I created the Bureau of Anomaly Control
#172 - 169. "Shadow"
“You're the one who wants to kill me.” Ma En could feel the shadow slowly “coming alive,” and could sense that its form of existence was quite unique.
The shadow was slightly slower than Ma En to realize this:
“It seems I am one of many shadows, even appearing only when you came here. You triggered the defense mechanism I left in Lei Yu's mind, which means he has lost.
“I guess he didn't find Qin Lan's location either, right?”
Ma En said:
“You're not entirely a shadow.”
The shadow's body leaned back slightly:
“That's right, you should be able to perceive that I am not an independent soul that actually exists, but I am enough to stop you from proceeding. You can no longer find any information I left on Lei Yu, go back.
“You can kill him, or take him to me to make a deal, but since you've reached this point, you should already know what orders I gave, right?”
Ma En nodded slightly, and then a desk chair appeared behind him.
He sat down with his hands on the armrests:
“You ordered him to kill me.
“This is actually a bit incomprehensible to me. You clearly have other purposes. Is my death such an important matter to you?”
The shadow shrugged, looking at him:
“Although I gave the order to him, it's not my intention, but rather some politicians in the Federal Council whom I've never even met. They must have made this decision after reading the report about you, but I don't know what they're thinking.
“I am just a reflection of their will.”
Ma En looked at him with curious eyes:
“In other words, you have no objections to me. In that case, can you tell me how to divert those politicians' attention away from me? After all, I'm just an ordinary, unlucky member of the Salvation Alliance.
“I certainly don't want them to remember me.”
He said this because of the prophecy of the Divine Firmament Walker. One of the three paths she pointed out was a deal with the Federation, so he tentatively made this request.
If Ma En really wanted to live, he would be safe as long as he stayed in the Bureau of Anomalous Control, so he wasn't as worried about the Federation's hostility as he claimed—he was deliberately exposing his false needs, giving the other party a chance to use him to complete the deal.
The shadow smiled with a hint of jest:
“Sorry, but I have no reason to give you any pointers, let alone that we're not really talking. Otherwise, I might have given you some help depending on my mood…”
Ma En wasn't surprised by his answer, but he still heard what he was expecting:
“That's the key. You're not a real shadow. Are you willing to exist like this?”
The shadow raised his eyebrows in surprise:
“A very good attempt at sowing discord, but if what you said could happen, 'I' wouldn't let me exist in this form and talk to you. But you don't have to be particularly afraid…
“Because I don't care about you at all, and the Federation's resources are limited. In the short term after Lei Yu's failure, you don't have to fear them coming to bother you again, or sending out enemies much stronger than him.
“Because you're not worth it.”
The Federation is a cold-blooded and ruthless machine, driven only by various interests. The reason those politicians want to kill Ma En is just because they are worried that he is related to the Divine Firmament Walker, but they can't delay the progress of the truce with the Salvation Alliance because of this.
After he killed Lei Yu, the Federation would not waste unnecessary resources on him.
Because it's not worth it.
But this is just their reason for wanting to kill Ma En, not the shadow's.
Half of his answer was a lie. The shadow not only knew the reason why the Federation politicians wanted to kill Ma En, but also, in fact, he was secretly facilitating the killing of Ma En.
And his reason, although different from the politicians', also stemmed from the Divine Firmament Walker, but after Ma En came here, the shadow abandoned his previous idea and had other ideas.
“But actually, we can also have some other small deals.” the shadow said, “I think you should be able to guess the Federation's purpose in capturing you.”
Ma En pretended and said:
“You don't have to think about getting Qin Lan's whereabouts from me.”
The shadow smiled triumphantly:
“So you do know. I wasn't so sure at first, but don't worry, because we won't do anything to Qin Lan, because her sister has already secured her safety and freedom.
“Or rather, she has secured it for all members of the Salvation Alliance. My subordinates have unilaterally sent information to several Salvation Alliance members in the Southern Federation, expressing our desire for a truce and peace, and most importantly…
“Our common threat.”
Ma En pretended to be curious and asked:
“What threat?”
The shadow said with a slightly reproachful tone:
“You have reached an alliance with the Moon God, but you don't even know what you are doing. You, who call yourselves the Salvation Alliance, are pushing this world into the abyss…”
Ma En interrupted:
“Are you saying that we are pushing the world into the abyss, referring to us repeating what you have done?”
The shadow coughed lightly without any embarrassment:
“Yes, we have indeed reached some cooperation with the gods, but that is all under our control. They will face the obstruction of the entire Federation, but your ally, the Moon God, is completely different.
“As a telepath, you should be able to perceive her danger.
“In fact, I was a little surprised that you escaped her influence. She has a strong possessiveness towards the psychic field in the Southern Federation, and even exterminated almost all wild psychic creatures in this land for this reason, which means she will definitely not stand by and watch you invade her territory.
“This is also why I am willing to discuss this matter with you. You did not fall in front of her, and few Rank IV psychic entities can do this.
“Due to the confidentiality agreement, I can only say now that she is threatening our world. If you and we continue to fight each other like this, she and the other gods will become the nightmare of all mankind. We have to contact Qin Lan.”
Ma En said without changing his expression:
“I can negotiate on her behalf. We cannot expose her to your sight, and I cannot be sure whether what you are saying is true or false. If you are sincere, you can send someone to negotiate with us.
“But can this conversation be known by the real shadow? You know, you are just…”
“A shadow?” the man said with a smile, “Yes, but we have a complex way of existing. At this moment, I am just a defense mechanism in Lei Yu's brain, but that will not be the case later.”
But when two shadows intersect, there is no way to distinguish them.
