Hollywood starts with a broker
#12 - Don’t ask for too much
Burbank, Disney Studios.
Since Disney was on the verge of bankruptcy a few years ago, with the support of Roy Disney, Walt Disney's nephew, and the major shareholder Sid Bass, Michael Eisner, former executive of Paramount, and Jeffrey Katzenberg were hired from outside. Disney then began its revival and leaped to become one of the six major Hollywood studios!
Touchstone Pictures, mainly created by Michael Ovitz, is a production studio brand specializing in developing adult works;
Disney is no longer just developing children's and animated films.
Now, Disney has created another live-action film brand, Hollywood Pictures, to form internal competition with Touchstone;
Domestic distribution is under the name of Disney Pictures, while international distribution is handled by Buena Vista International!
Jeffrey Katzenberg currently serves as the Chairman of Disney Film, responsible for the production affairs of Disney animation and live-action films.
The director of "Pretty Woman", Garry Marshall, producer Steven Reuther, and screenwriter J.F. Lawton are all clients of CAA!
In the corridor, Aaron was talking to Gary Goldstein, Disney's executive producer, "Are the actors still considering it?"
"Yes, for the male lead, Garry is optimistic about Christopher Reeve. For the female lead, we have also sent invitations to Karen Allen and Molly Ringwald;"
"So far, we haven't received any replies!"
Listening to Gary Goldstein's words, Aaron really felt that he had no say at all, because he had no power to speak;
He was just discussing script revisions with screenwriter J.F. Lawton.
Needless to say, Christopher Reeve is the male lead of the four "Superman" series. As for Karen Allen and Molly Ringwald, they are also experienced actresses;
And they are all affordable artists. The box office failure of "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" released the year before last gave Christopher Reeve a big blow.
Aaron shook his head, "If there's no news, it's probably because they don't want to play such a role!"
"Pretty Woman" is originally a low-budget romantic comedy, and the story is quite naive for many male stars;
If they could invite Tom Cruise, Disney would certainly be willing to increase the budget, but this kind of script would be rejected before it even reached Tom Cruise's hands.
"Next, we will continue to send out invitations. If that doesn't work, we will select some young actresses from the newcomers!"
Hearing Gary Goldstein's words, Aaron certainly understood that Touchstone's current target is definitely those actresses with certain experience;
If there are no suitable ones, they will look for one among the new young actresses.
Nicole Kidman will have to compete with other batches of new actresses at that time. With Aaron Anderson's current situation, of course, he can't decide to let the production company choose her as the female lead;
After all, Aaron only accelerated the progress of "Pretty Woman". Producer Steven Reuther and project leader Jeffrey Katzenberg are indeed developing this script!
Afterwards, Aaron said a few more words to screenwriter J.F. Lawton and left. There are basically no problems with the movie script now;
As an agent, there is no need for Aaron to stay here and waste time.
In early April, "Dead Calm" starring Nicole Kidman began to be released. It is a low-budget thriller, but Nicole Kidman's performance in it is considered qualified!
At the same time, Quentin Tarantino also sent Aaron a script, "True Romance";
Aaron also took the opportunity to sign Quentin Tarantino for the screenwriting and directing agency contract.
"A strong postmodern black humor style!"
After Aaron got the first draft of the script, he definitely finished reading it with patience. The handwriting was scribbled, not to mention the grammatical errors in the sentences;
It would be good if Quentin Tarantino could spell some words correctly.
However, Aaron really can't have too high expectations for Quentin Tarantino, who didn't even graduate from middle school!
"I'll find someone to proofread it first, and then help you promote it to Hollywood directors and producers," Aaron said to Quentin Tarantino on the phone.
"Thank you, Aaron!"
After returning to CAA, Aaron found a typist from the editorial department to proofread it.
After the female employee of the editorial department flipped through the manuscript, she widened her eyes in surprise, "I just flipped through a few pages at random, and on each page, I can find at least nine grammatical errors."
"Uh, that's okay. This client's cultural level is a bit low. You can spend more time proofreading it," Aaron was also helpless. This script is not directed by Quentin Tarantino himself, otherwise there would be no need to proofread it.
After finishing the script, Aaron received a call from Miramax again, asking him to go to their company to discuss Steven Soderbergh's plan to go to Cannes!
Afterwards, Aaron drove his Chevrolet to Miramax's office in Los Angeles, and specially made a phone call to Steven Soderbergh.
"Steven, where are you?"
"Vacationing in Florida, do you want to come over?"
"Oh, no, I'm just informing you that I'll probably go to Cannes at the end of the month. Now I'm going to Miramax to discuss the plan for the trip to Cannes!"
"The end of the month? Okay, I'll arrange my schedule..."
After hanging up the phone, Aaron breathed a sigh of relief. He was busy, but Steven Soderbergh actually ran to Florida for vacation!
Miramax is also a small distributor now. They are going to Cannes to buy new films to bring back to the country for release;
Miramax also has high expectations for "Sex, Lies, and Videotape".
"Harvey, I heard that you guys were quite satisfied with "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" at the internal screening?"
One wrong, one first, one hair, one inside, one capacity, one in, one look, one look!
Aaron chatted with the other party in his office.
"$1.2 million, plus various publicity and distribution costs. The investment in this movie may exceed $3 million," Harvey Weinstein looked at Aaron,
"I hope my vision and yours are right!"
Aaron smiled, "If this movie was my own, I wouldn't sell it at this price at all;"
"You should have confidence in the Cannes Film Festival. When "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" is full of honors, you will know how wise the decision was at that time!"
"Okay, remember to remind Steven Soderbergh to cooperate with us when he goes to Cannes," Harvey Weinstein emphasized.
"Don't worry, newcomers are very eager for platforms!"
After leaving Miramax, Aaron received a call from Nicole Kidman again, "A director said he wants me to go to the Culver Hotel tonight to talk about a script..."
