#212 - Private Ryan
The script is called "The Legendary Life of Fritz Niland."
It tells the story of Fritz Niland, a soldier from E Company of the 101st Airborne Division during World War II. After E Company captured Carentan, he learned that his brother Bob, from the 82nd Airborne Division, had been killed in action. At the same time, his other brother in the 4th Infantry Division was also killed on Utah Beach. Soon after, his third brother, a pilot, was shot down by the Japanese and reported missing while on a mission in the China-Burma-India Theater.
On the same day, Mrs. Niland received three telegrams informing her of her sons' deaths. Fritz was the only surviving son in the family. After receiving the news, the Army Chief of Staff ordered a special team to the front lines to bring Fritz back home.
This story is based on a true story from World War II and looks a lot like "Saving Private Ryan," but it also has more than 60% differences.
The male lead in the script is Fritz. The male lead receives news of the deaths of his three brothers on the front lines, plunging him into grief. He vows to fight the enemy to the end. The Army Chief of Staff, unwilling to see him sacrifice himself, arranges for people to find him on the front lines and bring him back home.
After the special team finds Fritz, Fritz is still unwilling to leave and leads the special team to hold the line on the front, creating a great victory.
The theme of this script is sacrifice and dedication.
The theme is rather old-fashioned and not profound enough, like a superhero movie.
Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" features a group of people and tells the story of Captain Miller, who receives orders during the Normandy landings to lead a squad behind enemy lines to find Private Ryan, a soldier who lost three brothers in a week.
This version mainly explores the brilliance and fragility of human nature, as well as the impact of war on individuals and families. It is an anti-war film.
In comparison, the latter version has a more profound theme and is significantly higher in artistic merit.
Link read the script twice repeatedly, thought for a while, and decided to take it down.
The original "Saving Private Ryan" was produced by DreamWorks Pictures, but the studio has not yet been established, and Spielberg probably hasn't received the script yet.
Link buys the rights in advance, writes it into a script, and will shoot this movie after he finishes shooting a few scripts in his hand.
In addition, "Saving Private Ryan" is also the cornerstone of DreamWorks. Without the success of this film, DreamWorks' development would be much slower, and Guess Pictures would have one less competitor, which is very beneficial.
The next day, at the company, Link first handed the "Runaway Bride" script to the production department for research, and at the same time asked the copyright department to acquire the adaptation rights to the "Saving Private Ryan" story, treating this movie as the company's key project.
In fact, after seeing "Saving Private Ryan," Link also considered shooting "Titanic" at the same time.
It's just that James Cameron said that he had been preparing for this film since 1992 and was preparing to start filming "Titanic" after "True Lies" was released.
It's too late to intercept it at this time.
"Link, the movie adaptation rights for 'Hachi: A Dog's Tale' have been acquired. When are you going to start this project?"
Daniel DeVito asked.
"How much money is still in the company's account?"
Last year, the company earned $620 million, with $500 million in dividends and $120 million left, plus $100 million in loans, totaling $220 million to produce and distribute movies.
Currently, the seven movies invested by the company are all small and medium-sized projects with low production costs.
"The Mask" has a budget of $20 million.
"Before Sunrise" $1.5 million.
"Sense and Sensibility" $16 million.
"The Butterfly Effect" $12 million, co-produced with Miramax.
"Good Will Hunting" $10 million.
"Rumble in the Bronx" $10.5 million, in cooperation with Golden Harvest.
"The Man from Earth", $20,000.
The total cost is about 70 million, leaving about 50 million in reserve funds, which can be used to invest in one or two more movies.
It's just that the production department is operating at full capacity due to too many projects produced by the company in the first half of the year, and there are no extra staff to produce other projects. The new movie project will have to wait until the second half of the year, after other movies are completed.
"Hachi: A Dog's Tale" is not in a hurry, it can be filmed next year. How is the casting for "The Butterfly Effect"?
Link asked.
"Not bad, the four main roles have been selected. Currently, we are selecting actors to play them at the ages of 7 and 13, which will probably take another week."
"Don't worry, take your time."
This movie is planned to be filmed after April, and there is more than a month to prepare.
On Friday, "Pulp Fiction" was released, and Link, Steven Soderbergh, and Robert Rodriguez also came to support Quentin at the premiere ceremony at the Hollywood Highland Theatre.
Quentin was very nervous before the movie was released. When he saw them, he didn't say any dirty jokes. He sat in the chair with a frown, like he was waiting for the nurse to give him an injection.
"Is it necessary to be so nervous? It's not like it's your first movie release."
Link said with a smile.
"I'm not nervous, it's just that it's too stuffy in the theater, I'm not feeling well."
Quentin took a deep breath.
"What are you going to do if the movie is a hit?"
Link said to help him relax.
"I'm going to have a three-day party and call a hundred beauties to my house to dance striptease."
"100 beauties? Remember to call me."
Robert Rodriguez next door said with drool.
"One hundred is too many, you need to buy a big villa first."
"Of course, if "Pulp Fiction" grosses more than $400 million worldwide, I will buy the largest villa in the Hollywood Hills. If it exceeds $500 million, I will buy the top floor of the tallest apartment in Manhattan. If it exceeds $600 million, I..."
"Wait! Are you crazy?"
Rodriguez interrupted him, "Don't you see what kind of movie this is? A black violent movie, a niche movie. You want this kind of movie to get 400 or 500 million at the box office?"
"Why not? "Paranormal Activity" and "The Blair Witch Project" are also niche movies, one with more than 600 million worldwide and the other with more than 300 million worldwide. Is "Pulp Fiction" worse than them? Absolutely not. Since these two movies can get so much at the box office, why can't "Pulp Fiction"?" Quentin said seriously.
"Link, what do you say?" Rodriguez asked.
Link smiled and said, "Pulp Fiction" is very well made and has the potential to be a hit. If we're lucky, it might sell 400 or 500 million at the box office."
Quentin nodded in agreement.
Clap clap clap!
The movie ended, and there was a burst of warm applause and cheers. Many people were applauding the movie, and the movie was indeed good, including the movie structure, plot design, lens processing, and the actors' performances, which were extremely high level.
This movie borrows a lot of old movie scenes. After "Pulp Fiction" became popular, the scenes in the film were borrowed by many movies.
Quentin also became a world-famous director and a representative figure in the independent film field with the popularity of the film.
However, it is a bit difficult for this movie to be a hit. First, Quentin doesn't have a system, and second, this movie is composed of three stories and adopts a non-linear narrative. There is no unified protagonist, which looks relatively obscure. Ordinary audiences don't understand it, and it seems like they haven't seen it after watching it.
Unlike "Paranormal Activity" and "The Blair Witch Project", which are simple and easy to understand, even illiterate people know that the movie is about a ghost story.
Clap clap clap clap!
The audience is still applauding.
"Link, have you ever heard such a long applause?"
Quentin shouted triumphantly.
"No!"
"Haha, I bet the box office of "Pulp Fiction" won't be worse than your movies."
"I hope you are right."
If this movie can get more than 600 million at the box office, Guess Pictures can also get more than 100 million. He is more looking forward to the movie being a hit than Quentin.
Amidst the applause of the audience, Quentin led the main creators to the front and accepted everyone's cheers. Quentin went on stage to give a speech, talking about some of the things that happened during the filming of the movie, and hoped that everyone would support the movie more.
"Link, congratulations on playing another good role."
Tim Robbins walked over clapping his hands.
"Are you talking about that perverted policeman?"
"Yes, I didn't expect you to be in this movie. You played it very well. If you weren't a director, you would be a good actor too."
"Thank you, that role was Quentin's prank. How is your new movie going? When will it be finished?"
Tim Robbins' new movie is "The Shawshank Redemption", which is scheduled to start filming at the beginning of the year. According to Morgan Freeman, after filming "Seven", he will go to the "The Shawshank Redemption" crew to film, with no time to rest in between.
"It's terrible. The director and the production team have serious differences in the plot arrangement, which led to the shutdown of the crew. It depends on the arrangement of the production team when it will start filming."
"I hope you finish filming soon."
After chatting for a few words, Link and Tim Robbins went to the front to congratulate the main creators of "Pulp Fiction", and Quentin gradually lost himself in the cheers.
In its opening weekend, "Pulp Fiction" grossed $9.33 million in 1,334 theaters, becoming the weekend box office champion.
