Green Monster Epic
#8 - Recovering from injuries
Chapter 8: Healing
More than half a month had passed since the duel, and the Greenwood Tribe had returned to its usual ways.
In the past half month, the new chieftain, Allen, had spent too much time recovering from his injuries, even entrusting the usual hunting and raiding to the foolish Stone. One could imagine how difficult life had been for the Greenwood Tribe during this time.
Fortunately, after killing the former chieftain, Claw, in one fell swoop, Allen automatically inherited Claw's wealth. To keep the tribesmen content during his recovery, Allen had no choice but to take out the food Claw had collected over the years, barely managing to sustain everyone.
Selfishness was the nature of creatures in the wilderness, and Allen was no exception. He was unwilling to share the food he had won from challenging Claw, but being severely injured in the duel, and almost crippled, Allen couldn't allow other warriors in the tribe to take the opportunity to challenge him again, otherwise his fate wouldn't be much different from Claw's.
Therefore, after some deliberation, Allen made the difficult decision to share the food with the tribesmen, which calmed the restless crowd.
Half a month was enough for the thick-skinned, rough-fleshed hobgoblins to recover from most injuries. As for Allen, who had suffered a bone injury, after taking a healing potion secretly kept by Claw, his bone growth accelerated, and he had recovered considerably. Apart from a slight discomfort in the muscles and bones where the steel axe had struck, his daily activities were not significantly affected.
Of course, Allen wasn't idle during this half month. For example, he kept the tribe's only dozen or so promising youngsters by his side, tasking them with cleaning the cave that Claw used to live in, which had now become his residence, while also teaching the little goblins Common Tongue.
The goblin race, having long lost its civilized heritage, now found even normal communication difficult. In the Greenwood Tribe, after the death of the former chieftain, Claw, there was no one else who could converse normally with Allen. Even Stone, who had been by Allen's side for over a year, could only stutter and stumble through conversations with Allen under his tutelage. As for the other tribesmen, they could only express some simple emotions. Rather than calling them intelligent beings, it would be more accurate to say they were a group of beasts with some intelligence.
In the past, Allen didn't mind not being able to communicate, as long as he ensured his own safety. But now that he had become the chieftain of the Greenwood Tribe, even if it was just to make it easier to command these guys, it was necessary to give everyone some guidance in communication. Allen thought so, and then began with the little goblins who were easiest to educate.
Allen didn't really know how to teach children, he was just talking and chatting with a group of little guys, thinking that as long as they understood what he meant, they would probably be able to speak as well. Therefore, for half a day, Allen was just talking to himself, describing those magical dreams in his mind like stories, listening to a group of little guys staring at Allen with wide, blank eyes.
However, Allen was also hitting the nail on the head by chance. Since hobgoblins were recognized as intelligent races by the proud humans, elves, and other ruling races, then they must have above-average intelligence. It was just that survival in the Mānshā Wilderness was difficult, and most of the tribesmen would hibernate and move less to reduce consumption, not to mention communicating with others. At the same time, they had few opportunities to contact the outside world, which made small tribes like the Greenwood Tribe look no different from primitive tribes.
A group of little hobgoblins who were still in their developmental stage and curious about society, after having Allen as their unreliable teacher, and with some messy teaching, within half a month, 3 of the more intelligent little hobgoblins were able to say a complete sentence and express their emotions.
The children had made progress, and Allen, as a teacher, was naturally more motivated. Intelligent creatures were social animals, and Allen also hoped to have a group of tribesmen around him who could communicate normally, rather than a group of beasts who only knew how to eat, drink, and reproduce.
"That's all for today, everyone go out and help your mothers prepare dinner!"
"Hahaha ~ ~"
"Goodbye, Chieftain."
A group of energetic little hobgoblins, after being released, ran out of the cave, laughing and jumping, towards the tribe's open square. There, a group of female hobgoblins, hanging two coconut shells, were busy preparing dinner for the afternoon.
It wasn't until the sun was about to set that the hunting team in the tribe, led by Stone, passed through the tribe's simple fence.
Before the team had fully entered the camp, Stone, walking in the front, had already begun to shout, showing off today's harvest to Allen: "Allen, look, porcupine, gray rabbit."
Today's harvest was good. Stone and the others had hunted a porcupine weighing about 200 pounds. This herbivorous animal, fierce by nature in the wilderness, could shoot the sharp spines on its back like arrows when hunted, with enough power to pierce the hobgoblin's flesh. Therefore, they were not so easy to capture. Just looking at the several wounded in the team, Allen could guess the intensity of the battle.
"Yes, not bad."
With this two-hundred-pound porcupine, the tribesmen's lives would be much better for the next two days. Supplemented by the berries and wild vegetables picked by the female goblins, filling everyone's stomachs shouldn't be a big problem.
Originally, Allen was thinking that if there was no major harvest today, then he would have to lead everyone out to hunt and raid himself tomorrow. Allen knew Stone's abilities very well, but he was the only trustworthy person by his side. If he allowed other goblins to lead the hunt, he would worry that someone would become ambitious and launch a challenge against him.
After Allen successfully challenged Claw, the ambition of the tribe's warriors, which had been suppressed by Claw for twenty years, gradually began to loosen. Allen secretly observed and noticed several powerful hobgoblins with fierce glints in their eyes.
The reason why everyone had not yet taken action was partly due to the inertia of being suppressed by Claw for a long time, and partly due to being deterred by the tragic end of Claw, the challenger who had been defeated.
At that time, Allen, who clearly had victory in his grasp, and could have watched Claw's throat being cut and suffocated without any other action, dragged his injured leg and mustered his strength to give the opponent a decapitating blow, in order to deter the other tribesmen with a fierce posture. Subsequently, Allen did not abandon Claw's cold corpse, but ordered Stone to clean it up, and took everyone to roast it directly that afternoon and share it with everyone.
Such a price ultimately made the twenty-nine warriors in the Greenwood Tribe become obedient, and they no longer dared to rashly challenge Allen. In addition, with the support of Stone, a powerful assistant, Allen finally completely secured his position as the chieftain of the Greenwood Tribe in half a month.
