#68 - God has mercy on me
Chapter 68: Heaven Have Mercy
It wasn't easy to drive a group of lazy bums out of the cave. After instructing Tea Blossom to prepare a not-so-lavish meal for everyone, Stone finally led 5-6 male hobgoblins, shaking their heads, to begin their only activity of the day.
"Stone, is there movement ahead?"
Having walked only a few hundred yards from the entrance, a sharp-eyed hobgoblin felt his vision blur. After vigorously wiping the sleep from the corner of his eye, he still pointed uncertainly towards the wilderness on the left and asked.
"What movement…?"
Stone's mind was still wandering, wondering what to eat for dinner. Hearing the clansman's question, he finally looked up and followed the direction the other was pointing. He saw a group of kobolds running towards the camp with vigorous strides, huffing and puffing.
"Enemies!!! Brothers, take up your weapons!!!"
At this critical moment, Stone didn't drop the ball. He raised the steel axe inherited from Allen and issued a battle cry with all his might.
"Run back to the village!!!"
However, his subsequent words revealed the true nature of the hobgoblin once again.
In fact, before Stone could speak, the clansmen beside him, sensing something was wrong, had already left him behind and rushed towards the village.
The sudden appearance of the kobold team, judging by its scale, was far stronger than Stone's small team of a few people. The hobgoblins, who bullied the weak and feared the strong, naturally wouldn't confront such a kobold team head-on. The simple fence around the village and the clansmen living within could bring everyone a sense of security.
"Close the gate!! Close the gate!!"
Stone stumbled and scrambled into the village. As one foot stepped inside, he heard Tea Blossom's sharp cry in his ear. Then, he saw female hobgoblins waving their thick arms, frantically closing the village gate.
"What to do, what to do!!!"
Stone was already out of his wits. As the leader, he had previously lorded over the clansmen, but now that it was his turn to make a decision, he couldn't come up with any ideas. He only knew to mutter these few words. His life had been like a walking corpse, listening to the arrangements of the clan leader and Allen. He had never truly made any major decisions. Of course, with his limited wisdom, he naturally couldn't come up with any good solutions.
"Calm down!!"
Tea Blossom, who had more experience than Stone, looked solemn. She walked up to Stone, firmly held his shoulders, and stared at him with her dark eyes, giving him a strong sense of conviction.
"It's not like we don't have the strength to fight. I'll organize the females now, and you lead the males to move the weapons locked in the warehouse and distribute them to the females."
"Yes, yes, yes, let's do that."
With someone giving him an idea, Stone seemed to have found his backbone. He led the equally bewildered warriors beside him to act according to Tea Blossom's arrangement.
"What has appeared outside is the ferocious kobold. If you don't want to lose your current life, then you need to contribute your strength!"
Tea Blossom began to mobilize the hobgoblin women around her. The main combat power of the clan had been taken away by Allen, and there were only 5-6 males beside Stone left in the village. Facing the 20-30 heads that suddenly appeared outside the village, Tea Blossom knew that they needed more manpower to stop the enemy's attack.
As for why the other party would suddenly attack their village, this question was never something the wilderness people needed to consider, because the conquest between different groups had always been the main theme of the wilderness, just like when Allen and the others suddenly attacked the gnolls and occupied the current territory.
"Clatter!!"
A pile of tattered weapons and equipment was thrown by Stone and the others in the open space in the middle of the village. The females, mobilized by Tea Blossom, frantically and fearfully picked up a set of equipment from the ground. Regardless of whether it fit or not, they put it on and climbed onto the fence around the village with Stone and the other males, peering out through the gaps in the fence.
What seemed like a long time had passed, but in reality, from the time Stone and the others discovered the kobold team to the time they fled back to the camp and took out the equipment for the females to wear, only a dozen minutes had passed. At this time, the kobold warriors, who had been running for three miles, were panting heavily. They happened to kill to the southeast corner of the village, intending to climb up the simple fence in one go and invade the hobgoblin's village.
"Kill!! Whoever can kill a kobold, I'll give him an extra meal tonight!"
Knowing what the clansmen wanted in their hearts, Stone, wielding his steel axe, smashed it into the head of a kobold who had just popped his head up, while not forgetting to cheer for the clansmen.
With Stone's words, the gluttonous hobgoblins also had some motivation to fight. In addition, the cohesion brought about by the extremely comfortable life these days made everyone reluctant to give up this good life and return to the hard days where they didn't know where their next meal was coming from. At least, in the first wave of confrontation, the hobgoblins, contrary to their previous behavior of turning around and fleeing when they saw the situation was not good, fought with the dozen or so kobolds who rushed to the fence first, fighting fiercely.
Taking advantage of the terrain, although the main combat force still had to rely on Stone and the other 5-6 males, with the help of the females, they barely managed to repel the first wave of kobold attacks.
Myer, who was covered in dust and dirt, returned to Bonecrusher with a bit of frustration on his face, not daring to look directly at Bonecrusher's scorching gaze.
"A bunch of trash!!"
Bonecrusher felt even more distressed for the two clansmen under the fence who were no longer moving. Originally, he thought that if the other party was unprepared, the clansmen's rapid march and charge to occupy the hobgoblin's periphery should be foolproof. But who would have thought that the heavens would not cooperate, and the hobgoblins would send out a team from the village at this time, just in time to detect the kobold team launching a surprise attack. By the time Myer and his team had killed to the front of the other party's village, the other party had already prepared for battle, causing Myer and his team to suffer a great loss.
"Everyone, get out of my way!"
Every kobold warrior was the result of Bonecrusher's hard work, and he was unwilling to let them be consumed brainlessly under the hobgoblin's fence. Therefore, he couldn't care less about his plan to hold the line. He waved his hand to signal the clansmen to stop attacking, and he would cast a spell to blast open this not-so-strong wooden wall.
Barely holding off the enemy's attack, Stone and the others didn't have time to brush away the blood on their bodies. They stared nervously at the kobolds who were slowly retreating, not knowing what the other party was going to do. However, being able to repel the other party's attack also increased the clansmen's will to resist, more or less. It seemed that these kobolds were not that strong after all.
