I cultivate mushrooms in warhammer
#141 - Matching brain waves with Chagatai
After more than ten minutes, Li Nuo finished reading the gene template of the Bone Drinker, and his surging thoughts calmed down.
There were two pieces of news in front of him, one good and one bad.
The good news was that after the gene purity reached 80%, the Bone Drinker-like creatures could provide 3 kinds of fungal abilities.
They were the Mental Network, Bone Drinking Technique, and Domination Technique.
Needless to say about the Mental Network, those who understand it will understand.
The Bone Drinking Technique was a bit powerful. Its effect was to forcibly extract the target's spinal cord to quickly repair its own injuries, until the target was drained alive.
The Domination Technique was even more overbearing. It could forcibly transform a life form into its own servant.
The three fungal abilities were stronger than the other, but the bad news was that the unlocking difficulty of the three fungal abilities was very high.
When the gene purity of the Bone Drinker-like creatures reached 80%, the Mental Network was unlocked.
When it reached 90%, the Bone Drinking Technique was unlocked.
When it reached 95%, the Domination Technique was unlocked.
From 90% to 95%, only 5 percentage points were increased, but the difficulty could be described as a chasm.
I believe many Warhammer players have been puzzled by the same question:
Why would apothecaries in the 40k era be troubled by the decrease in gene-seed purity?
If the purity is reduced, wouldn't it be better to remove the impurities from the gene-seed?
If the impurities are reduced, the purity will naturally increase, right?
But that's not the case.
After the impurities are removed, the gene fragments where the impurities were originally located are blank, and there are no gene codes on them, so the purity of the gene-seed will not increase.
The only way to improve the gene-seed is to perform positive editing work on the existing gene-seed according to the perfect gene template.
In the Warhammer 40k era, the gene templates of the Primarchs were basically lost.
Apothecaries can only refer to the gene-seed with the highest purity to create new seeds.
But here's a problem.
The expression vector of the gene template itself also contains certain gene fragments.
The expression vector Li Nuo chose was his own developed yeast — CVCPSE - ABB-15.
The gene fragment of this yeast is very concise, only possessing the basic functions required for yeast metabolism.
But even so, the Bone Drinker-like creatures made with this yeast as the expression vector only have a gene purity of 39%.
The gene-seed of the Space Marines is more complex.
When apothecaries replicate the gene-seed, the purity of the new gene-seed will inevitably decrease.
This will lead to a phenomenon that troubles the battle group apothecaries:
The purity of the gene-seed shows a general trend of only decreasing and not increasing.
In order to combat the problem of declining purity, by the 40k era, various battle groups widely adopted the gene-seed of the Ultramarines.
On the one hand, Guilliman, as the Primarch, did not fall to Chaos or disappear, and could stably produce gene templates.
On the other hand, the gene-seed purity of the Ultramarines is very stable and only decreases when directly subjected to radiation and Chaos corruption.
This indirectly shows that the expression vector used to make the Ultramarines' gene-seed is almost perfect.
This expression vector can not only fully express Guilliman's gene template, but also provide it with additional "resistance", ensuring that its gene fragments are not easily tampered with.
Li Nuo thought of two ideas to improve the gene purity of the Bone Drinker-like creatures.
First, use the fungal simulation function to discover yeast with stronger gene expression capabilities, thereby increasing the gene purity of the Bone Drinker-like creatures.
Second, get in touch with the Ultramarines and find a way to get their expression vector used to make gene-seed.
There was little hope for the first idea.
This was Li Nuo's heartfelt words.
The system spent more than 100,000 simulation days developing the CVCPSE-ABB-15 yeast.
After this yeast was born, Li Nuo conducted a lot of improvement experiments on it, but found that it backfired and the expression ability decreased instead.
Therefore, on the road of using fungal gene simulation to develop expression vectors, Li Nuo has temporarily entered a dead end.
When will a new yeast appear, and when will it be able to be used for gene editing, and when will the expression vector usher in a major update?
There was some hope for the second idea.
Find a corpse of an Ultramarine and extract the gene-seed from him, and the expression vector will be obtained.
It is not easy to find a lone Ultramarine corpse.
In large-scale casualty conflicts, it is easier to find the corpse of an Ultramarine, and it is still the kind of corpse whose seeds have not been recovered in time.
Li Nuo tried hard to search his memory, wanting to find a major event where the Ultramarines suffered heavy casualties.
Soon, a classic example of the Blue Boys getting more and more beaten appeared in his mind.
The Battle of Calth, the battle where the Word Bearers ambushed the Ultramarines but were pushed back, took place in 007.M31.
Alas, no, no, the Battle of Calth will not happen until 21 years later. My hair will be white waiting. I still have to think of other ways and take care of the upcoming Bone Drinkers first.
Li Nuo sighed secretly in his heart and swept his thoughts out of his mind.
He put the logic conduit on the ground, smashed it with a machete, and destroyed the gene template contained in it from the physical level.
Li Nuo felt that it was not safe enough, so he took out a can of liquid promethium from the fungal warehouse.
This can of liquid promethium was extracted from the promethium ore by the Ancient Fuel Fungus and can be temporarily stored in the fungal warehouse.
Pour the liquid promethium on the fragments of the logic conduit and burn it on the spot.
The fire flickered, the burnt smell permeated, and the fragments of the logic conduit melted in the flames, turning into a sticky black juice.
Li Nuo nodded in satisfaction and called Xiao Xi to return the way they came.
When they arrived at the main gate of the vault, four shuttles appeared in the camp outside the gate.
The Tech-Orks were jumping up and down in the shuttles, making large-scale modifications to the shuttles.
Li Nuo sent Xiao Xi to spray the medicine on the ground.
Xiao Xi took the order, bowed and saluted, and left quickly.
Beast ran over happily, holding a piece of animal skin with a list of supplies recorded on it.
Boss, we captured more than three thousand lasguns, sixty Ork communicators, a dozen data slates…"
Beast rattled off the list of loot, and finally said:
"I sent eight Motorbike Boyz out to scout. They should be able to find the location of the derelict ship wreckage in half a day at most. Boss, should we build Boomdakka Snazzwagons or Dakkajets first?"
"Don't worry, let's figure out the strategy behind us before deciding what to build." Li Nuo snapped his fingers at Beast and ordered:
"Bring me the captured data slates. I want to see if there is any important information in them."
"Alright, Boss, I'll be right here." Beast ran away, and returned half a minute later with a dozen data slates in his arms.
Li Nuo took a data slate from the other party's arms and looked through it carefully, beckoning the other party to follow:
"Come on, follow me into the vault. I have important things for you to do."
Beast asked the Ork Boyz outside the door to watch the door, and entered the door with a pile of data slates.
The data slates came from the squad leader of the Eunuch people, and the content was similar.
Most of them were internal announcements and battle orders of the Eunuch people's raiding fleet, and a small part were passionate short videos secretly filmed by the Eunuch people…
Li Nuo coughed lightly, closed the data slate and threw it to Beast, leading the other party to stop in front of the Bone Drinker breeding machine.
The outer shell of the machine had been pried open by Li Nuo, and the pipes and lines inside were exposed.
Li Nuo introduced the purpose of each component to Beast and instructed the other party to do this and that.
Beast's eyes narrowed and he chuckled as he listened to Li Nuo's words.
"Boss, you are so awesome. You can even think of such cunning tricks. You are indeed my boss."
Beast frantically gestured with his thumbs up.
Li Nuo waved his hand, dispelling the flattery of Beast, and said in a deep voice:
"Have you remembered all my words clearly? Destroy the precise components that should be destroyed, and at the same time free up a space that can accommodate a small Ork. I want to put a special Ork in it. Don't screw up what I told you. The enemies that appear later will be more powerful than the Purple Skins, and we can't afford to make any mistakes."
"Okay! Boss, don't worry, I promise to get things done properly for you." Beast put away his smile and nodded solemnly.
"Okay, then I'm leaving." Li Nuo nodded slightly and logged off on the spot.
"Goodbye, Boss ~"
Li Nuo's consciousness left Space's body, and Space's temperament produced a subtle change.
Beast put the data slate in his arms into Space's arms, and snapped his fingers like Li Nuo:
"Follow me, I have something for you to do."
"Okay." Space responded and followed behind Beast.
When Li Nuo was there, Space, possessed by Li Nuo, was the boss.
When Li Nuo was not there, Space was Beast's follower, and Beast was the temporary boss.
Ordinary Orks could not switch so freely like Beast. Only Orks with Stupid Boyz genes could do it.
…
…
At the same time that the Space Beast Clan was exploding with troops at full speed.
The junction of the Solar Star Region and the Misty Star Region.
The void was quiet and distant, the sea of stars was vast, the stars twinkled, and the 915th Expedition Fleet was leaving a planet filled with black smoke.
This planet was once marked as "NC - X - S".
The Empire's cartographers used "NC" to represent planets that had not surrendered to the Empire, "X" to represent planets occupied by aliens, and "S" to represent that the planet had been placed on the Expedition Fleet's visiting schedule.
As the 915th Expedition Fleet went away, the planet's marking would soon be changed.
The alien civilization on it had been erased, leaving only ruins waiting to be rebuilt and humans who had surrendered to the Empire. (Note 0)
At the heart of the Expeditionary Fleet, the Gloriana-class flagship "Sword of the Storm" was celebrating their recent victory.
This command-type flagship belonged to the gene-father of the White Scars Legion—Jaghatai Khan.
The "Sword of the Storm's" decorative style was unique.
Other Primarchs' personal flagships often featured carved glass and elaborate colonnades, adorned with silver filigree and gilded carvings to showcase the Primarch's nobility.
But within the "Sword of the Storm," every decoration and cabin layout prioritized "acceleration."
Extravagant ornaments were removed entirely, their mass only serving as a burden to the ship's speed.
Thick, soft velvet carpets were replaced with thin animal hide rugs, aesthetically unappealing and lacking the plush feel of carpet, but unmatched in their lightness.
The latest novels are first published on 6_9_shu_ba!
High-backed chairs were discarded, their backs halved in height to further reduce the burden on acceleration.
Where plasteel could be used, ceramite was avoided; where ordinary steel sufficed, plasteel was shunned; and where bulletproof plastic could serve, steel was forsaken.
This drastic reduction in the flagship's mass resulted in the fastest flagship in the entire Imperium of Man. (Note 1)
Fast is good, sleek is awesome—that was the core philosophy of the Imperial speed freaks, the White Scars Legion.
Even the scribes in the scribal chamber had fewer metal plates than their counterparts, minimizing their own mass.
While other servitors were protected by armor, it could only wrap a large part of its body with animal skin, tapping on a lightweight mechanical keyboard to print documents.
"Click, clack, click… Ding."
The mechanical keyboard emitted a crisp sound, signaling the completion of a new document.
The scribe servitor alerted the record keeper, who was hunched over his work, in a synthetic electronic voice:
"Astropathic communication: World 01-13, Hive World-Epi-Mete, Governor's missive. Printing complete."
The record keeper took the printed copy, and a glimmer lit up in her eyes as she read something on it.
Leaving the scribal chamber, she walked down the narrow corridor to the entrance of the celebration hall, where the rich aroma of roasted meat and the scent of machine oil filled the air.
Two warriors clad in artificer power armor, the Keshig, guarded the gate.
They were members of Jaghatai Khan's bodyguard, responsible for the Primarch's close protection.
The towering Keshig lowered his head slightly, his crimson lenses shimmering as external sensors scanned the record keeper in a split second.
"Bichigchi, is this document so important that it must be delivered now?" The Keshig's voice boomed through the vox array. (Note 2)
Bichigchi nodded:
"Yes, this document is very important. The Khan instructed me that whoever can match the last two lines of the poem in their reply, I must deliver their letter to him as quickly as possible."
Bichigchi raised the manuscript in his hand:
"The Vice-Governor of Epi-Mete has matched the Khan's poem. As per the Khan's instructions, I must deliver this manuscript to him as soon as possible."
"Good, give it to me." The Keshig took the manuscript with his right hand, encased in a metal gauntlet, his movements gentle and cautious so as not to accidentally crush the paper.
The Keshig used an internal communication channel to signal those behind the door to open the gate.
The moment the door opened, the boisterous sounds of the celebration hall flooded into the corridor.
In the center of the celebration area, a circular ramp was set up, motorcycles spewing thick smoke as they raced around it, engines roaring.
The mechadendrite heads of the heavy metal band's servitors bobbed up and down, unleashing a frenzied wall of sound through their vox arrays and the electric guitars in their arms.
Plump sheep were roasting on primitive pyres, two servitors draped in animal hides occasionally turning the sizzling, dripping carcasses.
On the surrounding platforms, company commanders of the White Scars gathered, feasting on meat and drinking deeply, erupting into wild howls.
At the far end of the celebration grounds, Jaghatai Khan sat regally on a throne, the skulls of xenos impaled on the spikes of the chair back, hanging in the air.
Jaghatai held a microphone, preparing to demonstrate his signature skill to the assembled crowd—throat singing, known as Khöömii.
"Hoo— — — — — — — —"
The powerful breath resonated within the vocal cords, creating a unique sound.
Jaghatai precisely controlled the shape of his throat and the position of his tongue, achieving two distinct tones simultaneously—a deep, resonant bass and a high, ethereal melody.
"Tzzt." The pneumatic gate closed.
The sounds of the celebration hall were cut off by the metal door, and silence returned to the corridor as Bichigchi turned to leave.
The Khöömii continued behind the door.
"Hoo— — — — — — — — Eee— — — — — — — —"
"Oo leh, oo leh, woo woo woo woo oo leh, sobbing eee, bo eh, bo eh, bo eh— — — — — — — — — — —"
Waves of sound reverberated through every corner of the hall, the band servitors headbanging with increasing ferocity.
Blinding lights flashed wildly like lightning, casting the figures in a mysterious and savage aura.
Jaghatai's voice was piercing, like a thunderclap.
He roared and bellowed, expressing his rebellion against his circumstances and his dedication to his dreams through song, exuding an unwavering belief in breaking free from all constraints.
After a long while, the song ended, and thunderous applause and cheers erupted from the crowd.
Jaghatai handed his personal microphone to a servitor for maintenance, taking the letter from the Keshig to examine it.
"Why is Bichigchi delivering documents during the celebration?"
Jaghatai wiped the sweat from his forehead, impatiently unfolding the letter.
The Keshig replied:
"Bichigchi said that the person who wrote this letter matched your poem."
Jaghatai paused, his gaze skipping over the first part of the letter, focusing directly on the last two lines of poetry.
Jaghatai's gaze intensified, and at his command, a nearby servo-skull activated a data-slate, bringing up the missive sent to the Vice-Governor of Epi-Mete.
Placing the two missives side by side, the poems within them connected.
…
Do not say slander is like a deep wave, do not say the exiled are like sinking sand.
Though sifting and filtering a thousand times is arduous, only when the wild sand is blown away can gold be found. (Note 3)
…
In the missive to Epi-Mete, Jaghatai knew that the young Vice-Governor would face hardship because of the new technology, so he used "Do not say slander is like a deep wave, do not say the exiled are like sinking sand" as encouragement, hinting at his desire to cooperate with him.
And in Lino's reply to Jaghatai, Lino accurately matched the following two lines:
Though sifting and filtering a thousand times is arduous, only when the wild sand is blown away can gold be found.
These four lines of poetry originated from an era too distant, written in a unique language called "Xia," its origins untraceable.
After meeting his father, Jaghatai accompanied him to Terra, discovering a wealth of beautiful Xia poetry in the ancient museums.
Unfortunately, only he and a few of his closest brothers could understand its nuances; others felt nothing for such poetry.
Now, there might be one more person who shared his appreciation.
Jaghatai couldn't help but show a hint of joy:
"This Hive World Vice-Governor named Lino Weathersby is interesting. I am curious. Does he truly understand Xia, does he truly comprehend the meaning of these four lines?"
The Keshig glanced at the four lines of poetry and shook his head:
"Khan, I suspect that Lino Weathersby deliberately researched the origins of the first two lines to cater to your preferences, eventually finding the last two lines in the ancient museums of Terra. Writing the last two lines in his reply does not mean he understands the full meaning of these four lines. It's not that I dislike such obsequious behavior, but there are truly few in this world who can grasp its profound inner meaning."
"You have a point. But in any case, Lino Weathersby's actions are far better than those of the other governors. The letters I sent them contained Xia poetry from the 0k era of ancient Terra, and they, of all people, actually replied to me with Guilliman's High Gothic poetry. Humph."
Jaghatai folded the letter and placed it aside, resting his bent arm on his leg, and shouted down to the people below the platform:
"Hey, which star system is Epi-Mete in?"
The Navigator, drunk and disoriented with a wine jug in his arms, raised his head, his face flushed, and replied:
"Khan… hic! …Epi-Mete is in the Sol System."
"How long will it take us to get there?" Jaghatai asked.
The Navigator opened his third eye, examining the state of the Warp.
The war on a nearby planet had just ended, and there were obvious ripples and folds in the Warp.
The good news was that the Astronomican was still bright.
It provided the Navigator with a relatively stable route.
"Khan, I estimate that if we depart now, we can arrive in one Terran day."
Jaghatai slapped his thigh:
"Then let's go to Epi-Mete to replenish some supplies. Once resupplied, we will set off for the next planet. Tell the bridge to correct the course destination to Hive World-Epi-Mete, and depart immediately."
"Yes, Khan."
The Navigator staggered to his feet, preparing for the Warp jump.
Don't drink and drive, but he's sailing a ship, so what does drinking have to do with it?
Besides, he's not the only Navigator on the ship and in the expeditionary force.
