#259 - The Butterfly Effect
After watching "The Man from Earth", "The Butterfly Effect" was also completed and a preview was held in the screening room.
"The Butterfly Effect" and "The Man from Earth" were filmed at the same time, but "The Butterfly Effect" involved more special effects, and the production department had many films lined up for production, which led to it being completed more than two months after he finished filming.
Here, I must mention the structure of Guess Pictures.
After completing the mergers of Good Machine and TriStar Entertainment, the company's production and distribution capabilities have been significantly improved, but in terms of overall strength, it is still a medium-sized film production company, producing a maximum of 10 small and medium-sized film projects each year, which is far behind the seven major film companies that produce twenty or thirty films each year.
Link plans to acquire two more film production companies next year to increase Guess Pictures' production capacity, and also to find out about film box office subsidy situation faster.
The internal screening of "The Butterfly Effect" was not large-scale. Those invited to participate in the screening were mainly the main creative staff of "The Butterfly Effect" crew, the management of Guess Pictures' production and distribution departments, several executives from Harvey Weinstein and Miramax Films, as well as acquaintances such as Sofia, Quentin, Steven Soderbergh, and Richard Linklater.
The movie began to play.
At the beginning, a text appeared: Even a butterfly's wings can cause a hurricane thousands of miles away - Chaos Theory.
This theory was proposed by meteorologist Lorenz in 1963, referring to a butterfly in the rainforest of the Amazon River basin in South America, occasionally flapping its wings a few times, which may cause a tornado in Texas, USA two weeks later.
This theory is also the core of this movie, mainly about how subtle changes in life can have a great impact on oneself and the people around, like the second half of "Goodbye Mr. Loser".
This movie still uses a circular narrative structure, with the beginning and end of the movie connected.
The male protagonist, Evan, wearing a straitjacket from a mental hospital, sneaks into an office and hides under a desk, taking out a pen and writing:
"If... anyone sees this letter, it means my plan didn't work and I'm dead. If I can somehow go back to the beginning of it all, maybe I can... save her."
"Evan! Evan!"
"He should be here!"
Hospital staff came over and banged on the glass door.
The opening sets up suspense, and then the plot enters the main line, coming to Evan at the age of seven playing with a puppy on the lawn, his mother Andrea repairing the car in front of the door, and Evan asking about his father.
"This opening is a bit interesting."
Quentin said, stroking his big chin.
Sofia glanced at him, "Just a bit interesting? It's very interesting, okay? Before seeing this movie, did you know what the butterfly effect meant?"
"Of course I knew."
Quentin's tone was not very sure.
"You didn't go to college, where did you know it from?"
"Link didn't go to college either."
"Can you compare to Link? He's a great writer."
"Okay, you guys stop arguing and watch the movie seriously."
Link took Sofia's hand.
Sofia obediently closed her mouth.
Quentin glanced at the hands of the two, his mouth twitching a few times, secretly muttering 'dog couple'.
The movie continued to play, Evan was sent to school by his mother, and the teacher told his mother Andrea that Evan had drawn a very bloody and violent picture, but Evan didn't know when he drew it.
Andrea thought he was making excuses and took him to see a psychiatrist, hoping not to inherit his father's symptoms.
On the doctor's advice, Evan began to keep a diary, writing down everything to prevent amnesia afterwards.
This is the origin of those diaries.
The first entry was about Andrea taking him to play at the neighbors' Tommy and Kelly's house, and afterwards being taken to the basement by Kelly's father to be filmed, with partial memory loss afterwards.
The second entry was about Evan visiting his father Jason at the mental hospital, and almost being strangled to death by his father, with the process of talking with his father in the middle being forgotten.
The third entry was when he was 13 years old at the junkyard, Tommy went crazy and wanted to burn his puppy to death, and amnesia symptoms appeared again.
The fourth entry was the mailbox explosion incident. Evan only remembered putting the bomb in the neighbor's mailbox, and later forgot everything that happened.
After the mailbox explosion incident, Mrs. Andrea left town with Evan.
"Oh, I see, Evan inherited his father's mental illness. This disease causes amnesia, and the older he gets, the greater the impact. Next, Evan will meet a good doctor, and with the help of the doctor and his mother, Evan will gradually recover and get rid of the mental illness. So this movie is about psychological problems and family affection, right?"
Quentin said confidently.
"It shouldn't be that simple. The butterfly effect is that subtle changes cause great impact, and a child with mental illness is like a ticking time bomb, which will bring great changes to the lives of the people around him. This movie may be comparing two generations of mental patients to tell the audience a truth: the care of family and society will lead their lives in different directions. Maybe this is a movie that explores human nature and society, similar to 'Forrest Gump'."
Bald Steven Soderbergh said.
"I think... F*ck, time travel!"
Before Robert Rodriguez could express his opinion, he saw the male protagonist taking out his diary in the dormitory and starting his first time travel.
Evan's first time travel back to his encounter at the junkyard at the age of 13. When the little devil Tommy was about to burn the puppy to death, Evan asked the little fatty Lenny to save the puppy. The little devil threatened the fatty that if he dared to do that, he would kill his mother.
After Evan woke up, he went to see his childhood partner Fatty Lenny to ask about what happened that day to verify whether time travel was real or fake.
Fatty Lenny grew up to become an autistic patient and said that the devil threatened to kill his mother at the junkyard.
Evan then realized that time travel was real.
"Wow, this setting is so cool."
"Quentin, this setting is a thousand times, ten thousand times better than what you said."
"I understand, the male protagonist has the ability to travel through time and space. He uses this method to go back to his childhood to help the people around him and make everyone live a happy life. This is the meaning of the butterfly effect."
Seeing Evan travel to the past through his diary, many people exclaimed.
Although the concept of time travel appeared in movies in the 1970s, most of those movies traveled to the future, including "Back to the Future" and "Terminator", etc. No one has made a movie like this that travels to childhood through diaries, which seems very novel.
It's just that the subsequent plot development surprised everyone.
After the male protagonist Evan traveled to the past, he originally wanted to save the people around him by changing some things, but he found that in the course of repeated time travels, things became worse and worse, and someone around him would always be unlucky, and even he himself was affected, once being imprisoned and having someone pull strings for him, once having his limbs blown off.
After experiencing several time travels, Evan gradually collapsed and his spirit became disordered.
Evan realized at this time that his father Jason had once been like him, constantly traveling to the past, trying to change everything bad, but found that things were getting worse and worse, including Evan's mother having three miscarriages, also because his father kept traveling through time and space.
In the end, Evan was also locked in a mental hospital. In order to change the status quo, Evan ran to the doctor's office, hid under the table and wrote the opening passage 'If... anyone sees this letter'
After writing it, Evan opened the home video tape and played the video of his birth. Evan traveled back to his mother's womb again and strangled himself with the umbilical cord.
This scene is shown through the hospital's B-ultrasound screen. You can see the movements of the embryo Evan. The picture is quite terrifying and shocking.
"Wow ~"
"So that's how it is? Unbelievable."
"This setting is so cool."
When the movie was played to this scene, many people on the scene couldn't help but exclaim, with incredible expressions on their faces.
This scene is also like the scene at the "Seven" preview. Many people saw John Doe forcing Detective Mills to become 'anger' by killing Tracy, and many people also showed incredible expressions, with exclamations one after another.
Clap clap clap!
The movie ended and everyone on the scene stood up and applauded loudly, cheering.
Link smiled, also very satisfied with this movie, whether it is the camera design, or the actors' performance level, script design, or scene layout and lighting, etc., it is more than a notch above the original.
"Director Link, this movie is great, a hundred times more exciting than I expected."
Leonardo excitedly clapped his hands hard.
When filming this movie, because it was filmed in chronological order, he didn't quite understand the overall structure of this movie, and couldn't imagine what this movie would be like.
After watching the movie, he was very shocked. This movie is so wonderful. He is sincerely excited to be the protagonist in such a movie.
"Leo, your performance is also great."
Link smiled.
"Link, this movie is so wonderful, congratulations on making another good movie."
Steven Soderbergh, Richard Linklater and others also came forward to congratulate him.
"Thank you!"
"Link, you are great, this movie is amazing."
The heroine Renée Zellweger excitedly threw herself into his arms, and when she looked up at him, her eyes were full of admiration and agitation for him.
Julianne Moore also congratulated him with a smile.
"Your performances are also great."
Link smiled with Renée Zellweger and Julianne Moore in his arms.
Sofia curled her lips and turned to look at Quentin, "How about it, is the subsequent plot of "The Butterfly Effect" more exciting than you guessed? Are you very admiring Link now?"
"So so, compared to that, I prefer 'Seven'."
Quentin said expressionlessly.
"That's just jealousy."
Sofia teased.
Quentin wanted to say no, but seeing several beauties surrounding Link, he bit his back molars and was still very disappointingly jealous.
