#44 - Big Purchase
Chapter 44: The Big Purchase
Allen didn't even know how he got back to their inn last night. The next day, it was only after Phi Li and his helpers disturbed him that Allen raised his groggy head. After clearing his mind with some cold well water, he walked out of the inn to find Phi Li standing impatiently in front of a pile of cloth bags.
"Make sure you count them carefully this time, and don't say we're cheating you again."
Phi Li didn't hide the contempt in his eyes, pointing fingers at Allen impolitely.
"Hurry up, I have a big deal to do today. I've wasted a whole morning on your little bit of grain."
"If you can't hold your liquor, don't show off. These country bumpkins never know when to stop."
Allen didn't respond to Phi Li's unkind words. The other party had been of considerable help to him along the way, although this help came at the cost of deducting the grain promised to Allen. However, Allen and his people didn't care about the opinions of outsiders. Being discriminated against and ridiculed wouldn't cost them a piece of meat.
"Yes, this batch of hazelnut flour looks decent. Thank you, Manager Phi Li."
Allen carefully checked the grain in the cloth bags, a faint, friendly smile on his face, expressing his gratitude.
"Hmph, now that our contract is complete, we'll each go our own way in the future. You'd better avoid coming to our place, so we don't feel awkward."
Actually, their relationship was pretty good at the beginning, but Phi Li was too snobbish. When he needed Allen, he naturally greeted him with a smile, but after he no longer needed him, he looked down on him because of his hobgoblin identity. Especially after Allen saw through his attempt to cheat him last night, the petty Phi Li naturally wouldn't give Allen a good look.
"…"
Allen didn't refute. After entering the city, the two sides had already parted ways. Even their residences were far apart. Most elves were even more arrogant than humans, and many looked down on goblins. In order to ensure the smooth progress of his business, Phi Li stopped interacting with Allen too much after entering the city, so as not to be looked down upon by the elves.
"I wish Manager Phi Li a smooth journey back. Take care."
Only when Phi Li was about to leave did Allen say something that made the other party's stiff expression soften a little.
"May everything go well for you too. Take care."
After Phi Li left, Allen led his people to move the grain outside the inn into their already messy room, putting it together with yesterday's grain.
"Dasan, you and Heitou stay in the house and guard our grain. Huashe, you come with me for a walk."
After tidying everything up, Allen carefully instructed his tribesmen on their actions, and then took Huashe out for a walk, not forgetting to bring the last of their tribe's money.
After buying a batch of grain, Allen didn't have much money left, but he still had more than 160 gold coins. Most of these gold coins were obtained by Allen selling many of the spoils they brought to a merchant he knew at the temple. Otherwise, the cost of buying grain alone would have left them with very little.
In Allen's view, since these yellow and white things had been brought out, there was no point in painstakingly taking them back. In this civilized society, money was widely used and invaluable, but in their wilderness, these trinkets were just garbage piled up in the corners of the tribal leaders' residences, of little use.
In recent days, after in-depth exchanges with Priest Clay, Regis, and other friendly people in Thornsburg, Allen had some purchasing goals and had already inquired about relevant information. Now that the date for him and his people to return home was approaching, Allen no longer hesitated and prepared to spend all the money he had on him.
The goods in the temple and the regular stores in Thornsburg were naturally trustworthy, but their prices were also extremely high. With just a few gold coins on Allen, it would be a bit inadequate to arm even one person, let alone improve an entire tribe.
Scrolls could have a great or small impact on the tribe. Just like Regis said, many scrolls required specific timing to cast. How would those country bumpkins in Allen's tribe, who had never even seen magic a few times, understand these things? Weapons were also not under Allen's consideration. The Silver Flash Trading Company had already given Allen and his people weapons that armed most of the tribe's warriors, and in the battles with the kobolds and gnolls, Allen and his people had also gained a lot of spoils. Now, the tribe's warehouse was still piled with some weapons, and the tribe wouldn't lack weapons for a short time.
After several considerations, Allen decided to see if he could purchase a batch of studded leather armor and a batch of healing potions, which would have a significant impact on improving the tribe's combat effectiveness.
However, there were also certain skills involved in this kind of purchase. Regis had told Allen that it wasn't cost-effective to buy small batches of leather armor from armor shops in the city. It was best to look for stalls set up by mercenaries and adventurers in the alleys near the city square, where the prices were much more affordable.
Mercenaries and adventurers always had a lot of gains from each outing. Some people would entrust their gains to familiar and trusted artisans to make higher-value goods, which they would sell themselves, earning more than selling to raw material shops. After all, after each adventure and mission, adventurers needed a short time to recuperate and heal. Setting up a stall was also a good way to pass the time. It was difficult to resist spending money if they always stayed in taverns and inns.
Allen also found that there were more adventurers of all kinds in Thornsburg than in Thunder Town, and many were unorganized loners. To the north was the Gole Mountains, the thousand-mile-long range of the Elven Kingdom, with countless medicinal herbs and magical beasts; to the south was the lawless Mansa Wilderness. If you wanted to do anything illegal, as long as you were strong enough, no one would care if you directly robbed a large caravan.
This was a paradise for adventurers. Therefore, adventurers from the four major civilizations and strongmen from the wilderness all regarded this place as a temporary place to rest and recuperate. As a result, private transactions between adventurers were very prosperous. They had formed a certain scale, and even the elven guards in Thornsburg couldn't manage them, so they could only turn a blind eye and let these adventurers act.
Thornsburg had a square in both the north and south districts. The stalls near the south city square mainly sold wilderness specialties, while the north city mainly sold specialties from the Elven Kingdom and the Gole Mountains. Because Allen wanted to purchase leather armor and potions, it was better to go to the north city square. The Gole Mountains were famous for producing medicinal herbs and magical beasts, so the adventurers here mostly sold these two specialties.
"Come and take a look, three sets of freshly made Thunder Scale Lizard Leather Armor, with defense comparable to ordinary chainmail, and also has a certain reduction effect on electric and earth magic!"
"Strong healing potions, rage potions…, essential items for adventurers, selling at a loss!!"
This wasn't the first time Allen had been to these dark alleys, but every time he came, he still felt a little unaccustomed to the noisy scene. Acute hearing was an invisible punishment in this kind of place. Coupled with the price of getting drunk last night, Allen almost wanted to turn around and leave at this moment, but he finally endured it.
