Hollywood starts with a broker
#95 - PolyGram's ambition
With the 48th Golden Globe Awards held, Orion Pictures' "Dances with Wolves" was the biggest winner. Kevin Costner won Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director for his directorial debut.
It should be noted that Kevin Costner's competitors were not weak at all, including Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" and Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather Part III."
"Orion can survive for a while longer," Aaron murmured, leaning back on the sofa in his West Hollywood apartment.
Currently, "Dances with Wolves" has grossed over $90 million at the North American box office and was the biggest winner at the Golden Globes. The upcoming Oscars should not be underestimated either.
"Kathy Bates also won Best Actress – Drama for "Misery"!"
Nicole Kidman walked over and handed Aaron a glass of champagne.
Aaron took it and took a sip. "Is there something to celebrate?"
Just a few days ago, the multinational forces led by the United States officially invaded Iraq!
Nicole Kidman smiled. "Well, aren't Kevin Costner and Kathy Bates both major characters in "Ghost"?"
Aaron nodded. Indeed, the more successful Kevin Costner is now, the more it will help "Ghost," which is scheduled to be released in the summer.
"Weren't you supposed to audition for Tom Cruise's "Far and Away"?"
Aaron asked.
Nicole Kidman shook her head. "The female lead isn't decided by the director and producers; Tom Cruise decides it."
"My agent said I didn't even make it to the final round of auditions!"
"Is it because of your height?"
Nicole Kidman nodded, everything was implied.
"Alright, it's just a vase role anyway. Vases aren't noticeable in Tom Cruise's works. Who remembers the female leads in "Days of Thunder" and "Rain Man"?"
Aaron shook his head. "After "Ghost" is released this year, you won't lack scripts."
"Even if you can't compare to Julia Roberts, it will be enough to make you famous overnight!"
Julia Roberts also won Best Actress – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes for "Pretty Woman."
As for scripts, she's receiving them non-stop.
"By the way, have you been paying attention to the Sundance Film Festival that just closed?"
Nicole Kidman sat in the man's lap and asked affectionately.
"Not much attention. There aren't any new directors worth cultivating!"
Now that Dawn Films is just starting out, it will definitely need to cooperate with some new directors, and the Sundance Film Festival is a good way to discover them.
"What about "Poison," which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival? It has a high artistic component!"
Aaron pondered, caressing the thighs of the woman in his arms. "Just artistic, not much commercial appeal. It's just a controversial New Queer Cinema film."
"Poison" is similar to "My Own Private Idaho," but it doesn't have any stars, and the scale exceeds R-rated.
"Poison" is truly a pure independent film, mainly telling three male sexual stories:
The first story is presented in a documentary style, about a boy who likes masochism. When he sees his mother being beaten by his father, he shoots his father to death and then runs away and disappears.
The second story is about a scientist who extracts a liquid, but accidentally drinks it himself. As a result, his skin begins to rot, and the rot gradually spreads to those who have been in contact with him. Although his female assistant stays with him, she also dies from the infection, and finally, the scientist dies after his entire body rots.
The third story is about a prisoner who is a homosexual. He often recalls scenes of men being abused that he saw in his previous life, and after contacting a prisoner a few times, he sexually assaults him!
All three stories are related to sex: the boy's masochism is related to sex, the liquid extracted by the scientist is also related to sex, and the prisoner is a homosexual.
The theme of the film is somewhat vague, but it can be seen that the director wants to express that the "poison" is sex.
"At most, it can only be released in a limited way. Of course, I'm not interested!"
NC-17 rated works, this kind of art is not what Aaron needs.
Moreover, Quentin Tarantino is currently preparing "Reservoir Dogs." Dawn Films has already worked with new directors David Fincher and John Singleton.
There's really no need to find a new director to make a film.
"Ghost" director Edward Zwick and "The Silence of the Lambs" director Jonathan Demme are also valued by Aaron!
After the Golden Globe Awards, "Dances with Wolves" also shined at the Directors Guild and Producers Guild Awards, as well as the American film critics awards.
Currently, the National Society of Film Critics, the National Board of Review, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Circle, and the Boston Society of Film Critics are collectively known as the five major American film critics associations.
In addition to the Golden Globe Awards, the British Academy Awards, and the two major guild awards, they are all important indicators of the Oscars!
In the evening, at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in West Hollywood, PolyGram held a party because PolyGram officially established an office in Los Angeles to develop Hollywood movies.
"Congratulations, Michael," PolyGram's move indicates that it will independently develop American films.
Michael Kuhn smiled. "PolyGram has participated in several Hollywood movies. Now it's just getting on the right track."
"Wild at Heart," "Barton Fink," and "My Own Private Idaho" all have PolyGram's investment.
"Let me introduce someone to you!"
With that, Michael Kuhn introduced Paul Webster, the head of PolyGram USA, to Aaron Anderson.
"Mr. Anderson, good evening!"
Paul Webster raised his glass and clinked it with Aaron.
Aaron nodded slightly and smiled: "Just call me Aaron. Dawn and PolyGram have cooperation, and everyone can continue to cooperate in the future."
Afterwards, Aaron also learned that Paul Webster was already preparing a directorial debut written and directed by Tim Robbins, "Bob Roberts," which will be distributed by Paramount.
Although "Bob Roberts" is just a low-budget political comedy, it also marks PolyGram's official start in the American independent film business.
Watching the two leave, Aaron drank the wine in his glass in one gulp and muttered to himself, "It seems that PolyGram really wants to make a breakthrough in the film business?"
Currently, foreign film companies mainly participate in the investment part. In terms of production, they mainly rely on American domestic film companies!
Aaron shook his head. Hollywood is never afraid of competition. There are already countless domestic film companies with great competition.
As for foreign companies, the difficulties they face are even greater.
