#71 - Allen's Pain
Chapter 71: Allen's Pain
A sense of foreboding arose in Allen's heart, and his premonition materialized with the return of the goblin, Jack.
"Your tribe was overrun by kobolds leading a force nearly a month ago."
Regret was evident in Jack's eyes as he delivered the news to Allen, contemplating what words of comfort he could offer.
However, never being one for consoling others, he couldn't think of anything suitable and despondently gave up.
After all, they were of the same race, and witnessing the devastation at the Greenwild Tribe's former site, he couldn't help but feel sorrow for these tribesmen struggling in the wilderness.
"What about my people?"
Allen's eyes dimmed, but he still looked up with a glimmer of hope and continued to inquire.
"In your village, I did find traces of bear goblins having lived there recently, but after searching around, I couldn't find them.
Perhaps they spotted me in advance and were hiding in the shadows, quietly observing me."
In truth, Jack was quite confident in his skills at concealing himself.
However, hoping to give his fellow tribesman, Allen, a bit more hope, he insincerely spoke of traces that he deemed unlikely.
"Oh."
Allen finally breathed a sigh of relief.
He knew very well what actions the bear goblins would take when faced with danger or military defeat.
Even if the kobolds were strong, they couldn't possibly wipe out the entire Greenwild Tribe.
Although he was also worried about the tribesmen who might have been captured by the kobolds, he couldn't regret anything since the event had already occurred.
In retrospect, all of this was Allen's own fault.
Having provoked the kobolds and taking the tribe's strong members out to bodyguard human merchants, it was only natural for the tribe to be targeted.
"So, what now? Are you still going back?"
Jack shook his head, shaking off the unnecessary sympathy in his mind.
He was now more concerned about whether Allen would honor their agreement and give him the remaining gold coins.
He didn't want to toil for a month, only to earn a small deposit and then be abandoned.
"Go back, we must go back!"
Allen's eyes were firm as he resolutely replied.
"The people of our Greenwild Tribe are not all dead yet, and sooner or later, we will avenge our people on those kobolds!"
In truth, Allen was also filled with worry and resentment.
Returning to Green Lake at this time, aside from anything else, just how to lead such a cumbersome team through the kobold territory blocking their path was a significant problem.
Not to mention that after returning, the kobolds would eventually discover their presence.
Unless Allen and his group abandoned the more prosperous Green Lake area and returned to their original old territory, the friction with the kobolds would continue.
But he absolutely couldn't give in.
The eyes of his fellow tribesmen, such as Flowsnake and Big Mountain, revealed not only burning anger but also undisguised frustration and a hint of sorrow after hearing about what happened to the tribe.
After all, these were tribesmen they had lived with for many years.
Even if the bear goblin tribe had a weak sense of community, since they could be called an intelligent race, they would ultimately have emotions such as joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness.
How could they not feel heartbroken by the plight of their tribesmen?
After witnessing the powerful tribes and civilizations outside, Allen had been constantly pondering how others expanded their tribes and how they united these individuals to contribute their strength for the sake of the entire tribe's strength.
Among them, Philip, his servant, was annoyed to death by Allen's questioning on this issue, but he had no choice but to continue racking his less-than-abundant brain, recounting the workings of human society to Allen in detail.
Finally, Allen understood a principle: relying solely on his own strength to obtain greater power was extremely difficult.
Because he didn't have a powerful backer, didn't have wealth that could rival a nation, and even his own physical talent wasn't considered a genius choice among the many races and individuals in the Feyman Plane.
The only thing he possessed was this group of tribesmen around him.
Therefore, he absolutely couldn't afford to lose this group of tribesmen around him again.
It wasn't easy to gather them under his command using food.
If this matter caused them to become disunited, then he would truly be alone, following in Regis's footsteps, becoming a pitiful mercenary fighting on the edge of life and death.
When Regis and the other human mercenaries looked at Allen and the other wilderness races, their eyes revealed emotions such as disdain and contempt.
However, in Allen's eyes, a group of individuals who originally possessed great strength were being ordered around by an ordinary human, being instructed to do things that didn't suit their status.
In fact, Allen and the others couldn't help but feel unworthy for them.
Allen, who advocated freedom, didn't want his future to be like Regis and the others, becoming servants and bodyguards for others for the sake of some fancy external objects, just spending his life like that.
If that were the case, it would be better to struggle in the wilderness every day just for three meals, which would be much more carefree.
This was also Allen's true inner thoughts when he tactfully rejected Regis's invitation.
"Yes, avenge them!!!"
His fellow tribesmen, such as Flowsnake, Big Mountain, and A'Xiao, were all agitated, roaring in anger.
Goblins were also good at holding grudges.
Now that they had been reminded by Allen, everyone also shifted their hateful gaze to the kobolds, and their previous negative attitude had changed.
"Let's fuck them up!!!"
"Heh heh!"
Jack laughed awkwardly, then made a request to Allen: "I won't participate in the struggles between your wilderness tribes, so can my mission be considered complete? Chief Allen, would you like to pay me the rest of my reward?"
"Oh, that's only right!"
Allen came back to his senses and, after thinking for a moment, gave Jack a definite answer, which made him overjoyed.
At least, Allen had never intended to default on his debt.
Taking out his money bag from his chest, Allen counted out a few gold coins, together with the deposit he had previously paid Jack, which was considered the full payment for Jack's guide mission this time.
Jack happily took the gold coins, carefully checked them one by one to make sure they were correct, and put them into his arms.
Only then did he speak again, giving Allen a heartfelt piece of advice.
"To be honest, Chief Allen, with the strength of your current team, going to make trouble for the kobolds is likely to be more dangerous than promising.
It would be better to avoid their gaze first, go back and develop well for a period of time, and then bring up the matter of revenge, perhaps there will still be a chance."
After all, they were of the same race, and he also liked the other party's personality.
Jack still felt somewhat sorry for Allen and his group's experience, so he didn't want to see the situation where he would step into the abyss right after he left.
Of course, he couldn't control whether Allen would accept his advice in the end.
