-on with brute force. The clanging sound of metal colliding was ear-piercing, and the unadorned fighting style made one's blood boil.

On the other side, Regis was even more agile. The two scrolls that Allen found in the gnoll priest's house were identified by Supervisor Phil as containing the 2nd-level spell 'Lighten' and the 1st-level divine spell 'Cure Light Wounds'. Before the battle, the Lighten scroll was given to Regis to use. His overall strength was greater than Allen's, and casting it on himself allowed Regis to be as light as a swallow in the soft mud, almost unaffected.

"Hmph!"

After several consecutive collisions, the force of the heavy weapons reverberating through Allen's body made his chest feel stuffy and nauseous. With a muffled groan, a mouthful of blood surged up, and the strength in his hands weakened considerably.

Wolf Fang, fighting two opponents alone, aimed more of his killing intent at Allen, who was also having difficulty moving, while ignoring the agile Regis. Although he severely injured Allen, the hobgoblin, he also suffered several cuts from Regis. Fortunately, he was wearing a suit of excellent chainmail, which protected his vital points, preventing Regis's attacks from significantly impacting his combat power. However, the gurgling blood mixed with rainwater flowed into the mud, and it was clear that his movements were gradually slowing down, a sign of weakness from excessive blood loss.

At the edge of the three powerful warriors' battle, no one dared to approach. However, just ten yards away, a group of hobgoblins, humans, and kobolds were engaged in a fierce battle. The hobgoblins, now armed to the teeth, wielded their sharp refined iron weapons, focusing on one target and attacking relentlessly. As long as they weren't at a disadvantage, the hobgoblins' combat power was still trustworthy. At least at this moment, they had unleashed their full potential.

The human mercenaries were the backbone of the force, their skillful cooperation and excellent equipment complementing each other. The kobolds who died at the hands of the seven human mercenaries numbered more than thirteen, not much less than the numerous hobgoblins.

The kobolds were caught off guard. In the unfavorable terrain, they lost a dozen men to the ranged weapons and slings that were fired at them, nullifying their numerical advantage. In addition, their weapons were more rudimentary. Struggling in the mud, their agile figures could not be used, and they could only rely on their weaker physical fitness to fight against the powerful hobgoblins. How could they be their opponents?

"Ha ya!!"

Wolf Fang mustered all his strength, pushing his anger to the extreme. The warhammer traced an arc in the air before slamming down on Allen in the mud. Allen, his movements restricted, could only brace himself and swing his greatsword once more to meet the blow. However, he was still no match for the opponent's charged attack. A mouthful of blood spurted out, and his body, mired in the mud, was sent flying, rolling several yards before stopping.

Regis, wanting to break away to provide assistance, was already too late. He could only take the opportunity to thrust his greatsword with all his might, aiming for the opponent's heart. However, in the end, he failed to completely succeed. The tip of the greatsword, after penetrating two inches into the chainmail, was firmly caught, unable to inflict further damage. However, the greatsword's enormous kinetic energy still caused the strong kobold Wolf Fang to suffer severe internal injuries, as evidenced by the bloody froth flowing from the corner of his mouth.

The situation was irrecoverable for the kobolds. The surviving kobolds could no longer resist the temptation to survive, and their will began to collapse, with some deserting. However, they seemed to have forgotten that even fleeing in this mud was not an easy task. Instead, they were easily harvested by the pursuing hobgoblins or human warriors.

"Spare me, spare me!!"

Some kobolds, seeing that they could not escape, quickly begged for mercy.

"Drop, weapons, spare, you, no, die."

The hobgoblins haltingly shouted in Common. Under their instructions, some of the kobolds could not help but lay down their weapons and obediently surrendered. The remaining kobolds were not so lucky. The hobgoblins, gradually gaining control of the battlefield, would not let go of these stubborn fellows for a piece of smoked meat to add to their meals, and they would kill them until they had cut off the opponent's left ear to prove that they had killed them.

The human mercenaries gradually restrained their attacks and began to clean up the battlefield, putting the valuable items from the kobolds into their pockets, which was their reward for this battle. The hobgoblins, under Allen's instructions, did not stop the human mercenaries from scavenging the battlefield, as long as they did not pick up the kobolds' crude weapons and equipment.

The last kobold to fall was the leader of this expedition, Wolf Fang, who had fought Allen and Regis for a long time. When Wolf Fang, who possessed extraordinary strength, finally fell, Allen collapsed into the mud. Seeing this, Regis quickly took out the Cure Light Wounds scroll from Allen's arms and cast it on him. Allen's pale face, which had turned from green, gradually regained some color.

If Wolf Fang had not been in intense combat, he would not have had the chance to stop the bleeding from the dozen or so wounds on his body, and he might have been able to fight Allen and Regis for a long time. Regis had clearly underestimated the opponent's strength, which made this battle extremely dangerous, and even Allen was shocked by his internal injuries and almost lost his life here.

However, the final result was gratifying. The combined hobgoblin and human forces, facing a number of kobolds far greater than their own, had almost wiped out all the kobolds in this valley at the cost of only three hobgoblins. This was a disaster for the kobolds, but it was a stroke of luck for the Green Field Tribe.
