Green Monster Epic

#80 - Sending a letter

Chapter 80: Sending a Letter

"Elder, there's a goblin outside who says he has a letter from the Greenwild Tribe's chieftain to deliver to you."

Zul casually tossed the goblin, missing its left arm, onto the ground like a dead thing. If not for the murky liquid seeping from the goblin's linen trousers and the accompanying stench, along with the constant trembling, one would have mistaken it for a goblin corpse.

Zul didn't dare bring the goblin into the Bonecrusher's wooden hut, knowing the Bonecrusher's nose was extremely sensitive and wouldn't be able to endure the stench of the goblin's fear-induced excrement. Instead, he stood outside the door and shouted loudly inside.

"Oh, the Greenwild Tribe? Are they the green skins from the northeast?"

Hearing the commotion, the Bonecrusher opened the door and stepped out of the hut, looking at the undignified goblin on the ground with a hint of surprise.

"Who else could it be!"

Zul responded boisterously, "Elder, not to criticize, but isn't it time we mobilized our forces and wiped out this returning group of green skins? Keeping them under our noses makes people think we're afraid of them!"

The intelligence about the return of the Bear Goblin tribe's main force had been discovered by Night, who was monitoring their movements, a few days prior. After reporting back to the Bonecrusher, the Bonecrusher had yet to issue an order to mobilize, only instructing everyone to prepare for the expedition. This had made the war-hungry Kobold chieftains somewhat impatient.

As the tribe's leader, the Bonecrusher didn't act solely on instinct like the other chieftains. He had many things to consider, such as the gains and losses of war, long-term plans, and so on. The Bear Goblins were indeed favored by the earth, and their individual combat strength was far superior to that of the Kobolds. This was an undeniable fact. A mere Advanced Bear Goblin, who had broken through during combat, leading a group of old, weak, and disabled tribe members, had caused the Bonecrusher Tribe to lose three members and leave two severely crippled in the battle to capture Green Lake. The Bonecrusher still felt a pang of pain for these losses.

Now that their chieftain had returned, an unquestionable Advanced Combatant, along with ten strong and well-equipped core tribe members, the Bonecrusher couldn't imagine the cost of attacking their tribe again. Of course, the scales of victory had always been on his side. The Bonecrusher never wavered on this point. What he needed to consider was how to minimize the tribe's losses in this battle.

"Bring the letter, let me take a look!"

The Bonecrusher didn't respond to Zul's battle spirit. His prestige in the Bonecrusher Tribe wouldn't be shaken by ignoring his tribe members' emotions. Instead, he was more curious about what the green skin leader had written in the letter.

A green skin who had started learning to read and write might bring many changes to the tribes of the Greenwild Plains, which had been peaceful for too long. For some reason, the Bonecrusher suddenly had this thought, but he quickly banished it from his mind. As a spellcaster, he would certainly not be unable to suppress a young green skin.

Zul handed the letter written on parchment to the Bonecrusher. Seeing the neat common language written on the parchment, the Bonecrusher immediately judged that this letter couldn't have been written by a green skin. Even as a spellcaster, who had studied common language to better cast spells, after decades of effort, his writing was barely better than the writing on this letter.

It seemed he had overestimated the green skin chieftain, the Bonecrusher scoffed self-deprecatingly, then carefully examined the contents of the letter.

"Respected Elder of the Bonecrusher Tribe, please accept the sincere greetings of the earth's favored child. Last time, your side took advantage of our tribe's main force being away and rashly attacked our tribe's camp, causing countless losses to our tribe…"

The other content on the paper was all empty, blustering threats, not worthy of much attention from the Bonecrusher. Only the last two paragraphs were the true intention of the letter's owner.

"Although there have been many misunderstandings between our two tribes, I am still willing to meet with Elder Bonecrusher to resolve the misunderstandings and prevent them from becoming the sole source of hatred for our descendants."

"If Elder Bonecrusher is willing, he can lead two warriors from his tribe to the Blade Stone Land on the border of our two tribes before the seventeenth day of the Radiant Moon. I, Alan Greenwild, will be waiting there for the Elder's arrival."

The Bonecrusher really hadn't expected that the green skin chieftain would be so bold as to dare to meet him alone. Was he not afraid that he would simply kill him on the spot?

The strength of the spellcaster profession lay in the fact that when they were prepared, they could choose the combination of spell slots according to the situation, often killing targets several levels higher. Even legendary existences with essential differences could be contended with by high-level spellcasters for a short time without falling too far behind if they were well-prepared.

"Elder, what's written on this paper?"

Zul was very curious. Night and other tribe members, hearing the news, also learned everything from Zul when the Bonecrusher unfolded the parchment to read. At this time, they also looked at the Bonecrusher with inquiring eyes.

"The green skin chieftain has invited me to meet him in the Blade Stone Land. What do you say, should I agree to him?"

The Bonecrusher laughed heartily, looking around at his children with high spirits. These strong lads were all the fruits of his careful cultivation. Every time he saw them gathered together, he felt a sense of pride.

"Agree to what? I say we just kill them directly and wipe out this group of green skins!"

Zul still insisted on his own idea, gaining the support of Mair, flexing his muscles with excitement.

"I'm curious, what gave him the courage!"

Night was somewhat unhappy. The Bonecrusher's position in their tribe was lofty. How could he meet with a mere green skin just because they wanted to see him? Such a disrespectful attitude made Night, who considered himself superior to green skins, feel insulted and very displeased.

"Hehe, I've become a little interested in this green skin and want to see what he's thinking, what can convince me to put aside my hostility towards his tribe."

The tribe members' answers made the Bonecrusher both satisfied and somewhat disappointed. He was satisfied with their attitude and spirit, but disappointed with their overly arrogant tempers, as if the green skin tribe was just a lamb waiting for them to slaughter.

"Then I request the Elder to choose me to go with him. I also want to meet this green skin and see his methods."

Night took the initiative to volunteer, being the first to step forward and make a statement.

"You can't. In terms of direct combat, your skills are still lacking. If the Elder is going, for his safety, we must choose the strongest warriors in the tribe."

Zul didn't give way. Having been the top contributor in the last battle against the Greenwild Tribe, Zul had tasted the sweetness when distributing the spoils of war, and naturally didn't want to miss this opportunity to gain military功劳.

"Stop arguing, they specifically requested that only two tribe members can be brought to the meeting."

The Bonecrusher waved his hand, signaling the tribe members present to calm down, and began to arrange the upcoming accompanying members.
