Hogwarts: Wizards of Eternity
#89 - Standing on the Timeline (Fourth update, please subscribe)
"Theoretically, it won't work." Voldemort flipped through the documents seized from the Department of Mysteries, his lips curling in distaste.
Originally, he had planned to use time magic to send the Horcrux ring thousands or even tens of thousands of years into the future, ensuring a chance to rise again in case of failure.
But after reviewing the Department of Mysteries' research on time magic, he realized he was simply overthinking things.
From beginning to end, there was no magic that could truly travel to the future; the closest thing was a spell called 'Time Amber'.
This was a magic jointly developed by the Time Chamber, responsible for time exploration within the Department of Mysteries, and the Planets Chamber, responsible for cosmic exploration.
It could partially freeze the time of the target until the magic wore off.
It was considered 'partial' because after the spell was lifted, all the time that had been suspended would manifest on the target within a single day.
For example, a 10-year-old child whose time was frozen for sixty years would rapidly age from 10 to 70 years old within the first day after the spell was broken.
A useless spell.
This was Voldemort's assessment after seeing Time Amber.
He figured it was a useless thing only immortal beings would use for hibernation during space travel.
Horcruxes, on the other hand, weren't affected by the passage of time, but after being subjected to the spell, the Horcrux wouldn't disappear from the present time; if someone who knew how to break the curse were to find it...
"What are you going to do next?" Grindelwald asked while absentmindedly fiddling with a Time-Turner as Voldemort reviewed the files.
Although Grindelwald had seen Voldemort's future, Voldemort's future wasn't set in stone.
Until he made a choice, even Grindelwald couldn't know which direction this chaotic future would turn.
Voldemort glanced at Grindelwald, and he considered regrouping his former followers.
But the timing wasn't right.
Both in terms of reputation and power, Grindelwald currently surpassed him.
If he gathered his forces, it was uncertain how many of those treacherous Death Eaters would remain loyal to him.
Perhaps only the core members who fanatically worshipped him would stay true, while the rest might switch allegiances.
Voldemort had no interest in paving the way for someone else's success.
Voldemort and Grindelwald were superficially similar.
Both sought to gather a small group of elite wizards, cleanse Muggle-sympathizing wizards, and establish a new world order with wizards on top and Muggles below.
But their underlying philosophies were completely different!
Voldemort's guiding principle was extreme self-interest; he simply wanted to be the King of the World, but he looked down on Muggles.
However, he later realized that the power of the wizarding world, at the time, had less development potential than Muggle civilization.
The wizarding world's upper limit hadn't seen any new breakthroughs in thousands of years, while Muggle civilization was advancing by leaps and bounds.
When his own magical path, like those of many past genius wizards, hit an invisible barrier and couldn't progress further, he decided to make a desperate gamble.
Unwilling to captain a ship destined to sink, Voldemort abandoned the promising future of becoming Minister of Magic and transformed into the Dark Lord.
Grindelwald, on the other hand, didn't care whether he was the ultimate ruler; he simply believed that only he could lead the wizarding world forward, that everyone else was pathetic and incapable.
How could the wizarding world thrive when surrounded by such self-serving worms? So he gathered his followers and started doing great things.
Like the saying 'For the Greater Good', when Grindelwald sincerely believed a more suitable person appeared, he would choose to step down.
Voldemort's resolve could be shaken by Roger's words about Muggles, leading him to consider 'joining if you can't beat them', causing him inner turmoil.
But such a thing would never happen to Grindelwald; he firmly stood on the side of wizards.
Regarding their differences, both Grindelwald and Voldemort were well aware.
But Voldemort's 'henchmen' didn't care about ideological differences; most of them came to gain more benefits, gather more power, and obtain more strength in the process of doing great things.
Dissatisfied with the existing order, they simply wanted to smash the old order and establish a new one where they could profit more.
As for who the boss was, what the boss's dream was—honestly, many of them didn't care that much.
Opportunistic sycophants, scheming families, profit-driven dark wizards—Voldemort's Death Eaters naturally lacked cohesion; as soon as he dared to gather them, they would dare to defect to Grindelwald's side!
Of course, Grindelwald's side wasn't a garbage can, taking in everyone; he would only take the most elite.
But this made it even harder for Voldemort to accept.
Wouldn't I become a beggar eating scraps that others don't want?
After a long silence, Voldemort looked at Grindelwald and said, "Find a secluded place; I need to reorganize my magical path."
After experiencing so many setbacks, Voldemort deeply realized a truth.
You have to be strong yourself; if your own strength isn't enough, don't dream of becoming the King of the World.
In this era of talented individuals, the current him was too weak!
In his youth, no one around him could compare to him.
But if you lengthen the timeline, facing those strong individuals who had appeared in the past or would appear in the future, he was just a mortal.
He hadn't created the Horcrux himself; he was just standing on the shoulders of giants, innovating on what had come before.
Now, he could still use the 'agreement' to borrow Grindelwald's power.
But what about the future?
Even if everything went smoothly, could he really push Grindelwald to the front to fight Roger, and then sit back and watch the battle?
The two would eventually have a victor.
Whether Roger won or Grindelwald won, the remaining one would become a major obstacle on his path to becoming the King of the World.
What would he do then?
Find another hidden expert from some remote valley?
Don't be ridiculous.
Reaching into his robes, Voldemort gently stroked the first Horcrux of his life.
The ambition to conquer the world, the fear of 'not being myself', the desire for power, the entanglement, and the despair of facing so many strong individuals and the trends of the times.
Countless complex emotions mixed together, and in the end, ambition won!
If I cannot be great, then what is the meaning of my existence?
At this moment, Voldemort finally made up his mind.
He would merge with the diary Horcrux.
No, that's not enough.
Far from enough!
Even if his mind returned to its youth, how could the young him be a match for the two Seers of the younger generation?
I need to be stronger, to surpass my peak!
Since he had broken through the illusion of 'not being myself', Voldemort simply threw caution to the wind and completely went mad.
"What are you—" Gellert Grindelwald frowned as he watched Voldemort pick up a Time-Turner and hold it in his hand.
"There are many taboos in time travel," Voldemort said with a deep gaze.
"One of them is that you cannot meet your past self."
He softly recited the rules summarized by the Time Chamber of the Department of Mysteries.
"Because something very terrible will happen."
As he spoke, Voldemort's mind flashed with the cases he had just seen in the files.
Those wizards who killed their 'past' and 'future' selves.
Was the one who survived really the 'present'?
Who knows.
"Grindelwald, last year, I witnessed what a true magical genius is."
"Even at my peak, my talent is far inferior to his."
"That kind of completely unreasonable monster, I don't know how to defeat him."
"Grindelwald, mortals cannot defeat monsters," Voldemort said to Grindelwald.
But Gellert Grindelwald felt that he was more like talking to himself: "What are you trying to say?"
"Only monsters can defeat monsters!" A hint of madness flashed in Voldemort's eyes.
"I will also become an existence beyond common sense!"
The next moment, he turned the Time-Turner.
One Voldemort appeared, two Voldemorts, three, five, ten, twenty—"
As one of the most powerful dark wizards in the world, Voldemort had a wide range of knowledge.
Especially in the field of dark magic.
He had heard that in the distant East, there was a very vicious dark magic called 'Gu'.
Those who studied this path would collect a large number of venomous creatures, making them kill each other.
Under the ritual of magic, the last remaining individual would carry some of the advantages of the other lives it had devoured and killed, becoming an even more terrifying dark magical creature.
Why limit it to things like venomous insects?
A Time-Turner, plus Horcruxes.
Voldemort felt that he might be able to cultivate a more powerful, more perfect, more terrifying...himself!
"These young people these days are all crazier than the last—" Grindelwald couldn't help but exclaim as he watched the manic scene before him.
Just as Voldemort had an idea, Roger had already foreseen the future scene.
"That's interesting." Roger didn't expect that the answer Voldemort would ultimately give would be this.
The path to immortality that Roger wanted to take was to dismantle the Id, which symbolizes instinct, deconstruct the Superego, and use the former as nourishment to nurture the Ego.
Voldemort, however, embarked on the instinct to conquer fear, overcome his ego, abandon himself, and dedicate everything to the path of the superego.
Advance, engrave, advance, engrave.
Eternal self-renewal.
Roger had already witnessed Voldemort's "Path of Immortality" ascending to a new level!
For Voldemort, from this point on, the world was completely different!
"The old seniors of the wizarding world really can't be underestimated; one really can't relax at all."
Since the initial framework of the Three-Dimensional Theory, Roger's pace had slowed down a bit.
Now it seems that some things still need to be pushed forward as soon as possible.
"Headmaster Dumbledore, I have a new idea. What do you think?"
Dumbledore, who was troubled by the external disturbances, turned to look at Roger entering the room.
Roger was holding a book in his hand, the title of which was—
