#46 - Mystery Shop
Chapter 46: Mysterious Shop
North City's dark alley, Grey Shadow Lane, had already become a place of sorrow for Allen.
The first time he visited the dark alley a few days ago, although there were many who tried to strike up a conversation, fortunately, Allen was only visiting at the time and didn't make a decision to buy anything. People assumed he had no possessions, and after a while, they stopped bothering him. But today, after he bought a leather armor from the kobold's stall and revealed his bulging money bag, the endless stream of solicitations made him miserable.
One after another, several stall owners used their silver tongues to persuade Allen to buy several mediocre leather armors and a dozen bottles of healing potions. Although Allen's shopping list was filled considerably, looking at the smiles on the faces of those stall owners, Allen knew without thinking that he had probably been ripped off again.
Of course, Allen still didn't value money very much. Even after staying in Thunder Town and Thornsburg for many days and learning the use of money, it wasn't so easy to completely change a person's perception. Moreover, for Allen, exchanging the money that wasn't of much use in their hands for the 6-7 leather armors and a dozen bottles of potions in his luggage now was worth it.
However, the money spent on buying these goods exceeded Allen's expectations. If he didn't spend the remaining money carefully, he might not be able to buy the planned leather armor and potions.
"Bear Goblin sir, please wait a moment. Seeing your vigorous figure and great strength, I have an excellent weapon here that is just right for you. Why not..."
Another human stall owner wanted to strike up a conversation with Allen, but Allen took advantage of the fact that the other party hadn't blocked his path yet and casually glanced at the goods on the other party's stall. Seeing that there was nothing he needed, he unhesitatingly took Flower Snake and slipped away as if fleeing, no longer daring to talk to the other party.
After suffering several losses in a row, Allen understood that he was now seen as a fat sheep who was easy to deceive in the eyes of these adventurers and temporary merchants. With his shallow common sense, how could he cope with the various boasts of these silver-tongued persuaders in the dark alley? The only thing he could do was not give these merchants a chance to strike up a conversation, only look for stall owners who had the goods he wanted to buy, bargain, and leave after making a deal, without lingering too long.
The advantage of the goods in the many stalls in Grey Shadow Lane was that they were cheap and of good quality, which was much more affordable than buying from ordinary shops. However, the disadvantage was that the goods sold in these stalls were too single and not very numerous. For example, the leather armor that Allen needed, he only managed to buy about 7 pieces from the hands of 4-5 stall sellers. The most that one seller had was only two sets of leather armor that Allen found acceptable.
After all, the gains from each adventure of these low-level adventurers were not too great. Getting a complete animal skin when distributing spoils was considered a great harvest. To make a complete set of leather armor, at least one large complete animal skin was needed. Therefore, the stall owners would not have too many valuable items such as leather armor in their hands.
After scurrying around Grey Shadow Lane several times like a rat crossing the street, the luggage on Allen and Flower Snake's backs gradually filled up. After being deceived a few times at the beginning, the leather armor and potions that Allen bought later gradually approached the normal prices of the dark alley. By the time Allen stopped shopping contentedly, there were already 10 sets of leather armor and 20-odd bottles of ordinary healing potions in the luggage on their bodies, and Allen still had a dozen gold coins and dozens of scattered silver coins left in the money bag hidden in his chest.
He originally planned to go home, but when Allen passed the only shop in Grey Shadow Lane that was open to welcome guests, he was curious and went in to explore.
"Welcome, guest."
Although the business done in Grey Shadow Lane couldn't be said to be shady, it could be described as not being presentable. Therefore, many large chambers of commerce and organizations generally wouldn't get involved in it, so as not to lower their value. However, now that a shop was openly setting up shop in Grey Shadow Lane, Allen couldn't help but be curious about what goods they were selling.
The shop was empty and there were no customers. Therefore, when Allen walked in, a diligent human clerk came forward to greet him.
"What kind of goods do you sell here? Why don't I see you display them?"
Allen looked around the empty hall and couldn't guess what was being sold here. But he didn't want to leave just like that, so he asked.
"It seems that this is the first time the guest has visited our Exotic Goods Hall. What we sell here are not inanimate objects, but living things. If the guest is interested, you can follow me to take a look inside."
The clerk carefully looked Allen and Flower Snake up and down. After seeing the heavy luggage behind them and making an assessment, he relaxed his vigilance and enthusiastically beckoned.
"Living things? What kind of living things are there?"
Allen's curiosity was aroused once again.
"The guest will know by following me to take a look."
The clerk didn't say much, but smiled mysteriously, and then led the way to a doorway covered by reed curtains at the back of the hall.
"You wait for me here."
Although Allen was curious, he cautiously ordered Flower Snake, who was following behind him.
"Okay."
Flower Snake was curiously looking at the empty walls of the shop, envying this bright and clean residence, thinking that it would be great if the houses in their Green Field tribe were like this.
"If there is any change inside later, I will shout an alarm loudly. After you hear the alarm, go back and join Dasha and the others, and ask Brother Regis to come and find me."
Although he knew that the risk of encountering danger was very low, Allen still quietly leaned close to Flower Snake's ear and told him.
"Okay."
Flower Snake raised his head, and the strong voice with a strong halitosis made Allen feel a sense of trust in his heart.
Then, he handed the luggage on his back to Flower Snake to watch, and he followed the human clerk's footsteps in simple attire, not giving up the pace of exploration because of the unease in his heart. It was precisely because of his ignorance that Allen would not let go of anything unknown, so that he could understand the true face of this world faster.
The scene behind the reed curtain was completely different, as if a thin reed curtain had separated two completely different worlds.
Looking around, there were cages built of high-quality ironwood everywhere. In the cages were all kinds of species that Allen either recognized or didn't recognize. Allen even saw many figures of his own race, which made his face suddenly turn ugly. But before he could take any action, the obsidian statue that was originally standing like an inanimate object on the wall trembled. The two crystal-clear rubies inlaid in the position of the statue's eyes emitted a strange red light, scanning Allen wantonly.
"Guest, don't panic. This is our shop's guard -- a ghoul statue specially used to guard against unruly people. As long as the guest doesn't show hostility, they won't attack the guest."
Seeing the look of defensiveness on Allen's face, the human clerk quickly explained to Allen.
It was another strange magic. Allen had also seen the scene of a gnoll statue turning a gnoll directly into a monster. At this time, after receiving the human clerk's explanation, he had to restrain his hostility after weighing it in his heart, but he still prepared to fight at any time, closely following the human clerk's footsteps, and checking in the narrow corridor in the back hall with the other party.
