Green Monster Epic
#48 - Appraiser
“These two rubies are top-grade at a glance. Even one would be enough to offset the value of these goblins.”
The human shop assistant still had some business ethics. He took a cat's-eye-sized gem from Allen and carefully examined it under an oil lamp.
“However, I am not a professional appraiser after all. The price of this ruby needs to be determined by a professional appraiser before I can give the customer an answer.”
“That's understandable.”
Allen was satisfied with the other party's honesty. If the other party had deceived him and directly used the two rubies to offset the value of these goblins, Allen would have had an excuse to abandon these goblins and turn around to go home.
“Please wait a moment, sir.”
The human shop assistant returned the gem to Allen and turned to leave, not worried that Allen would take the opportunity to cause any damage.
Before long, a goblin, led by the human shop assistant, walked up to Allen and held out his hand to ask for the ruby.
“This is Firok, our chamber of commerce's chief appraiser. He will appraise the value of your ruby.”
The human shop assistant eagerly introduced the goblin appraiser, who was a little shorter than both of them.
Allen was surprised, never expecting that the appraiser in this shop would be one of his own kind.
The goblin appraiser, Firok, also didn't expect that today's customer would be one of his own kind. A complex expression flashed in his eyes, but he didn't show it too much. He simply took the two rubies Allen handed over and carefully appraised them.
“Transparent and flawless, with a deep color and a weight of about 113 phacs, it can be identified as a Level 1 gem. Used as a core for construct creatures, each gem is worth 150 gold coins.”
After weighing and examining the gems under a magnifying glass and on a scale, Firok gave a fair answer. This is the advantage of a shop with assets. Their business practices are mostly fair, unlike the peddlers in Gray Shadow Alley, who will take every advantage they can, with no bottom line.
“Sir, are you planning to sell both, or just one?”
Firok was actually secretly looking after Allen a bit. After all, few goblins could make a name for themselves, just like how he himself was now the chief appraiser of the chamber of commerce, which was due to too many opportunities. However, behind this opportunity was endless danger. One wrong choice and Firok would no longer exist.
Although he had only met Allen for the first time, Firok had already developed a good impression of him. The pure light in the other party's eyes radiated wisdom. Perhaps in the future, he could go further and bring some changes to the disaster-ridden goblin race. It was rare to see another member of his race who could accomplish something. Although he couldn't predict how far the other party could go, Firok didn't mind giving him a little benefit in an insignificant matter.
The two rubies in Allen's hand were indeed of Level 1 quality, but the price fluctuated quite a bit. Generally, the normal price fluctuated around 120-130 gold coins. Although the chamber of commerce was relatively fair, it was expected to squeeze out some value. However, Firok used his power to raise the price of the gems by 10%, which was considered a discount for his own kind.
The seemingly important position of chief appraiser allowed Firok to enjoy power and status that other goblins couldn't, but behind this, every choice he faced was watched by outsiders. A slight carelessness would lead to a disastrous end. With a few seemingly useless goblin slaves, Firok might only need to say a few words to give them a better living environment, but the chamber of commerce itself was involved in the slave trade. Even if he was in a high position, he was mostly powerless to reverse the future of countless goblins in the wilderness.
In his early years, Firok had rescued many members of his race with a burst of enthusiasm and settled them down, but the goblin race had flaws in each of its three branches. It took countless effort and money to cultivate talents from them. In the end, Firok could only let go sadly and allow the chamber of commerce to carry out all kinds of enslavement of the goblin race.
“Hmm…”
Allen was frightened by the price quoted by the goblin. He had been prepared for the high value of jewelry, but he didn't expect it to be so high. If he had known, he shouldn't have given Regis and the others a ruby. Perhaps Regis's later special treatment of him was related to giving them that gem.
“Sell one first.”
After thinking for a while, Allen still put away one ruby and handed the other gem to him.
Now that he had bought almost everything he needed, Allen didn't need too much jewelry. After selling this piece of jewelry, it would not only be enough to buy the goblins in the shop, but there might be a lot left over. Allen's arithmetic ability was not enough to calculate numbers over a hundred, so he could only roughly estimate it, and the rest depended on the final answer given by the shop.
“Then how many green skins do you want to buy? Are you going to buy all the goblins in this cage?”
Allen's wealth was so abundant that the human shop assistant, who had only had a few expectations, was overjoyed and quickly asked about his intentions.
“Buy them all, thank you.”
Allen nodded. He was worried about the small population of his tribe and was thinking about how to improve the tribe's strength. Now that he had encountered goblin slaves for sale, whether out of sympathy for his own kind or out of the needs of the tribe, he was prepared to buy all the goblin slaves in this shop.
“Boy, what are you going to do with so many goblins?”
Firok, who was standing beside him, interjected at this time and asked curiously.
Allen also had some recognition for a goblin with talent. He had encountered bear goblins and earth goblin adventurers along the way, and even chatted with them, but in the end, he was disappointed. These goblins who joined the ranks of adventurers and mercenaries were mostly relying on their strong physical fitness to barely become cannon fodder in other teams. Although they could communicate normally, they didn't give Allen a bright feeling of talent, and he couldn't even think of trying to win them over.
On the other hand, this goblin's martial talent might not even be half as good as Allen's, but the appraisal talent he showed required a knowledge base that Allen had always felt was lacking.
“Mr. Firok, I am the chief of the Green Field tribe in the Mansa Wilderness. Today, when I encountered these members of my tribe and saw their plight, I couldn't bear it. I just wanted to rescue them, and I have no other plans.”
Allen respected the other party's ability, and the gradually graying beard on his chin also verified the other party's old age, so he replied humbly.
“Green Field tribe? Where is that?”
Firok frowned and thought hard, but he gained nothing.
“Go northwest from here, pass through the Kobold Thunder tribe, then cross the Tagan Desert, and finally reach Green Lake. That's our tribe's territory.”
Allen was reluctant to reveal the location of his tribe in front of outsiders, but for some reason, he didn't hesitate much in front of this old goblin with burning eyes and said the approximate location of his tribe.
“Never heard of it. It doesn't seem like a big tribe.”
Firok shook his head, still gaining nothing.
“No matter what you buy these goblins for, since you say you are a tribe chief, then perhaps there are a few slaves that you will need.”
