Chapter 73 Exciting Quidditch
"So, what are these balls for?"
Harry lowered his head and asked, pointing to the other three balls left in the box.
"I'm going to show you now." Wood said, "Well, you'd better take this -"
He took out two small wooden bats from the box and handed them to Harry and Dahlia respectively. They looked a bit like baseball bats.
"Let me show you what Bludgers are used for," Wood said. "These two are Bludgers."
He pointed at two identical balls. They were shiny black and slightly smaller than the red Quaffle just now.
Harry noticed that they seemed to be struggling desperately to free themselves from the straps that bound them to the box.
"Stand back." Wood reminded the two of them.
He bent down and released a Bludger.
Suddenly, the black ball shot up into the air and hit Harry directly in the face.
Seeing that it was about to break his nose, Harry quickly intercepted it with a short stick and hit it, causing it to jump left and right into the air again.
It whirred and hovered above everyone's heads, and then suddenly rushed in the direction of Dalia.
Snapped.
Before Dalia could swing her bat, the Quaffle changed its direction strangely.
It seemed to be fanned out by something, turned around and rushed towards Wood next to it.
Well, it seems she doesn't have to worry about Bludgers now that she has Stinky Tofu around.
Come to think of it, as a magical animal that flies at super high speeds, Stinky Tofu's dynamic vision is much better than that of humans.
Dalia touched the little Thestral. She was now more and more satisfied with her little pet. No wonder Hagrid had such a high opinion of the Thestral.
In addition to being "unlucky", Thestrals can be said to be almost perfect wizard helpers - obedient, smart, and will not bite people casually.
You know, Hedwig would peck Harry several times when she was unhappy, and there would be marks on Harry's arms and the back of his hands from time to time.
On the other side, Wood showed his basic skills as a top goalkeeper.
Wood suddenly reached out to cover the Bludger and pinned it firmly to the ground.
"See?"
Wood gasped as he stuffed the Bludger into the crate and tied it securely with a leash.
"The bludgers are flying around, and they will automatically attack the nearest target and knock the target out of the sky."
"And the Weasley twins are the beaters of our team - their job is to protect our players from being hit by Bludgers and hit the Bludgers towards the other players - to be honest, they themselves are Like two Bludgers. Bludgers rarely hang around our players, so - you all understand, right?"
"The chaser is responsible for scoring; the goalkeeper keeps the goal; the batter protects his own side and uses the bludger to counterattack." Dalia quickly concluded.
"Very good," Wood said.
"Hmm - have the Bludgers ever killed anyone?" Harry asked, hoping to sound casual.
"Never at Hogwarts. One or two had their jaws smashed, but that was it."
Judging from Wood's tone, it seemed that a broken jaw was not much different from a scrape of skin, he continued.
"Okay, the last player on the team is the Seeker. That's you. You don't have to worry about Quaffles and Bludgers—"
"—unless they knock my brains out."
"Don't worry, the Weasley brothers are more than capable of dealing with Bludgers."
Wood reached into the crate again and pulled out a fourth and final ball.
This ball is very small compared to the Quaffle and Bludger, about the size of a walnut.
It is golden and has small silver wings that are constantly flapping.
"This," Wood said, "is the Golden Snitch, the most important ball of all."
"It's hard to catch it. It's flying so fast you can't see it. It's the Seeker's job to catch it. You have to catch it between the Chaser, the Beater, the Bludgers, and the Quaffle." The ball shuttles back and forth to catch it before the other team's Seeker. If the Seeker of any team catches the Snitch, his team will win an additional 150 points, which is almost a sure win. When the Snitch is caught The game is over when you catch it - that's one of the ways to win."
"One of the ways?" Harry asked curiously, "From what you said, it seems there are other ways to win?"
"Well, for example, shoot down all the Seekers of the other team so that they cannot meet the minimum lineup."
Wood seemed to recall some bad memory, and his expression instantly became painful.
"It's a very barbaric, brutal way, but it's more common on the playing field."
"shoot down?!"
"All...Seekers?"
Dahlia and Harry asked in unison.
The smile on Dalia's face disappeared faster than Harry who began to worry about his own safety.
"Of course, Quidditch evolved from ancient hunting."
Wood sighed. He originally wanted to avoid this topic, but it seemed that he still had to talk about it in the first class.
"Although the rules have been revised a lot in modern times, some traditions are still retained."
"In ancient times, people were divided into many tribes and lived dispersedly, and the wizards of each tribe would fight for food."
"The Quaffle is equivalent to raw meat - is that easy to understand?"
Wood patted the bright red Quaffle, glanced at Harry Hadalia and continued to explain.
"Competing with each other for food, delivering it to the caves of their respective tribes, and in the process, monsters will attack members of the tribe——"
"Yeah, so someone has to be responsible for defeating the monster, or using the monster."
Obviously, this is talking about Bludgers.
"The Golden Snitch——"
"The Golden Snitch is a real-life magical animal, a very small, fast-flying bird."
Wood looked at the golden snitch in the box and whispered with some longing, "For a long time, a real golden snitch will be released in every game as the ultimate reward for the competition between the two teams - there were no points at the time, and catching the golden snitch The side that snitched could get a bonus of 150 gold galleons. However, due to over-hunting and cruelty, people decided to replace the golden snitch with the current golden snitch, and the reward was accordingly changed to points and the game ended."
"I still don't get it, what does any of this have to do with taking down opposing players and what... all the Seekers?"
Dalia looked confused for the first time today. Wood's explanation was reasonable but strange.
"Besides, the reward for the Golden Snitch is a bit too high, right?"
In fact, she had long wanted to complain about the Quidditch rules.
Under normal circumstances, it is difficult to separate the scores on both sides, and in most cases it is the Seeker who has to make the final decision.
This kind of movement, where all hopes are pinned on one person and all members of the team serve one protagonist, makes me feel terrible just thinking about it!
"There are more than 600 fouls in the current Quidditch rules, 90.00% of which are to protect the seeker."
Wood glanced at Harry, patted him on the shoulder, and tried to force out a comforting smile.
"This is because the Seeker can be directly attacked by Bludgers, Quaffles, or even the opposing Seeker."
"In the wizard tribe in ancient times, there was a very important role - the prophet. They could predict the future and guide the direction of the tribe."
"So it is said that in the wizarding wars long ago, prophets and prophets were usually the first targets of attack by both sides."
"And in Quidditch, the Seeker is the incarnation of the prophet, and the Golden Snitch...is the future."
Wood took out the Snitch from the box and spread it out in his hands, watching its thin silver wings slowly unfold.
"Therefore, whoever catches the Golden Snitch catches the future——"
"……prophet."
Harry blinked and subconsciously looked at Dahlia.
How does the prophet sound dangerous? He kind of wanted to change places with Dalia.
No matter how you think about it, a real prophet is more suitable for the role of a seeker, rather than a poor kid like him who can't predict the future.
"cough……"
Dahlia obviously read Harry's eyes.
But this is your fate, my dear little cousin.
"So what's going on with what you just said...all the Seekers?"
"When a Seeker is downed, the team will choose one of the Chasers and Beaters to serve as both."
Wood continued, squatting down and starting to cover the box, as if deliberately trying to avoid Harry's increasingly frightened and confused eyes.
"Each team has three chances - maintaining the Seeker, Beater, Chaser and Keeper - to continue the game."
"In last year's semi-finals, we were defeated by four people from Slytherin House... and lost the game directly."
"But this year I believe you can turn it around and we always win when Charlie is here."
Wood scratched his hair and showed a simple and serious smile.
"After all, people say you're the Boy-Who-Lived."
The big, boy-who-lived? !
Harry froze, then gasped, now finally understanding what he was facing.
Compared to Oliver Wood's confidence, he seriously doubted that Wood was so optimistic about him. Did he think he was a good flyer or a tough guy?
"Okay, now do you have any questions?"
Harry shook his head numbly.
However, Dalia suddenly became excited.
This version of Quidditch... is so exciting!
Harry lowered his head and asked, pointing to the other three balls left in the box.
