Iron Cross Fire
Chapter 4
After driving Senval away, Kuster vented for a while inside, and his mood improved.
But he was still a little worried, so he said to Maitian outside:
"Go find a few people to keep an eye on him!"
"This is not good." Maitian hesitated.
"What's wrong with it? If you want to say who I am most worried about, the first one must be him. I told him to go west, and he ran east. I told him to catch a horse, and he went to walk the dog. You know these things, he is a person with a congenital brain debt. If I don't keep an eye on him, I will go to hell to feed pigs."
"Yes, I promise to let him catch a horse for you. If he doesn't do it well, I will let him feed pigs for you." Maitian heard this humorous tone, teased, and left with a gun.
Kuster was a little helpless, and then he laughed. Now there is no one around to disturb him, so he can calm down and think about what to do next.
Kuster made a cup of coffee and lit a cigarette, tasted each, and closed his eyes slightly, looking comfortable.
When he finished his coffee and wanted to get up to do his work, there was a rush of footsteps outside the command post.
It was Gerstoli, who was running and waving, shouting:
"General Kuster, good news!"
Kuster suppressed his anger and said to him:
"My friend, your arrival is bad news for me, so tell me your good news as soon as possible and get out."
He frowned, not understanding what Kuster was saying, but still said excitedly:
"It's the troops, our reinforcements have arrived! There are more than 2,000 of them, and there are many officers! This is exactly what we need. I suggest you go and see them. They are in Gorodok's camp. As for me, I will strictly abide by your orders and get out immediately!"
Kuster did not stop him from leaving, but tidied up his instrument, put on his military cap, walked out of the command post, took away a few Austrian veterans, and walked to Gorodok.
There was no obstruction along the way and soon entered the city. After being inspected, Kuster and his men passed through the saluting crowd.
As soon as Kuster walked a few steps outside, he was surprised to see a figure that he was very familiar with, but his left eye had become an eye patch and his leg was broken. He had to use crutches to barely support himself when he wanted to stand up.
There was no doubt that it was General Franz.
"Go over there, a few soldiers, send him back to the hospital. General Franz was just injured not long ago, how could he come out so quickly?!" Kuster said nervously.
Several soldiers behind Kuster rushed towards Franz, but were soon interrupted by Franz.
"Let's see who dares to come over!" Franz leaned against the wall, supported himself with one foot, supported the wall with one hand, and pointed at the soldiers with a crutch in the other hand.
The people around looked at Franz like this, and no one dared to approach. Only Kuster came towards him and said:
"You are really crazy! Did a defeat make you depressed?"
Franz blushed and gritted his teeth and said:
"Although I am happy to see you are still alive, I am also very unhappy about your words. You have changed, Kuster."
Kust's face was a little unnatural when he heard him say this, and he wanted to speak, but Franz's voice came again.
"You are not the same as before. Look at you now. I can't see any trace of a soldier in you. I don't think such a person can go to the battlefield or even become a general."
"That is better than a disabled person. Moreover, if you are so depressed after only one failure, you can't be called a human being, but a disposable tool."
Kust finally got the chance to speak and fought back with the same sharp words, then put his hand on Franz's shoulder and said earnestly:
"This is our first failure, but many people only have one chance to fail. In comparison, we are very lucky. Cheer up, my friend, we will have many more failures in the future. So before that, please heal your wounds, okay?"
Franz smiled miserably, shook his head, left only a sentence "Good luck", and left without looking back.
Kust watched Franz walk away, took a deep breath, turned around, and led the soldiers to the replenishment troop station.
After arriving at the garrison, several officers saw Kuster and wanted to talk to him, but Kuster was in a bad mood and said that they would talk after they arrived at the division headquarters.
The officers stopped talking and returned to their respective troops, leading them to the 27th Division garrison.
Kuster let the disorganized army say all kinds of dirty words, just smoking, looking at his feet, and walking on the grass like a stroll without saying a word.
It was almost afternoon when Kuster and the supplementary troops arrived. Many people in the division headquarters were watching from a high place, except for the chief recorder Senval.
The soldiers in the garrison cheered expressionlessly, and the idle officers watched with joy.
But Kuster seemed to be unaware of the sound or the look, and continued to walk outside the garrison. Instead, the Austrian veteran beside him held his gun tightly, holding back his anger.
Until the shadow of Guerstori entered his field of vision, he slowly raised his head and said:
"Congratulations, Colonel Guerstori, I have decided to assign you several battalions. As for the specific information, I will tell you at the headquarters."
Guerstori was a little confused, but still pulled him back to the garrison.
As soon as he entered the garrison, he saw a group of new officers.
A man came out from the group of officers, who seemed to be their leader. He came over and said to Kuster:
"General! I'm Drevaer, a lieutenant colonel, Hungarian. There are two majors behind me, and the rest are basically officers who have just graduated from the military academy. They come here with 2,000 soldiers, hoping to fight for the empire with you."
Kust nodded and said:
"Then let the colonel-level officers follow me into the headquarters, and the rest of the officers can find a place to rest."
Then he turned to Gerstoli and said:
"Call all those cowards to the headquarters, we are going to prepare for the battlefield. They are still hiding in a corner crying, how can they look like soldiers!"
Since they were defeated a few days ago, most of these officers who were on the front line were unwilling to face outsiders directly, but stayed in a nest, and no one knew what they were doing.
Kust certainly understood them, but they were about to return to the battlefield, and Kuster had to cheer them up again.
After Gerstoli left, Kuster brought the three new officers to the headquarters and spent every second quietly.
There was a sound of footsteps outside the headquarters. The four looked outside and saw Mai Tian and several soldiers escorting several officers, while Gerstoli was talking to the officers with a bitter face.
Mai Tian and the soldiers beside him pressed the officers to their seats and said with some apology:
"I'm very sorry, these officers are reluctant to come out, but this is the general's order, so I can only tie them up and hope you can forgive me."
Kuster waved his hand helplessly, motioning Mai Tian to go out. Mai Tian didn't waste time, and saluted with the soldiers beside him and stood outside the headquarters.
Next, Kuster should do business.
