I cultivate mushrooms in warhammer
#11 - Spreading kindness
Stepping out of the cigarette factory, Li Nuo stretched languidly.
Regarding the recently concluded examination, he had something to say, though he wasn't sure if he should.
He thought the person who set the exam rules might be a genius… of sorts.
When the first exam ended, Li Nuo suddenly realized that it wasn't because he was too incompetent to finish the paper, but that the questions themselves were impossible to complete.
What kind of sane person uses the entire question bank as the exam paper?
He really couldn't fathom what they were thinking.
"Li Nuo, remember to register the day after tomorrow, don't forget," Amy said, greeting Li Nuo as she walked out of the gate.
Li Nuo nodded, "Thank you for the reminder, I'll remember."
Amy stopped, gazing at Li Nuo, lost in thought, her expression somewhat complex.
"What's wrong?" Li Nuo asked, puzzled.
Could it be that Amy had discovered he'd deliberately underperformed in the second exam?
"Come with me, I have something to tell you."
"Alright, lead the way."
The two avoided the other students and went to a relatively quiet alley.
Amy pursed her lips, somewhat hesitant, and after a long deliberation, she finally spoke:
"That… becoming an apprentice requires tuition fees…"
"Oh, right," Li Nuo suddenly realized, remembering the matter of tuition fees.
The original owner's family was dirt poor; if it weren't for his father's hard work, saving every penny, he definitely wouldn't have been able to afford the academy.
The original owner's father had already passed away.
In the eyes of others, a poor teenager like himself probably wouldn't be able to afford the tuition.
But was that really the case?
Li Nuo pondered to himself, perhaps he could use the money from selling mushrooms to pay the tuition.
Meanwhile, Amy looked at Li Nuo, who was deep in thought, and mustered her courage to say:
"If you don't mind, I'd like to sponsor you in my father's name. When you have an income in the future, you can repay the tuition to me."
"Huh?" Li Nuo was stunned.
Amy nodded firmly:
"Yes, I'm sponsoring you to become an apprentice, that's all. Don't overthink it, I'm just doing what I can. I don't want to see someone who can make outstanding contributions to the Empire be buried because they lack money. You should use your time and energy on more valuable endeavors."
Li Nuo took a slight breath, carefully examining the girl in front of him.
He gradually realized that, besides having a beautiful exterior, she also possessed a noble and pure soul.
"Thank you. I won't say much in the way of thanks. In short, I won't let you feel that sponsoring me was a mistake."
"Then it's settled. Come to register as normal the day after tomorrow, I'll arrange everything beforehand. I'll go first, see you the day after tomorrow."
Amy turned and left, her steps quick and hurried, like a rabbit trying hard to suppress the joy in its heart.
Perhaps in her heart, helping someone in need was far more gratifying than getting first place in an exam.
Li Nuo chuckled and shook his head, unsure of what to feel for a moment.
He calmed his mind, gathered his thoughts, and began to execute his survival plan.
The problems of food and water were solved, next was getting clean air and moving into a safer house.
Now that he was near the cigarette factory, he could see if there were any suitable houses nearby.
Right, he also needed to buy materials for growing milk mushrooms, and he had a transaction with Leia tomorrow night.
Li Nuo planned to use the sewage that the Lower Nest residents used for free to water the ordinary mushrooms for the trade.
He would still use the system's purified water for the sample-grade mushrooms that he would eat himself.
He also had to ask Leia during tomorrow's transaction if they could change the trading currency.
Walking on the road with hundreds of ration cards, Li Nuo always felt like countless eyes were staring at him, which was really frightening.
…
…
Time flew by quickly while finding a house and growing mushrooms.
The next day, in the evening, it was still the alley adjacent to the ruins.
This time, Li Nuo arrived at the transaction point a dozen minutes early.
There were four bags at his feet, filled with mushrooms.
After waiting for a while, Leia arrived.
She covered her face with a black cloak and scarf, revealing only her deep purple eyes:
"Sorry, I'm late."
"No, I came early," Li Nuo shook his head, his gaze passing over Leia to look behind her.
In the dark area deep in the alley, two faint red glows hung in the air, like a pair of eyes that could emit light in the dark.
"That's my companion, Big Zhuang, he's a Rat-Skin," Leia introduced simply.
The eyes hidden in the dark moved forward a few inches, and the owner of the eyes showed half of his body at the intersection of light and darkness, bowing to Li Nuo.
It was indeed a Rat-Skin.
He was about one and a half meters tall, his skin covered with dark brown hair, and he looked similar to a mole.
The Rat-Skin were on the list of aliens in the Human Empire.
However, they were not exterminated.
Besides being ugly, the Rat-Skin had other positive aspects.
They were gentle, emotionally stable, only slightly worse than capybaras, and very fond of farming.
As long as outsiders didn't destroy their fields, the Rat-Skin were happy to deal with humans.
"Hello."
Li Nuo waved and greeted the Rat-Skin.
"Hello, human," the Rat-Skin shook his claws and retreated into the shadows.
Faced with an alien speaking human language, Li Nuo was stunned for a moment, then relieved.
This was the Warhammer world, wasn't it normal for aliens to speak Low Gothic?
Li Nuo picked up the bag at his feet, "Take a look at the goods first, Leia."
"Okay, give me some time."
Leia carefully inspected it once.
The two quickly completed the transaction.
Li Nuo received a full six hundred ration cards, and Leia picked up the bag and walked towards Big Zhuang, letting him carry the four bags away first.
Forty kilograms of mushrooms made Big Zhuang cry out with joy.
He tied the bags to his chest and back with ropes, and soon disappeared into the darkness of the alley.
Leia unloaded her backpack, placed it on the ground, and opened the zipper.
Milky white light shot out from the backpack, illuminating Li Nuo's face with a snow-white light.
"These are the fluorescent spores you wanted. Since most of the fluorescent spores are relatively small, I caught some more. There are sixty-two in the bag."
Li Nuo squatted down, opened the backpack, and activated the system's fungus analysis function.
【Name: Fluorescent Spores】
【Analysis Result:】
【A peculiar planktonic fungus, with over 90% of its body occupied by air. The light comes from metabolism.】
【This fungus is extremely toxic, so much so that no bacteria has yet appeared that can contaminate it. Do not touch it directly with your hands, otherwise the area of contact will permanently lose sensation and lose all function.】
It really is poisonous, and the toxicity is not low.
Li Nuo frowned.
Leia quickly asked, "Are you not satisfied? I can catch some more for you."
"No, it's not that. I'm just thinking about how to remove the toxicity of the fluorescent spores," Li Nuo waved his hand, stood up straight, and handed the bag on his shoulder to Leia:
"Here, this is the final payment, three kilograms of sample-grade mushrooms."
Leia hugged the mushrooms and the bag in her arms, tentatively asking:
"Do you still need fluorescent spores? As long as five kilograms, no, as long as four kilograms of sample-grade mushrooms, I can guarantee to provide you with a batch of fluorescent spores every two days."
Li Nuo stroked his chin, his gaze moving to Leia's forehead, observing the mutated area:
"Hmm… it seems like the area of the scales is indeed a little smaller."
"Yes, I also think it's getting better," Leia touched the scales near her hairline, her eyes filled with longing.
Li Nuo suddenly smiled, deciding to pass on the kindness that had been conveyed from Amy:
"Since clean food combined with medicine really works, then I will provide you with sample-grade mushrooms for a long time. In exchange, you do me a favor. Don't worry, it's not illegal."
