#51 - A bit difficult to talk about
March not only features the Academy Awards ceremony but also NCAA's "March Madness"!
Unfortunately, these aren't things Aaron cares about because "Phone Booth" is being released in mid-March!
Perhaps due to less competition and a positive outlook for "Phone Booth," 20th Century Fox scheduled it to open in 650 theaters!
In its opening weekend, it grossed $7.1 million, coupled with favorable reviews, "Phone Booth" can be considered a success.
After all, the production cost of "Phone Booth" was only $1.6 million.
Century City, Fox Plaza Building.
The office of Joe Roth, President of 20th Century Fox Film.
Joe Roth looked at Aaron Anderson sitting across from him, then at a script on the table, "Ghost."
"A romance between a human and a ghost, Aaron, is there a market for this kind of thing?"
"Moreover, a $22 million production budget for a romance film isn't low!"
Aaron nodded, "I know, the film will use some special effects, so it's a bit expensive. Plus, Edward Zwick is the director, and Kevin Costner is the lead actor. I'm very confident!"
"20th Century Fox will invest $11 million for a 50% stake. In the North American market, if the box office is below $50 million, the distribution commission is 15%;"
"Above $50 million but below $100 million, the distribution commission is 13%. Above $100 million, it's 10%!"
Joe Roth tapped the table, investing $11 million for a 50% stake in the film, "20th Century Fox needs a guarantee. Our investment needs to be prioritized in the return hierarchy;"
"Moreover, the distribution commission for the North American market will be charged at 15%, and for the international market, it's 30%, or you can sell it outright!"
This means that regardless of the box office performance of "Ghost," 20th Century Fox will first recover its production and distribution costs, including the $11 million production cost.
In the international market, according to international practice, the production company, distributor, and theaters split the revenue at 35%, 17%, and 48% respectively. 20th Century Fox, by handling distribution themselves, adds another 13% distribution commission!
Although, according to convention, finding an international agent would only cost a 10% commission, but since it's 20th Century Fox, it saves Aaron a lot of trouble, which Aaron can accept.
In the future, once his reputation grows, the distribution commission, both domestically and internationally, can be reduced to 8% to 10%.
What Aaron can't accept is the North American market. In the international market, a 20% to 25% share for the production company is acceptable, after all, Dawn is a startup company.
But North America, being the main market, has a higher share for the production company. Does 20th Century Fox not want to take any risks?
Fortunately, 20th Century Fox isn't providing the full production funding!
"Mr. Roth, you know that if I pre-sell the international distribution rights, I'm confident I can raise over $10 million," Aaron said, explaining why he's reluctant. "Because the box office potential of 'Ghost' is too high, it would be a loss."
Like "Dances with Wolves," Kevin Costner exchanged international distribution rights with Orion Pictures for part of the production funding, leading to future regret when seeing the international box office numbers.
Aaron has the track record of "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" and "Cinema Paradiso." Someone will be interested in the overseas distribution rights of "Ghost!"
Joe Roth smiled, "'Phone Booth' can indeed create a lot of value for you, but 'Ghost' is different. The cost of this film is 10 times that of 'Phone Booth';"
"More importantly, it's a fantasy romance, you need the distributor to provide you with funding!"
Aaron thought for a moment, "I'll consider it."
"Pretty Woman" is being released next week, and New Line Cinema's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is also coming out early next month. When the box office numbers for these two films are out, Aaron doesn't believe other companies won't be interested in "Ghost"?
Let's consider it after getting the profits from "Phone Booth"…
Mid to late March is also when American college students have their spring break, and the beaches of Los Angeles are filled with students letting loose.
Jennifer Connelly also came to Santa Monica Beach in Los Angeles from Northern California!
Aaron, with his arm around the sexy Jennifer Connelly, lay on the beach, with a sea of white flesh in sight.
Tens of thousands of college students indulged on the long beach, with beer, champagne, rock music, beach volleyball, and music stages.
"American college students are really…" Aaron, behind his sunglasses, was genuinely shocked, after all, last year, he was just a struggling nobody and didn't experience this firsthand.
"After a winter of studying, this week is their time to have fun!"
Jennifer Connelly, wearing a sexy bikini, kissed Aaron.
After taxes and expenses, Aaron still has almost $600,000 in cash in his account, which is enough to have fun, but Aaron's ambition lies elsewhere.
Although 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and Sony's Columbia and TriStar have all expressed some interest in "Ghost," the terms are not easy to negotiate.
If they are to provide production funding, the conditions are quite harsh, unless Dawn finances it themselves and entrusts them with distribution!
Currently, these major distributors release nearly 30 films each year. They produce and invest in a minority of them, and the majority are invested and produced by other production companies, which they then distribute.
It's not easy to get funding from these distributors.
No mistake, one song, one hair, one inside, one appearance, one in one look!
"By the way, Aaron, 'Phone Booth' now has a box office of $12 million, shouldn't you be happy?"
"Phone Booth" has only been released for 10 days, and this result is very successful. The number of theaters showing it has now exceeded 1,100!
"Happy, why wouldn't I be happy? Let's go, let's go to the bar for a drink," Aaron put his arm around Jennifer Connelly's shoulders and stood up.
Jennifer Connelly wrapped her arms around Aaron's waist, "The Oscars are about to be held, Hollywood's liveliest time is coming."
"Alright, there will be opportunities in the future. Tonight is the premiere of that 'Pretty Woman' movie, come with me to see it!"
After all, this movie is related to his reputation.
Warren Beatty, that old rascal, seems to have emerged from the scandal. Hollywood's openness to these scandalous news is too high.
And Isabelle Adjani was also nominated for this year's Oscar for Best Actress for "Camille Claudel!"
"It's about to be released, this movie has been praised by you."
Jennifer Connelly hasn't dropped out of Stanford University, so she pays less attention to Hollywood.
Especially after Aaron Anderson left CAA, she doesn't have a professional agent anymore. The one-year contract will expire soon, and she doesn't plan to renew it!
