Chapter 807 Hearing (3)

Harry was out of breath now; he had to help himself now.

He had entered a dungeon that was almost as terrifying as this one. Harry hadn't seen it here before. Haven't been here either.

However, he and Fan Lin once visited here in Dumbledore's memory basin, where he saw Barty Crouch Jr. was sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban.

The walls were of black stone, and the torches cast a dim light.

There were empty benches on either side of him, but there were many shadows on the row of tallest benches above him.

They were all talking quietly, but there was an ominous silence in the hall as the door slammed shut behind Harry. An indifferent voice sounded in the courtroom.

you are late.

Sorry, said Harry nervously, I—I didn't know the time had changed.

It wasn't the jury's fault, said the voice. An owl was sent to your house this morning. Sit down.

Harry looked down at the chair in the middle of the Inquisition Chamber, the armrests of which concealed the shackles. He'd seen the shackles pop out like life and secure anyone who sat in the chair.

His footsteps echoed loudly as he walked across the stony ground. The shackles clanked menacingly as Harry sat cautiously on the edge of the chair, but did not lock him.

Feeling even more uncomfortable, Harry looked up at the people sitting on the bench above. From what he could see, there were about fifty people sitting there, all of them wearing plum-colored robes with a beautifully crafted silver w embroidered on the left side of the chest, all of them from Staring at him from under their noses, some had meticulous expressions on their faces, while others looked curiously curious.

In the middle of the front row sits Cornelius Fudge, Minister for Magic, also known as the Minister of Magic.

Fudge was a fat man who often wore a gray-green magic hat, but he took it off today; he also took off his usual indulgent smile when he talked to Harry today, and this transformation made him laugh. Harry had a feeling almost out of place...

A broad, square-jawed witch sits to Fudge's left, wearing a monocle with a terrifying expression. To Fudge's right was another witch, but she was seated far back on the bench, so her face was entirely in shadow.

Very well, said Fudge, the defendant has arrived--albeit the last--let's begin. Are you ready? he asked the room.

Yes, sir, said an enthusiastic voice Harry knew well. Ron's older brother Percy was sitting at the far end of the front bench. Harry looked up at Percy, hoping to see something in him, but there was no response. Percy's eyes were hidden behind horn-framed glasses, a piece of parchment was in front of him, and a large quill was in his hand.

A disciplinary hearing on August 2, said Fudge in a loud voice, while Percy immediately took notes, will hear Mr. Harry Potter's breach of the Restriction of Minors' Magic and the International Statute of Magical Secrecy. Mr Harry Potter is a resident of 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey.

Interrogators: Cornelius Oswald Fudge, Minister for Magic; Emira Susan Bowness, Head of the Enforcement of the Magic Act; Dorothy Jane Umbridge, Senior Minister of Magic Undersecretary. Recorder: Percy Agnatis Weasley—”

Counsel, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, said a calm voice behind Harry, who turned his head so quickly that he twisted his neck.

Dumbledore was walking across the room peacefully. He was wearing a dark blue robe and had a very calm expression on his face. His long silver beard and hair gleamed in the torchlight.

Dumbledore stood next to Harry and looked up at Fudge through his glasses,

His half-moon glasses framed the middle of his long, aquiline nose. The members of the jury began to whisper.

All eyes were now on Dumbledore. Some people looked distressed, while others were slightly terrified; while the two older wizards in the back row waved their hands in welcome.

When Harry saw Dumbledore, a powerful emotion rose in his chest, a feeling of hope that was no less than hearing the song of the phoenix.

He wanted to meet Dumbledore's eyes, but Dumbledore wasn't looking at him; he kept staring at the visibly distraught Fudge.

Ah, said Fudge, who looked completely taken aback. Dumbledore. Yes. Did you - er - get word of our - er - changing the time - er - and place of the hearing?

I was bound to miss the hearing, said Dumbledore cheerily, however, thanks to a lucky mistake, I arrived at the Ministry three hours early, so nothing was lost.

Yes - well - I think we need another chair - I - Weasley, can you -?

Never mind, never mind, said Dumbledore cheerfully; he drew out his wand, made a small gesture, and a soft chintz armchair appeared beside Harry.

Dumbledore sat down, splayed the ends of his long fingers, and studied Fudge carefully through them with an interested look.

The members of the jury were still whispering, flustered and fidgeting; they were not quiet until Fudge spoke again.

Yes, Fudge looked through his notes slowly and said again: Okay, then. Therefore. Allegation. Yes. Fudge pulled out a piece of parchment from the pile of documents in front of him, and took a deep breath , and start reading.

The charge against the defendant is as follows: The defendant knowingly used Patronus magic in a Muggle-populated area, after having received a written warning of a charge of similar magic, should have been fully aware that his conduct was unlawful, and was Performed in front of a Muggle at 9:23pm on August 2nd. The defendant's behavior violated the provisions of Article 3 of the Regulations on the Restriction of Magic of Minors formulated in 875, and at the same time violated the provisions of Article 3 of the Regulations on Magical Secrecy of the International Union of Wizards.

Are you Mr. Harry James Potter, 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey? Fudge asked, staring at Harry from above the parchment.

Yes, said Harry.

Three years ago you received a formal warning from the Ministry of Magic about the illegal use of magic, didn't you?

Yes, but—

But you still cast the Patronus Charm on the night of August 2nd, right?

Yes, said Harry, but—

You know that children under the age of seven are not allowed to use magic outside of school, right?

Yes, but—

You know you're in an area full of Muggles, don't you?

Yes, but—

You were fully aware that you were very close to a Muggle, weren't you?
