AMICITAS Mission Three – Mission Day 124

ARES 3 solar day 125

[07:28] JPL: Good morning Mark, Bruce Wu here. We have prepared a fun project for you and your friends, especially Commander Berry.

[07:41] Watney: For Berry? Appreciate further details?

[07:55] JPL: Please check your inbox for a detailed how-to guide on connecting residential power to your MDV. In short, there are two ways for us to bring you home: either we send you a modified MAV during the Ares 3-B mission (assuming we can build it in time), or you and your The friend would have to trek to Schiaparelli to launch using the Ares 4 MAV. No matter which method is chosen, the MAV will be remotely controlled by Hermes; but we still hope that the MAV can retain an experienced on-board pilot as a backup. Obviously Commander Berry is the most experienced spaceship pilot in the alien world, so we plan to restart the MDV onboard computer and use it as a flight simulator. The positions of the system panel switches will be different, but the flight control logic is exactly the same.

[08:13] Watney: What a great idea! Berry will be so happy! Most of the remaining ones are probably looking forward to it too. Both Dragonfly and Fireball also have pilot experience, and Spitfire has also received relevant training.

[08:27] JPL: Heroes think alike. In addition, we also want them to give some usage feedback, which will also facilitate us to carry out targeted hoof control modifications to the flight control input equipment.

[08:41] Watney: Okay. But there is still a problem: now our habitation module, rover, MAV fuel generator and Friendship spacecraft all rely on the power supply of the habitation area. If we connect the load again, will it exceed the power limit of the power system?

[08:55] JPL: The power supply is indeed a bit tight, but the No. rover, alien spacecraft, and MDV are all equipped with batteries, which should alleviate the load pressure on the system. It is impossible for the fuel generator to run for a long time, and the MDV system will not be on all the time; but you can keep an eye on the operation of the hydrogen fuel cell, and please let us know if you notice that the component shows undervoltage after pm one day.

[09:09] Watney: Got it.

Transcript – Hydraulic Telegraph Switch – ESA Maltimore Center <-> ESA spacecraft AMICITAS

AMICITAS: Amicitas calls Maltimore, communicating via starlight space suit, completed.

ESA: Maltimore calls Amicitas, over.

AMICITAS: Starlight – Leg immobilization removed today. I still feel some soreness in my legs when applying force, but I'm ready to get back to normal work, done.

ESA: Good news received, over.

AMICITAS: Starlight - The current priority: making more magic batteries, improving the seal of the cave farm and creating a new sparkle engine. Need advice on spells for sealing air holes in cave walls so that they become completely airtight. complete.

ESA: What spell did you use when installing the airlock? complete.

AMICITAS: Rewritten Occlusion's "door-coming curse". However, it is very difficult to use this spell on a surface where the caster is not visible. Almost the entire cave wall is covered in crystals of varying sizes. complete.

ESA: Why choose Occlusion’s spell? complete.

AMICITAS: No energy required to maintain. Other spells rely on magic fields that we lack for power, over.

ESA: Yes, we will study it further. Has there been a leak? The seal seems to be in good condition from our end, done.

AMICITAS: The Earth side is worried that the seal will fail and cause the cave to explode. They want us to reduce the air pressure inside the cave by 25% to reduce the pressure on the cave walls and roof structure. Over.

ESA: Confirmed to reduce cave pressure by 25%? That doesn't sound right, over.

AMICITAS: Confirmed, completed.

ESA: Please stand by, experts are being summoned, over.

AMICITAS: Standby. One more question: Is there any progress in research to help humans use magic?

ESA: Tested a variety of solutions, all requiring the assistance of magic components, completed.

AMICITAS: It is recommended to conduct experiments using wooden wands with a small amount of magical biological tissue (e.g. unicorn hair, phoenix feathers, etc.). Inspired by human fairy tales, finished.

ESA: Are there unicorns or phoenixes on Earth? complete.

AMICITAS: No known magical creatures have been discovered. But maybe after a proof of concept, a non-magical alternative could be used, done.

ESA: Hello, Starlight Glimmer. Here’s the lime pie. haven't seen you for a long time. complete.

AMICITAS: Hello Lime. what's up? [1] Finished.

ESA: The sun, the moon, a few asteroids, a space station, a city in the clouds, and many, many more things. But that's not the point right now. complete.

AMICITAS: Is this a bad joke? complete.

ESA: That’s right. ha. ha. complete.

AMICITAS: Ha! You really haven't changed at all. complete.

ESA: Regarding your question about your cave: the increased air pressure in the sealed cave has caused the surrounding rock formations to flex and stretch. Reducing the pressure now will cause the rock to rebound, creating more cracks that may cause leaks. It's pretty bad anyway. complete.

AMICITAS: Got it, Lime. complete.

ESA: Twilight - So no, we're not going to lower the pressure. Any other questions? complete.

AMICITAS: None, over.

ESA: Well, we will continue to study the issue of cave sealing and human wands. We will contact you again through the spacecraft's life support system at twelve o'clock local time, and prepare to receive the operating details for improving the Twinkle engine based on our experimental results. Don't forget to take notes. Communication ends.

Topic: About coming of age

Please make sure not to let Mark see this letter. Here I'm going to explain the possible reasons why he doesn't give you the respect you want, so that you might be able to understand his attitude a little better.

Humans are one of the few creatures in our world that exhibit protective instincts toward animals outside of their own species. This is not universal animal nature. The more similar they are to human children—in fact, simply put, the cuter they are—the more we want to protect them. And you ponies are cuter than any living human child, so you automatically trigger a protective human response.

Mark probably has this problem more than most because he thinks you are depending on him for your life. It's like he accepts you guests into his home, so he also wants to be a responsible and good host.

Based on his report, he believes that you were extremely reckless during space flight and showed no concern for the dangers of the space environment. By human standards, this statement is actually not wrong. We took risks that were, for us, terrifying, and it took eight years to get from the first manned space flight to landing on the moon. The astronauts participating in the mission have to spend at least a year on various targeted training before each launch, but you have gone from being penniless to landing on the natural satellite of your own planet in only about two years. The training time is short. Measured in weeks. You may think that our development speed is too slow; but we will think that you have completely forgotten safety in order to develop rapidly.

Finally, Mark is, or is trying to teach you, how to use English. He was not trained to be an English teacher. His main experience in learning English comes from his childhood experiences, so he will naturally repeat the relevant behaviors he remembers from his childhood when teaching the language to others.

These are the reasons why Mark always (tends to) treat you like children. The question now is, how can you change this situation?

First of all, it goes without saying that angry confrontation is the absolute worst policy. Mark doesn't handle the anger and confrontation of others well, and being polite and agreeable (as we say on Earth) doesn't make him treat you as an adult - it just makes him try to act in his own childish way. Likewise, pranks or rebellious behavior similar to those in your previous photos will backfire as well. In fact, if it goes too far, you may lose Mark's respect for you.

And understand, I can't step in and tell Mark how to treat you. First, I am on another planet; second, I must abide by doctor-patient confidentiality. I won't reveal what you told me in confidence to anyone else, not even him.

So you need to have a calm and serious discussion with Mark yourself to resolve this issue. Don't take a commanding tone, but directly explain to him that you are troubled by his continued behavior of treating you like a child. Just say that to Mark. Mark basically tries to get along within limits with everyone he meets. He was chosen to participate in Ares 3 precisely because of the cohesiveness he brings to the team to bring people together. Once you explain your problem clearly, he will try to correct his behavior.

But I still have to warn you, doing this will have a side effect that you may not like. Mark would often tease and joke with others to deepen their friendship. However, you have not mentioned at all that Mark has said or done anything to you that may have hurt your feelings, not even a wisecrack. I guess Mark is actively restraining his words and deeds, partly because the language barrier hinders his expression, and partly to protect your emotions. If Mark decides to treat you as adults, he may revert to his normal personality. Generally speaking, he does not mean any harm, but he may speak unintentionally and hurt you unintentionally out of ignorance of your cultural background.

If you really want a curse word encyclopedia (dictionary), you can ask Annie to send you one. She can hide it from Teddy and Venkat, and after her oblique photo request, she kind of owes you. In addition, she is also the king of swear words here.

good luck. If you need additional advice, you are always welcome to email me.
