#3 - 3 The Devil, the Mad King, the Prophet
Chapter 3: The Devil, the Mad King, the Prophet
Fifth floor, a spacious activity room.
A beautiful woman with wavy hair stood before Ma En and Ning Changkong. She was Liu Yujun, the resident doctor in charge of the group, and Dr. Li's former assistant.
Four chairs were arranged in a semicircle facing her. Ning Changkong sat on the far left, with Ma En next to a young woman with her legs crossed.
This tall beauty with beautiful brown skin was Cao Yan. She wore exotic accessories on her wrists and ankles, and she believed herself to be the reincarnation of a male ruler from the Gulam Empire, planning to resurrect her deceased lover from a few years ago using ancient magical rituals.
Sitting in the last chair was a shy boy with a youthful face and delicate features. His eyes held a hint of fear, as if Ma En and the others were dangerous beasts.
This boy was Lu Yide, rumored to be a murderer with multiple personality disorder.
Dr. Liu took a nervous deep breath. The other two women present came from wealthy families, and Lu Yide's father was an even more powerful figure. She couldn't afford to offend any of them.
Only Ma En was an ordinary person with a similar status to her.
"Is there anything you'd like to talk about?" she asked, following her prepared script.
Ma En wanted to ask where the second basement floor was and who his current attending physician was.
Although Dr. Li was dead, the way out hadn't disappeared with him. He could simply repeat what he had already proven to be feasible—bribe his attending physician.
However, he didn't rush to ask, to avoid revealing his memory loss.
Ning Changkong also seemed to have something to say, but patiently watched the others. Cao Yan, on the other hand, didn't seem to hear the doctor at all and was examining her accessories.
Lu Yide was nervously observing the others.
After waiting for about half a minute, and confirming that no one else wanted to speak first, the boy cautiously raised his right arm, looking at the doctor with a questioning gaze.
Dr. Liu gave a gentle smile:
"Go ahead, don't feel any pressure."
The customer is always right.
Lu Yide said in a very low voice:
"Thank you…"
"I want to talk about my own situation. In my memory, I was just preparing a birthday gift for Xiao Ni, and then I suddenly appeared here.
"Before this, I didn't even know he existed."
He was referring to his other personality.
The boy closed his eyes in pain, turning his face away with some difficulty:
"My father told me that he killed Xiao Ni."
The boy's voice was choked with sobs and anger:
"I don't know why he did it, but there is indeed a devil living inside my body, and my father threw me and him in here together.
"This is a mistake.
"We need to bring this devil to justice and avenge Xiao Ni, and I'm willing to go to the stake with him."
He looked at Dr. Liu and pleaded:
"Please let me be discharged. He deserves to be executed…"
Dr. Liu shook her head, interrupting him gently:
"According to the law, you didn't kill her.
"You don't have to pay the price for that devil, and only through our treatment can you completely kill him.
"Don't you want to avenge her with your own hands?"
Ma En found it incredible, but it seemed that this young man was indeed a mental patient.
Lu Yide looked at the others with a blank expression:
"You should agree with what I'm saying, right?"
Ning Changkong's mind was elsewhere, and she casually replied:
"Dr. Liu is right, it's not your fault."
The brown-skinned woman, Cao Yan, commented casually:
"Your life and death are not in your own hands. Those who hold power are the ones who decide your fate."
He looked at Ma En with desperation, as if he were the last straw he could grasp:
"Sir, do you also think I shouldn't die?"
But Ma En shrugged:
"I think the girl lying in the ground is the most qualified to decide your and his fate. Maybe you can think about what she would want you to do.
"You are the one here who knows her best, aren't you?"
Maybe it was Ma En mentioning the girl that triggered him, but Lu Yide lowered his head after hearing this, as if he were contemplating something.
Ning Changkong glanced at Ma En.
Dr. Liu quickly changed the subject, to prevent the boy from continuing to discuss whether he should die:
"What about the other three? Do you have anything you want to share or confide in others?"
Cao Yan still looked like she didn't care about anything, while Ning Changkong looked at Ma En with curious eyes, as if waiting for him to say something.
It was his turn.
Ma En nodded slightly:
"Actually, I've been thinking about getting discharged recently."
Ning Changkong looked at Ma En with a surprised expression, Cao Yan showed an interested look, and even the boy with his head lowered slightly raised his eyebrows.
But Dr. Liu sneered inwardly. She knew very well that Ma En couldn't possibly really want to be discharged.
He was probably the patient with the lowest social status in the entire advanced ward. Ma En was an orphan, and his sister's annual income was only 150,000—half the average annual cost of the advanced ward. He was able to stay here entirely because of the church's subsidies.
Even this mutual aid group originally didn't have a place for Ma En. He was forced in by Dr. Xu, which meant that he had given Xu Wen a considerable sum of money.
Moreover, Dr. Liu knew very well the reason why Ma En did this—he was in love with Ning Changkong.
She had noticed it in the past. Ma En would often secretly observe the girl. Obviously, this penniless madman thought he had a chance to pursue this rich young lady, and even squandered the money his sister gave him for other things.
She felt sorry for Ma En's sister.
The worst part was that Ma En had disrupted her plans.
Cao Yan suddenly said inexplicably:
"We are all kings of our own bodies."
Dr. Liu looked at Ma En impatiently and said:
"I said last month, if you really want to be discharged, you can ask your sister Chen Yun to go through the procedures at any time."
Dr. Liu's tone made Ma En feel puzzled, but this was far less than another question in his mind—where did this Chen Yun come from?
Not only that, Ma En also noticed that his "sister's" surname was different from his.
Dr. Liu asked with displeasure:
"But didn't you say she went to help the church in other states and couldn't come back in the next few months?"
Liu Yujun knew that he didn't really want to be discharged, because Ma En had told her about it last month, and had refused to ask Chen Yun to go through the procedures.
The church?
Ma En remembered that his message mentioned a warning to the angel.
While Liu Yujun was speaking, Ning Changkong also showed a hesitant expression. She didn't want Ma En to be discharged, but finally decided to say:
"Do you remember what I said before entering the elevator?"
Of course Ma En remembered.
Money can buy anything.
This coincided with his thoughts.
He looked at Dr. Liu and asked:
"Besides…"
"Wait," Dr. Liu rudely interrupted Ma En.
She turned her gaze to the boy who was looking up, and asked with an ingratiating expression:
"How are you feeling?"
Liu Yujun's behavior and attitude surprised the other three people present.
The boy said calmly:
"You're right, I'm going to kill him with my own hands."
Ma En was full of doubts. Although Dr. Liu's behavior was somewhat impolite, he couldn't figure out what was going on.
Was this the normal attitude of a doctor towards a patient, or had he done something to offend her in the past?
He didn't remember anything.
Ma En looked at the other two. Their expressions were normal.
But what he didn't know was that Cao Yan hadn't been listening to their conversation at all.
And Ning Changkong didn't reveal any emotions, because she didn't want Ma En to feel more embarrassed, but the girl vaguely sensed that…
Ma En's social status might be far lower than she had initially imagined.
Liu Yujun would never dare to speak to herself or other patients in such a tone.
And the more he remained silent, the more worried the girl became about his emotional state. Unusual repression often foreshadowed a twisted outburst.
And Dr. Liu wasn't surprised by his silence at all. For ordinary people like them, observing people's expressions and adapting to the situation was a necessary survival skill in this society, so Ma En's behavior of swallowing his anger was quite normal in her eyes.
"…Well, your current thinking is correct," Dr. Liu comforted him, patting the boy's shoulder. "Then let's stop here today, okay?"
She looked at Lu Yide with a questioning look in her eyes.
"Ah…" Lu Yide said naturally, "Okay, okay."
Ma En took the lead to get up and walked out of the activity room. Seeing his figure, Ning Changkong felt that he was still angered by Dr. Liu, and quickly followed him. Cao Yan got up and left unhurriedly.
Until only the boy and Dr. Liu were left in the room.
"What's going on with that Ma En?" Lu Yide restrained the childishness on his face and looked coldly in the direction where Ma En left. "Didn't my father ask you to arrange a few pretty girls? Why is there a man?"
Dr. Liu was startled.
Lu Yide impatiently crossed his legs:
"But the clumsy lie you told him worked quite well. Kill myself with my own hands? How could he possibly kill himself? I didn't expect him to actually believe it."
Dr. Liu understood that the one sitting in front of her was no longer the kind and simple boy.
But the devil living in his body.
Lu Yide looked up and down at the stunned female doctor, and licked his lips evilly:
"Although you have a decent figure, you're far inferior to those two overall, even not as good as his lover. If you were prettier, I might have made a move."
This made her break out in a cold sweat.
Dr. Liu had seen the photos of the crime scene. The girl's body was covered in bruises and scabs. No one could imagine the cruel torture she had suffered before her death.
And it was from the person she trusted most.
Lu Yide smiled pleasantly:
"Look at how scared you are. Don't worry, if I were interested in you, I wouldn't say it.
"That pretty girl with the hat is basically focused on Ma En. He's seriously affecting my pursuit of these two beauties. I don't want to see him next week."
Obviously, the "pursuit" in the boy's mouth was closer to what he did to his lover.
Liu Yujun had already thought that Ma En's appearance would bring trouble to her, so she was full of resentment towards him, but she didn't expect Lu Yide to be so angry:
"I didn't arrange for him to come in the first place, but the regulations…"
The boy interrupted her coldly:
"I don't care about any rules. My father paid the money, and it wasn't a small amount, Dr. Liu. If he dares to disturb my interest next time…
"Believe me, you don't want to know what a powerful madman can do."
The boy smiled, revealing his grim white teeth.
