Malfoy didn't overthink it; he directly answered the headmaster's inquiry.

“After attending the ghost banquet, we were originally planning to go to the Great Hall to see if we could grab something to eat.”

“On the way, Potter heard some strange voices, saying someone was planning to kill someone in the castle.”

“Potter followed the voice all the way to the third-floor corridor.”

“We were going to go directly to the Great Hall to find the professors, but we were spotted by everyone after only taking two steps.”
