Chapter 782 Attack
Harry had no idea how long he had been sitting on the swing until a sound interrupted his contemplation.
He looked up and looked around. Streetlights in the surrounding road cast a foggy light, illuminating the silhouettes of a group of people walking through the park.
One of them was singing an ugly song loudly, and the others were laughing. The expensive racing car they were gliding made a soft sound.
Harry knew who those people were. The man up front was without a doubt his cousin, Dudley Dursley, coming home with his loyal gang.
Dudley was as fat as ever, but a year of hard dieting and a new approach had made a huge difference to his physique. As Uncle Vernon gleefully told those who would listen, Dudley had recently become the heavyweight champion of the Southeast Regional Intercollegiate Boxing Championship. Uncle Vernon called it an aristocratic sport, and it made Harry think Dudley looked scarier than when he'd used Harry as a boxing lob at his old school.
It wasn't that Harry was afraid of Dudley, he just felt that Dudley had worked so hard to learn boxing not out of celebration or praise.
The children around were more afraid of Dudley - than they were of Potter - whom they had been sternly warned about, a boy sent to the Santa Bruce Security Center School for Delinquents.
Watching the dark figures across the lawn, Harry wondered who they were teaching tonight?
Look around, Harry thought to himself, come on, look around, I'm sitting here, try hitting me...
But they didn't turn around, they didn't see him, they were almost at the railing. Harry fought back the idea of calling them, it would not be a wise move, he couldn't use magic, and he would be in danger of being expelled again.
The voices of Dudley's gang disappeared, and they, walking towards Magnolia Street, disappeared from sight.
Are you satisfied, Sirius, Harry thought dully, not acting rashly, just staying obediently, the opposite of what Sirius used to do.
Harry stood up and stretched.
Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon thought it was fine for Dudley to come home anytime, but it was always too late after he got home. Uncle Vernon threatened to lock Harry up in the shed if he came home later than Dudley, so, yawning sullenly, still feeling sullen, Harry made his way to the park gate.
Magnolia Drive, like Privet Drive, is full of big, square houses with neatly manicured lawns, all owned by a tall, long, square man who drives a car like A clean car like Uncle Vernon's.
Harry preferred evenings on Little Wai King Road, when the curtained windows gleamed jewel-like in the dark, and there were no mutterings of disapproval as he passed dwellings that he had broken in. .
He was walking so fast that he saw Dudley and his gang again halfway along Magnolia Road, saying goodbye to each other at the entrance of Magnolia Crescent.
Harry stepped into the shadow of a lilac tree and waited.
—he quacks like a pig, doesn't he? said Malcolm, making the others laugh.
It's an excellent hook, Peel said.
How about this time tomorrow night? said Dudley.
Come to my house, my parents are out, Gordon said.
See you then! said Dudley.
Goodbye, Dudley!
Goodbye, boss!
Harry waited until everyone else had left before coming out. When their voices faded again, he walked towards the corner, walked quickly, and soon came to a place very close to Dudley... Dudley was humming an out-of-key song leisurely and contentedly. It's ugly enough, doesn't he know he's tone deaf?
Hey, boss!
Dudley turned around.
Oh, it's you! Dudley grunted.
How long have you been boss? Harry asked.
Shut up! growled Dudley, walking away.
What a cool name! said Harry, grinning as he walked behind his cousin. You'll always be 'Dudley the Heart' to me.
I told you, shut up! said Dudley, his ham-like hands clenched into fists. Do those people know what your mother called you?
shameless!
You're not going to say she's shameless, are you? So can I call you 'Dudley the Sweetheart' or 'Little Dudley'?
Dudley didn't say anything, and it seemed like it would take him all the time to keep from punching Harry.
So who were you hitting tonight? Harry asked, his smile fading. Another kid, how old is it? You beat Mark Ivan two days ago.
He deserves it! growled Dudley.
Yeah?
He insulted me!
Really? Did he mean that you are like a pig taught to walk on its hind legs? That's not an insult, Dudley, that's the truth! Harry said helplessly. his.
A muscle in Dudley's jaw was twitching, which pleased Harry - he knew it pissed Dudley off. He felt like it was sending the frustration all over him through a straw to his cousin. There it was—it was his only outlet.
They turned right onto the narrow lane where Harry first met Sirius, a short-cut intersection of Magnolia Moon Street and Wisteria Road.
It was empty and darker than the road he connected to because there were no street lights.
Their footsteps sounded dull against the garage on one side and the fence on the other.
Think of yourself as a strong man who can hide everything, don't you? Dudley said after a few seconds.
What's up?
The thing you're trying to hide.
Harry laughed again.
It's not as stupid as you look, is it, Dudley? But I guess you can't walk and talk at the same time? He drew his wand and saw Dudley looking sideways.
You can't! said Dudley quickly. I know the rules, and you'll be kicked out of that weird school if you do!
How do you know they haven't changed the regulations, boss?
They didn't! said Dudley, though he didn't sound sure. Harry smiled slightly.
You can't knock me out without that thing, can you? Dudley snarled. So you need four guys behind you so you can knock out a kid? You know what your boxing title is What? How old is your opponent? 7? 8?
I knocked him out for 20 minutes before he woke up. He weighs two of you! You wait for me to tell Dad to get that thing out—
Going to Dad again? Is his darling boxing champion afraid of Harry's dirty little wand?
Not so brave at night? Dudley sneered.
This is night, Dudley darling, and this is what we call night.
I mean while you're sleeping! growled Dudley. He stopped, and so did Harry, looking at his cousin.
He saw a strange expression of triumph on Dudley's blurred face.
What do you mean? Am I not brave enough in my sleep? said Harry.
What do you think I'm afraid of? A pillow or something?
I heard it last night, said Dudley breathlessly, you're talking in your sleep, stop moaning.
What do you mean? Harry said again, but a cold sensation jumped into his stomach. He dreamed of the cemetery again last night.
Dudley let out a harsh laugh, then put on a high-pitched whimper, Don't kill Cedric! Don't take him! Who's Cedric? Your boyfriend?
I - you lied! Harry said mechanically but his mouth was dry, he knew Dudley wasn't lying, had he heard anything else about Cedric?
Dad, save me! Dad! He's going to kill me! Woo~~woo~~ Shut up! Harry said calmly, Shut up! Dudley! I'm warning you!
Come and save me! Daddy! Come and save me! Mom! That man took Cedric away! Daddy! Save me! He—you mean me? Dudley leaned against the wall of the alley. superior.
Harry pointed his wand straight at Dudley's heart. Harry could feel fifteen years of hatred for Dudley hitting every inch of him - why didn't he give Dudley a hit now? To make Dudley crawl home like a bug? Make him unable to speak and grow insect tentacles?
Don't talk about that again! Harry yelled, You understand?
Point that thing at something else!
I said, do you understand?
Point to something else!
Do you understand it?
Get that thing off of me— Dudley said breathlessly in a strangely trembling voice, as if he'd been submerged in icy water. There seemed to be something wrong with the night sky, the stars that covered the indigo sky were suddenly painted black and lost their light-the stars, the moon, the dim street lights on both sides at the end of the alley disappeared, the rumble of cars and the whisper of trees disappeared up.
The balmy night suddenly turned to a stinging cold. They were completely surrounded by an impenetrable, silent darkness, as if a huge hand had completely covered the whole alley with a thick cloak.
For a split second, Harry thought he had inadvertently performed some magic again, despite his best efforts to restrain himself. Then he realized he was wrong, that he didn't have the power to extinguish the stars, and he turned his head this way down the road, then the other, trying to see something, but the darkness seemed to cast a thin veil over his eyes.
Dudley's horrified voice reached Harry's ears, What - what are you doing? Stop - stop!
I didn't do anything! Shut up! Don't move!
I can't see anything! I'm blind! I—
I said shut up! Harry stood still, turning his blind eyes to the left and then to the right. The cold was so strong that his whole body was shaking, goose bumps appeared on his arms, and the hair on the back of his neck stood up, he opened his eyes wide open, looked around blankly, but saw nothing. It couldn't be—they couldn't be here—it couldn't be on Xiaoweijin Road, he listened nervously, he could hear them before he saw them...
I - I'm going to tell Dad - Dudley whimpered, Where are you? What are you doing -
Can't you shut up? Harry hissed, I'm trying to hear—
But suddenly he was silent, and he heard what he was most worried about. There was something in the alley that didn't belong there, something was taking long, hoarse, rattling breaths, and Harry felt himself shake with fear, as if he were standing in the cold air. like trembling.
Stop-stop! Stop!! I'll hit you! I swear I will!
Dudley, shut up...
pong!
A fist landed on Harry's head, knocking him off his feet. There are stars in his eyes.
For the second time in an hour Harry felt his head being split in two, and in the next second he felt himself hit the ground and his wand out of his hand.
You idiot! Dudley! Harry cried, his eyes filling with pain as he crawled on the ground on his hands and knees. He heard Dudley run clumsily away, knock over the fence in the alley, and fall.
Dudley! Come back! You're running to that thing! A terrified scream, and Harry stopped in his tracks. At the same time, Harry felt the cold creep up his back, which could only prove one thing, not one.
Dudley! Shut your mouth! Whatever you do! Shut your mouth! Wand! Harry grunted frantically, his hand slithering across the ground like a spider. Where is it? Come on - Lumos!
He spoke the spell mechanically, desperate to light up what he was looking for, and - to his amazement, the wand glowed inches from his right hand - the tip of the wand lit up.
Harry snatched it up and staggered to his feet, looking around.
His stomach twisted. A towering, hooded thing was gliding toward him, hovering on the ground with no face or feet under the robes, sucking hungrily in the night as it came. Stumbling back, Harry raised his wand.
Call God to protect you!
A small wisp of silvery gas shot out from the end of the wand. The Dementor slowed, but the spell didn't quite work.
Stumbling, he backed away as the dementor approached him, fear filling his brain - focus! — a pair of grey, sticky, pimple-ridden hands reached out from under the dementor's robes, trying to reach him and a rush of sound filled Harry's ears.
Call God to protect! His voice sounded weak and distant, and another little wisp of silvery smoke - fainter than before - drifted from the wand, - he couldn't do it, he couldn't make the spell work. There was a laugh in his head, a sharp, cold laugh, and he could smell the putrid, death-cold breath of the dementors filling his lungs, almost drowning him—think— Joyful things--but there was no joy in his head, the dementor's cold fingers had tightened around his throat, the shrill sneer was getting louder, and a voice in his head was saying, To death Bow down, Harry - maybe there's no pain at all... - I don't know... - I've never died...
He can no longer see his friends! Their faces suddenly appeared in his mind, and he struggled to breathe, Call for protection!!
A gigantic stag silver erupted from the port of his wand, its antlers thrusting toward the dementor's heart. The dementor was thrown backwards, drifting away like darkness, when the stag struck again , the Dementor was repulsed, fell down, and fled like a bat.
This way! Harry called to the stag, running down the alley and holding his lighted wand aloft, Dudley? Dudley? He ran about a dozen paces to find them: Dudley bent and fell On the ground, his hands covered his face. The second Dementor bent down, grabbed Dudley's wrists in his sticky hands, and pulled them away affectionately, lowering his hooded face directly to Dudley, as if about to kiss. He does.
Grab it! Harry bellowed, and with a quick growl the silver stag he'd summoned darted past him, antlers catching just an inch from the dementor's eyeless face. After hitting it, the monster was thrust into the air, and then, like his companions, he flew away and disappeared from the night sky; the stag ran slowly to the end of the path, and disappeared in silvery smoke.
