I cultivate mushrooms in warhammer
#17 - The road to rise
A cavern.
Li Nuo straightened up, hands on his hips, panting from exhaustion.
The difficulty of the excavation work was greater than he had anticipated.
He originally thought that with the virtual outline provided by the system, he only needed to dig along the outline to excavate the entire root system.
Now it seemed that this was not the case at all.
The soil near the mushroom was full of decaying matter, mucus, bacteria, insect eggs, and rocks as hard as steel.
The complexity of the composition was unheard of and unseen.
As soon as the drill went into the ground, stone chips splashed and all kinds of filth sprayed out, as if drilling into the aorta of a giant beast.
In this short while, Li Nuo was covered in mud.
This work was truly not for humans.
Should he just slip away?
Wouldn't it be better to go back and do business with Leia?
It's not like he had to freeload on the free double meals at the Kramm Cigarette Factory.
Upon second thought, Li Nuo dismissed the idea of giving up.
The living environment in the Lower Nest District was truly harsh, with the vast majority of houses being tin shacks, and only a few being apartments or small buildings.
It was said that the environment in the Middle Nest District was much better, almost like the cities before he transmigrated, where everyone could live in apartments.
The supervisor had previously mentioned that after five years of work, one could go to live in the Middle Nest District.
Li Nuo was still looking forward to this.
Thinking carefully, the channels for a Lower Nest resident to become a Middle Nest resident seemed to be only two paths: serving a family power or joining the army.
Enrolling in the Planetary Defense Force was basically a nine-out-of-ten chance of death, so it was better to serve a large family.
This was perhaps the biggest change before and after transmigration.
In the Nest World, it was impossible to change social class through exams; only by gaining the appreciation of a family could one have a relatively safe opportunity for promotion.
Li Nuo was lost in thought when the supervisor's voice came from the headset.
"Li Nuo, I forgot to tell you that you only need to dig out one-tenth of the root system to complete today's task."
Li Nuo breathed a sigh of relief.
So he didn't need to dig out the entire root system; that would be much simpler.
"Roger, Supervisor."
Li Nuo responded and continued working.
In the following few hours, work and rest alternated.
At lunchtime, Li Nuo returned the way he came.
The pod used to transport him had a cleaning function, spraying disinfectant to remove the filth from his body while gliding on the tracks.
The breathing mask, helmet, and shoulder armor were placed in the transport pod, and Li Nuo returned to the locker room in a tight-fitting elastic suit.
Between the locker room and the elevator platform was a large hall, where everyone gathered in the morning.
Now, the hall had been simply renovated, with folding chairs and tables added to the floor, distinguished by nameplates.
This area was designated as the lounge, where meals and lunch breaks were taken, and everyone had their own seat.
Lunch was delivered via the elevator platform and food cart.
Today's lunch was sausage made of synthetic meat, a bowl of synthetic starch, and a clean, white boiled egg.
Leaving aside the juicy synthetic sausage, just the egg alone excited the apprentices who had been busy all morning.
This was a food that only existed in legends!
He never thought that on his first day of work, he would enjoy a delicacy that other Lower Nest residents could not eat in their entire lives.
Li Nuo almost shed tears when he bit into the egg white.
Since transmigrating, he hadn't eaten such normal food in a long time.
Huh?
Why is the yolk purple?
Maybe it's because the chickens and their constitutions are different.
Anyway, the taste is similar to the eggs in his memory, so he should just eat it.
After enjoying the sumptuous lunch, everyone welcomed the lunch break.
Praise Kramm Cigarette Factory.
Each person's folding chair could be unfolded into a single bed, and the lunch break lasted for a whole hour.
Li Nuo didn't have the habit of taking a nap.
After finishing lunch, he applied to return to the cavern and continue the excavation work.
"Wait in the locker room, and I'll get your transport pod ready," the supervisor's voice came from the headset.
Li Nuo casually asked:
"Supervisor, did anyone complete the training mission this morning?"
"Ten people have completed the training mission, and they will be doing combat training in the training room this afternoon. Your movements are not slow, faster than anyone else, but because you are too small, your progress is not as fast as others."
Sure enough, being young is a disadvantage everywhere.
Li Nuo shook his head helplessly.
Returning to the cavern, he threw himself into work.
Following the instructions of the scanner, Li Nuo dug a deep pit near the mushroom, and more and more roots were exposed.
Although the blue-purple light became stronger, the murmuring in his ears remained faint, completely unable to interfere with Li Nuo's sanity.
The scanner screen showed that the excavation progress had reached 9.2%.
Li Nuo turned off the drill and instead used a brush to remove the dirt from the roots.
The excavation progress slowly increased, unknowingly reaching 9.9%.
As the brush scraped away a layer of dirt, a faint white light flashed before his eyes.
Li Nuo gave a soft exclamation and quickly and gently brushed away the dust, and the white light gradually brightened.
It was a silver-white metal card tied to the roots, in new condition, not like it had been buried in the ground for a long time.
The front of the card had a pixelated screen with the number "1" on it.
"Beep beep."
The scanner made a sound.
Li Nuo looked down and saw the words on the screen:
"You have excavated today's scorecard, with a score of 1 point. Excavation progress has reached 10%."
Scorecard?
Did the supervisor deliberately place this card here?
A voice came from the headset:
"Li Nuo, your movements are faster than I imagined. Let's cut the small talk, take the scorecard and return the way you came. The others have already finished their work and are waiting for you in the lounge. After everyone arrives, I want to hold a meeting with you."
I am indeed the last one.
Li Nuo shook his head secretly.
This was unavoidable; he didn't have three heads and six arms, so he definitely wouldn't be as fast as the adults.
Without a word, he left the cavern and returned to the locker room.
The apprentices who had completed the training mission first had already changed their clothes.
They were gathered in the lounge, talking about something.
Seeing Li Nuo return, everyone looked over.
A man in his early thirties said:
"Not bad, kid, you finished today's work all by yourself."
Another person looked Li Nuo up and down, with a half-smile, "Honestly, I don't think your build can last until the end of the training."
Li Nuo looked at the two speakers in confusion, ignoring them.
What does that mean?
Did he offend them?
Why are they being so sarcastic?
"Alright, everyone, now that everyone is here, let's start the meeting."
A bearded man clapped his hands, attracting everyone's attention.
Only then did Li Nuo notice the existence of this person.
Judging from his voice, he was the supervisor of the collection department, about fifty years old, and his forgetfulness was understandable.
Everyone took their seats in the lounge.
The supervisor, with a pipe in his mouth, said while puffing out smoke:
"My name is Robnos, and I was originally a Mycotransporter in the Apothecary Association, collecting pharmaceutical materials in the Lower Nest for many years. Three months ago, I retired from the Apothecary Association and now work for the Kramm family, serving as the supervisor of the collection department for the Kramm Cigarette Factory and Pharmaceutical Factory."
"Let me start with the most important matter. Although most of you already know what I'm going to say, I still need to repeat it."
As soon as he finished speaking, everyone looked at Li Nuo.
Li Nuo frowned slightly amidst the dozens of gazes.
He saw all kinds of emotions on their faces: jealousy, scrutiny, disdain.
He really didn't know what Robnos had said to these people beforehand, so that he would become the focus.
Li Nuo calmed his mind and didn't panic because of it.
