39.FUZE: Hostage?
It seems she received my plea for help through the contract and rushed over immediately.
With the arrival of Clefairy, the true protagonist, the halo of the main character made the death scripts that had just surrounded me vanish in an instant!
With that, why should I panic!? The only thing to watch out for is: the crisis isn’t over yet; now is not the time to spiral 360° and cling to Clefairy’s leg like a sycophant.
I took a step back with Professor Moriarty; with Clefairy as my support, I no longer had to engage in the “fighting” part I was not good at, but could instead focus on watching the script and providing support.
[The attackers of Euclid did not intend to leave just like that!]
Tsk, if it was a passerby sent for revenge, then their audacity to stay this long is simply too bold. With Kephir here, I have nothing to fear; I might as well take this opportunity to get to the bottom of this!
More importantly: throwing the script aside, I can’t shake the feeling that these two aren’t really “confronting” each other, but rather “waiting” for something!
Suddenly!
“Kephir, they’re coming!”
The content of the script is undoubtedly accurate, but what reassures me even more is that the moment she heard my words, Kephir didn’t hesitate at all and immediately took action!
“They’re hiding weapons, it’s short swords!”
My words left the two thugs, who had just drawn their swords, momentarily stunned. Kephir showed no mercy, swiftly knocking one of their weapons away and then facing off against the other.
To say this was merely “a low-level revenge” would be too strange, because until just now, I thought these thugs were at most “small fry.” However, the moment Kephir engaged with them, the script suddenly revealed a lot more information!
“Kephir, both of them are fifth-tier swordsmen; don’t be careless!”
These are no mere small fry; they could be considered named assassins! I refuse to believe that a background character like Passerby S could send such “small fry” my way!
Kephir heard me, she did listen, but…
“It doesn’t matter what tier they are; I won’t let them go!”
Isn’t that a bit too arrogant!? But I like it! If you’re not cool and domineering, can you even call yourself the protagonist!?
With a single hand, she swept her sword, the chill it emitted instantly freezing the weapon of the thug she was clashing with into a solid block of ice, which then shattered with a crisp “crack!” But that wasn’t the end! Following that, Kephir, intending to leave no survivors, pierced the shoulder of the other thug with her sword, sending him stumbling to the ground.
[The identity of the thugs is…]
[Euclid is attacked by the other one!]
I would love to have the chance to continue reading the script, but clearly, this is not the time! Just as Kephir easily subdued one of the thugs, the other one clearly understood the principle of “capturing a hostage before escaping,” and in the next moment of the script, he charged straight at me!
Hmph, I’m not good at fighting, but when it comes to escaping, I’m no slouch!
Having already seen this situation through the script, I turned and dodged before the other could strike! After all, I’m just a novice; by the time my body caught up with my brain’s reaction, the thug’s short sword had just barely grazed past me!
Is that so strange!? The thug who missed me looked as wide-eyed as a bell! There are plenty of things this small fry doesn’t know.
Without a second thought, I grabbed a lamp from Professor Moriarty’s office and swung it at the thug’s forehead!
[Smack]
The crisp sound caught Kephir’s attention. She quickly followed up, kicking the thug who had just been struck and sending him flying, then grabbed my hand and pulled me aside, positioning herself in front of me.
As the protagonist, dealing with a few small fry should be no problem; let alone fifth-tier swordsmen, even if they were seventh, eighth, or ninth-tier, Kephir wouldn’t be afraid.
But the problem is, even the best-laid plans can go awry. Just as Kephir, with a worried expression, was trying to protect me, a scene from the script appeared, accompanied by her anxious shout!
[Professor Moriarty is taken hostage by the thugs!]
So that’s why I felt something was off earlier; it turns out that the Moriarty who had been hiding behind me was suddenly threatened by a third thug who burst in from outside, holding a knife to her neck!
Could a former genius of the grand Yingtian Empire be threatened like this!? But now is not the time to dwell on that.
“Professor!”
Professor Moretti, held hostage by the assailants, was forced step by step backwards towards the door, relying on her captors despite Khfel’s clear reluctance to abandon the two Nowheres he’d just subdued. His attention remained focused on the immediate situation.
Ordinary as it was to see a kidnapper using hostages to threaten the protagonist, the scene before us felt strangely off. Even the script’s subsequent events appeared peculiar to me.
“Professor Moretti counters, villain escapes amid chaos!”
If anything, the peculiar aspect lied in its simplicity and predictability.
With a resigned sigh, the professor, knife at her throat, delicately reversed her cane. A sudden burst of energy, akin to a bullet, pierced the villain’s arm, sending blood spray everywhere. After securing, she swiftly swung her cane, gusts of wind magic sending the three attackers flying without a trace.
Khfel, eager to pursue, was held back.
“Khfel, let them go; the prophecy advises caution, safety first,” I reminded him.
Indeed, the final script’s twist seemed just as peculiar.
“Khfel fails to apprehend the villain, loses them.”
Given the circumstances, I didn’t want her effort to be in vain.
With a pout, Khfel watched the retreating strangers vanish, fists clenching and relaxing before a defeated stamp of her foot. She turned to me, her tone biting.
“Oracle, you’re unharmed? I think those people might be…”
“Skieski’s former goons, I assume.”
Before Khfel could finish her speculation or await my response, Professor Moretti, calm after the deal, spoke up calmly.
“I can still identify the students from Rubyanka.”
Remaining silent, I stood by Khfel’s side, for the sake of the question.
“Is that truly the case, Professor?”
