I created the Bureau of Anomaly Control
#48 - 47. "Confession"
Stepping out of the Coordination Bureau, Mann pulled out his phone and casually sent a text to Qin Lan.
Although the Church wasn't aware that he was the Fallen Angel from four years ago, they definitely considered him a suspect, which was why he had hidden in the Viktor Sanatorium in the past.
And when the Coordination Bureau found Mann, he could no longer pretend, so the best course of action now was to provide a reasonable explanation before the Church became suspicious.
A lie.
Mann opened his contacts, found the name he had in mind, and pressed it.
Beep, beep...
The call connected immediately.
"Mann, what's wrong?" Chen Yun asked with some concern.
"Nothing," he replied. "I wanted to talk to you about something. Do you remember what I was like before I was admitted to the hospital four years ago?"
"Of course, I remember," Chen Yun said. "During that time, you always seemed to be thinking about something. Sometimes when I passed by you, you didn't even seem to see me, and you kept saying strange things to me."
As she spoke, a white shadow suddenly flashed in Mann's peripheral vision.
It was a pair of immaculate wings.
"Yeah," he said calmly. "And I wanted to go to the Viktor Sanatorium for treatment."
The angel had found him.
"Yes," Chen Yun said, the corners of her mouth unconsciously turning up. "It feels like it was just yesterday, and even now, I still forget that you've been discharged."
"What I wanted to say was..." Mann said, "Actually, I wasn't telling the whole truth."
To Mann's surprise, Chen Yun's voice was still quite calm:
"No matter what the truth is, you don't need to worry about what I think."
It sounded like she had already noticed something was wrong.
"What I'm about to say might sound strange, and you might even think that I haven't been cured at all, but please listen patiently," Mann said. "Four years ago, I did think I was crazy, but it wasn't until recently that I realized I didn't have any mental problems at all."
Chen Yun affirmed in a gentle tone:
"Okay."
"My mind was abnormal because I was awakening a superpower at that time," Mann said calmly. "I can erase other people's memories, but I hadn't controlled it then, which caused my brain to be greatly affected."
Chen Yun said firmly:
"I believe you."
Mann didn't know if she really believed him or not, but it didn't matter, because these words weren't for Chen Yun to hear.
He continued:
"Some time ago, a government agency found me and gave me a job. Remember when I said I had money to rent a house? That's the real reason.
"And the reason I'm calling you is because East New State will become very dangerous for ordinary people in the near future, and I hope you won't come back for the time being."
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds.
Then she asked:
"Are you in danger?"
Mann replied:
"No, my ability isn't suitable for combat, so I don't need to be in dangerous places.
"If you still doubt the truth of this, I can have other members of the agency call you."
Chen Yun said gently:
"Mann, no matter what you say, I will believe you. Besides, I am a believer. Do you think it's an unbelievable thing for me that supernatural powers exist?
"I'll talk to the bishop, but I believe the part about superpowers, but I can't be sure that you're not in danger, so if you don't want me to go back, you have to let me know you're safe on time.
"Can you do that?"
Mann immediately agreed:
"No problem."
He wasn't too worried about Chen Yun's safety. She was likely being followed by a new guardian angel, which meant that if she ran to him, he would likely have to enter the angels' field of vision.
Although he had already been seen.
As Mann hung up the phone, the angel flapped its wings and soared into the distance.
If he wanted to be unconstrained, he either had to be strong enough to not fear the Church and the angels, or he had to find a way to clear his name and pretend to be an ability user who couldn't defeat the angels.
Besides that, there was a trivial matter waiting for him to resolve.
Golden Banyan State.
Chen Yun put away her phone and walked into the church.
The local bishop was waiting for her inside.
"Xiao Yun," the elderly bishop said with a kind smile on his face, "You said you wanted to talk to me about work?"
Chen Yun nodded slightly:
"My brother has been discharged from the hospital, so I may have to stop working at any time..."
He said kindly:
"It's okay, I can understand your difficulties. If you want to go back, just tell me."
She nodded:
"Thank you."
Chen Yun really couldn't be sure if what Mann said was true or false.
But if it was true, then staying here was definitely the best choice. If Mann was sane, then what he said was worth her trust.
She understood her brother.
And if it was false, she didn't plan to go to East New State just like that. Based on what she had learned in the past four years, showing strong distrust towards a mentally ill person was a terrible approach.
But no matter what the truth was...
Chen Yun knew very well that the bishop in front of her wasn't so kind to everyone, and not just any pastor could apply for more than 200,000 in medical subsidies for her brother every year.
Many things were more complicated than she could see.
