Hogwarts: Wizards of Eternity
#42 - Nip the world-class crisis in the bud
Hagrid could be a bit muddle-headed at times, but he was always clear on matters of right and wrong.
When he realized that the magical creature he had bred could potentially cause a world-class disaster, he reluctantly agreed to Roger's request.
Seeing this, Roger nodded, but didn't immediately start eliminating the Fear Demons. Instead, he used magic to bind the Fear Demons Hagrid had bred, and cast spells to seal off a large area around them.
Then he left the hut near the Forbidden Forest and headed straight for Hogwarts Castle.
Back at Hogwarts, Roger went to the Divination classroom.
Divination was an elective course for third-year students, and he hadn't taken it in his first year.
"Professor Trelawney, could you come out for a moment?"
The moment Trelawney saw Roger, she couldn't help but shudder.
After all, as a lame diviner who relied on the half-baked talent inherited from her seer ancestors, and whose divinations were sometimes accurate and sometimes not, it was really difficult for her to stand up straight when she encountered a truly powerful seer.
Roger wasn't familiar with Professor Sybill Trelawney, who taught the course. His sudden visit made Trelawney think that this true seer was going to smash her rice bowl.
Fortunately, Roger quickly explained his intentions, which relieved her.
Roger had a letter left by Dumbledore, which was not only a token but also a magical item that could mobilize many of Hogwarts' resources, equivalent to half the headmaster's authority.
Roger ordered Sybill Trelawney to temporarily stop teaching and summoned the students she considered to have genuine divination abilities.
Professor Sybill Trelawney was usually eccentric, and most of the time in class she was doing 'psychological divination'… the kind of tricks played by fortune-tellers and fake Taoists on the street, nine out of ten sentences were false, but she did have divination abilities.
The prophecy about Harry and the Dark Lord was her work.
She could naturally see which of her students had genuine divination abilities.
With the headmaster's token, Roger quickly assembled a team of diviners.
In divination, divining what has already happened is much easier than divining what might happen in the future.
Roger called these people over to prevent any possible omissions, to ensure that all Fear Demons in existence were completely annihilated!
Although Roger was a seer, his main abilities were focused on danger prediction. His predictions in other areas weren't completely useless, but they didn't reach the level of a 'seer'.
So, a multi-faceted verification and cross-examination approach was safer.
There wasn't much to say about the elimination process; one spell was enough to kill them.
Fear Demons that hadn't fully matured weren't that difficult to deal with.
It's like how any bird of prey is fragile when it's still an egg.
But everything didn't end with the completion of the elimination.
After a screening process more exaggerated than a biosafety level 4 laboratory, Roger had Hagrid go find the little girl named Luna who could see the Crumple-Horned Snorkacks.
On the other hand, he returned to Hogwarts again, directly seeking out Professor McGonagall, who was most familiar with him and also the highest-ranking person in the school.
"Contact the Ministry of Magic?" Professor McGonagall's eyes widened.
"Yes, I need to speak directly with Minister Fudge and the person in charge of the Department of Mysteries," Roger said seriously.
"However, with my identity, my words carry little weight. I hope you can convey my meaning to them on my behalf."
What Roger was going to do next was simple: he wanted to inform the Ministry of Magic and the Department of Mysteries about the existence of the Fear Demon species and the potential harm it could cause.
Although the Department of Mysteries was nominally a subordinate agency of the British Ministry of Magic, in reality, the Department of Mysteries was established even earlier than the Ministry of Magic. Even the Minister of Magic sometimes couldn't completely interfere with all the internal affairs of the Department of Mysteries.
This department, which studies the most cutting-edge areas of wizarding civilization such as time, death, souls, and the universe, has a certain degree of independence, so it was best to talk to both sides.
Of course, to avoid some legal troubles and other future problems, Roger wouldn't mindlessly reveal all the information.
He would suggest that the Ministry of Magic seal the information file about the existence of Fear Demons, like some of the Department of Mysteries' internal research that had never been made public, with a magic similar to the Fidelius Charm, and create a targeted plan.
As for the Fear Demons, he would only state that they were bred from Boggarts and another magical creature, but he wouldn't say that the other magical creature was a Crumple-Horned Snorkack, or other details.
Anyway, as long as the Ministry of Magic strengthened the control of Boggarts, the Crumple-Horned Snorkacks naturally couldn't clap with one hand… If Hagrid hadn't used special methods, these two creatures wouldn't have any connection in nature.
As for Luna's side, he would deal with it later, not only with information control, but also to prevent Luna from encountering unnecessary trouble because of this, he would also release some false information.
… Lies and strategic deception are different. Although Roger hated lies, he wasn't that rigid.
"Why?" Professor McGonagall was a little puzzled.
Since Roger had already settled the matter, there was no need to report it to the Ministry of Magic, right?
Blood is thicker than water was also a certain convention in this small and flat wizarding society… Sometimes people wouldn't easily escalate things to a higher level unless things became unmanageable.
Knowing what Professor McGonagall meant, Roger replied, "Covering up isn't the best way to solve the problem."
If Hagrid could create Fear Demons, others could too. Roger didn't believe that only Luna was the only instance in the entire human civilization who could see 'Crumple-Horned Snorkacks' in countless years to come.
Not only in the future, but perhaps some ancient wizards could also see them, only they were called by another name in the mouths of ancient wizards… Perhaps, Crumple-Horned Snorkacks were the inner demons in the mouths of some people in the East?
If in the future there was someone who happened to meet the conditions of Hagrid and Luna, and the Fear Demons appeared again and quietly spread, what would happen?
"Since we realize the possibility of a crisis, we must solve it. We can't just let the people of this generation realize the existence of the problem, or cause trouble, but ignore it and let all the dangers quietly ferment until they become uncontrollable, and then pass them on to future generations to bear, right?"
So, it was better to have the Department of Mysteries come up with a related plan.
"Doing this may bring you some…"
"I know," Roger interrupted Professor McGonagall's advice.
Back in the Middle East battlefield, Roger had the opportunity to leave, but he didn't. He chose to keep his promise and play the entire game.
Back in the Wizengamot, it might have been safer to have a lawyer defend him, but Roger didn't want to transfer his life and death into the hands of someone he couldn't trust, so even though he knew the ending might not be good, he still defended himself and chose his own destiny.
Roger had actually said from the beginning that he was a person who feared death, and he had never denied this.
But… for Roger, 'self-will' was also a part of life.
Doing things that violated his bottom line and growing into someone he hated was equivalent to death in Roger's eyes!
If I am no longer myself, what is the use of keeping this body?
Therefore, Roger would always fight and would never do what he believed was wrong.
Professor McGonagall looked at Roger's calm eyes, nodded, and got up to contact the Ministry of Magic and the Department of Mysteries through Hogwarts' channels.
After the professor left, Roger suddenly rubbed his forehead while waiting for both parties to arrive.
He suddenly remembered something.
Since he provided ideas and some technology that accidentally led Hagrid to create this magical creature with extremely disastrous potential, such a thing could happen once, then it was definitely possible for it to happen a second time.
It seemed that outsourcing his path to others couldn't be too casual.
"Harry…" Thinking of Harry, who might come to him, Roger frowned slightly.
In a sense, Harry was the protagonist of a certain fate trajectory.
If Harry really started to cultivate the path of Time Magic and something went wrong, Roger didn't think the trouble he could cause would be smaller than Hagrid's.
"I have to put some insurance measures in place."
