#57 - Scream
When Quentin Tarantino screamed in fright, many in the audience reacted as well.
Female producers were very direct, shielding their eyes with their hands, only glancing at the screen. When the door was pulled slightly, they quickly lowered their heads, refusing to watch.
Among the male audience, besides Quentin's scream, most frowned or slightly tilted their heads.
The bolder ones crossed their arms, watching the screen nonchalantly. When they heard Quentin scream, they glanced over, their faces bearing mocking or smug smiles.
And their reactions, especially Quentin's, were precisely captured by cameras placed on both sides.
The photographers were employees of Guessing Game Pictures, and filming the audience's reactions was a task assigned by Link.
Link planned to promote "Paranormal Activity" without spending money on television trailers. Instead, he would show footage of the audience being scared while watching the movie.
If viewers wanted to know how scary the movie was,
they wouldn't need to read reviews or watch trailers.
They could simply watch the audience's real reactions to get the answer.
Others, after seeing these clips, would also be attracted, become curious about the film, and thus develop a desire to see it.
This was also one of the publicity plans Link had devised.
"Ah, Micah! Come here quickly, come here quickly."
In the soundtrack, the female lead, Katie, suddenly cried out.
"Ghosts? Ghosts in the daytime? No big deal, I'm not scared at all."
Quentin leaned back in his seat, half-closing his eyes and staring at the screen.
The male lead, carrying a camera, hurried into the bathroom, only to find a spider.
"Cheap trick. Such a small trick can scare me."
Quentin curled his lips in disdain.
"Don't you feel the terrifying atmosphere in the room is getting stronger? Link was very good at creating atmosphere when filming 'Buried.' This movie is even better. No blood, no scary props, no scary music, just relying on the camera to create the tension. Very impressive,"
Steven Soderbergh said.
"It's very impressive. Previous horror movies relied on makeup and music to build tension. Link's isn't like that. The picture is very clean, like our everyday lives. It's simple to film. If this movie does well at the box office, many people will definitely follow suit in the future,"
Lawrence Bender said.
"You're praising it too early. It's only been twenty minutes. Who knows what will happen later? Many horror movies start well but end terribly. I hope Link doesn't do that."
"Quiet, the ghost is coming."
On the thirteenth night, the male and female leads continued to sleep in bed.
Around two in the morning, the hollow thumping sound rang out again outside the door.
Quentin frowned, using a bit of peripheral vision to watch the screen. He didn't stare at the dark doorway, but at the male and female leads in bed, which lessened the sense of horror.
The female lead heard the strange noise, woke up, and stared at the door. Then the male lead also woke up, and the two hugged each other, constantly looking towards the door.
Seeing the male and female leads wake up, the audience also breathed a sigh of relief.
Roar!
Thump!
Suddenly, a roar came from outside the open door, followed by something heavy hitting the ground.
The male and female leads screamed in fright.
"Ah!!!"
Several screams also came from the audience.
"Is there something wrong with this movie?"
In the third row of the audience, Jerome Preston scratched his thick hair, slightly tilting his head, not daring to continue staring at the open door on the screen.
"What's wrong?"
Film critic Will Rogers asked.
"The picture is clearly very ordinary, something we see every day. Why is it so terrifying on the screen, making people feel uneasy?"
Jerome Preston frowned and asked.
"That's Link's cleverness. When filming, the camera points directly at the open door, while normal people are used to closing the door tightly before sleeping, even locking it. Not closing the door might make it hard to sleep.
Now, seeing the male and female leads sleeping without closing the door, we subconsciously feel uneasy for them, like an obsessive-compulsive disorder patient seeing messy books. This psychological effect is unavoidable.
Link makes good use of this in the movie, especially since he uses a live-action style. This effect is doubled, and the feeling of unease is also doubled.
Regardless of the camera work, this setting is very clever, very novel. Link is indeed a director who is good at innovation and very creative,"
Will Rogers said seriously.
On the 15th night, after one in the morning, the female lead suddenly got out of bed and stood by the bed, staring at the male lead in bed.
"Sleepwalking! It's sleepwalking. I've sleepwalked before, and I don't remember anything after waking up,"
A female producer covered her mouth and exclaimed.
"Katie should be possessed by an evil spirit,"
Someone said uneasily.
"What is she going to do?"
"Oh my god, is this what it's like when you sleepwalk?"
Uncorrected sentence.
"Too scary."
After standing by the bed for more than two hours, the female lead turned and walked out of the bedroom.
The male lead woke up, went downstairs to find the female lead, returned to the house to get a blanket, and suddenly heard a muffled sound from the second floor.
The male lead was startled, grabbed the camera, and rushed upstairs, only to see the television turned on.
The screen was full of black and white static, crackling.
The male lead mustered his courage, pointed the camera at the bedroom, searched everywhere, but found nothing.
As the camera panned behind him, he saw the female lead standing in the doorway with disheveled hair.
"Ah!!"
A burst of screams came from the theater at the same time.
"Shit! I've had enough."
One female producer stood up and walked out. When she reached the dimly lit aisle, she stopped and saw others leaving as well, so they walked out of the screening room together.
This time, 5 people left.
53 people remained.
"Boss, I told you, this movie of yours is too scary. Showing it in theaters will scare the audience. Was my guess accurate?"
Liu Xiaoli tugged at his clothes and asked.
"Accurate. Those who left were producers from Disney Pictures. Walt Disney's films mainly consist of animated movies and family-friendly movies, so it's normal that they wouldn't want this movie."
"What if everyone gets scared away?"
"That's even better. It shows that my movie has an extremely strong horror effect, and the box office will be very good after its release."
"You're always so optimistic."
Liu Xiaoli reached out and brushed his clothes, smoothing out the wrinkles, standing behind him, not even looking at the screen to avoid being scared.
Ah!
"Shit! What the hell is that?"
"Damn it, you scared me."
Suddenly, a burst of exclamations erupted in the theater, and more than a dozen people suddenly stood up, including Quentin and Jerome Preston.
"Richard, how are you? Is your heart feeling uncomfortable? Do you want to take a nitroglycerin pill?"
In the front row of the audience, Scott Rudin noticed Richard Zanuck clutching his chest.
"I'm fine, this little scene can't scare me."
Richard Zanuck waved his hand, slowly exhaling.
"Don't force yourself. It wouldn't be good if something happened."
"Stop talking, watch the movie."
