Chapter 217 What is your wish?
Ozwald didn't answer, looking down at the ground. Fay clenched her fists but breathed a sigh of relief.
"I understand." He said, turning away.
"Orders must be obeyed. The same has not changed from then to now. The Empire..." He left these words and walked out of the door.
That night, when Faye got home, Annie had dinner waiting for her.
"Welcome back." Anne greeted him with a smile, and Fay replied tiredly: "I'm back."
"Did something happen?" Anne looked at him with concerned eyes, and Fay replied vaguely: "Ah, nothing." Then sat on the sofa.
"Are you being blamed again?" Anne grinned, and Faye wrinkled her lips: "How do you know?"
Annie laughed: "As long as it's about you, I can guess it."
Faye smiled at her, but her eyes narrowed slightly, and the word "secret" flashed in her mind.
"Well, Annie..." Faye raised her head and looked at Annie.
"What's the matter?" Annie asked, tilting her head.
"What do you think of 'Corpse Man'?"
"How to say..." Annie frowned and thought, but it seemed that it was not easy to give an answer.
"That man's ability is unfathomable. Although selfish and arrogant, he has talents that are allowed by others."
Fay lowered her gaze and continued: "To be honest, I envy her."
The orders of superiors must not be violated. Once violated, you will be severely punished. This is the custom of the empire. She disobeys orders and will not be given leniency even if she is criticized. From the outside, she appears to be free.
From an ethical point of view, for Fay, she is the ideal person.
Faye said sadly, and Anne fell silent.
But she smiled and hugged Fay from behind: "I like Fay." Fay raised his head and looked at her in surprise.
"She is who she is, with good and bad sides. Including abilities, everything is her personality. Of course she is excellent, but I don't really like her personality."
Faye nodded slightly.
"There are many different people in the world, some you love and some you hate. If you lose your individuality, life becomes boring. Although the grass next door looks greener, Fay does have something that that person doesn't."
Anne smiled.
"You are not her, nor anyone else, you are the unique individual Fay." She hugged Fay tightly, and then continued: "I like Fay like that."
Faye scratched her cheek shyly. So, Annie narrowed her eyes and asked, "What's wrong? Do you have any opinions?"
Faye smiled awkwardly and replied: "I'm very happy."
A few days passed and it was already late at night. Faye barely suppressed her unhappy mood and followed Maginot. They were now walking in a small alley that apparently few people passed, located at the back of a busy neighborhood.
"That bastard always comes to places like this..." Fay stared at Maginot's back as he walked into the alley from the shadow of the roof of the building.
Although they were separated by more than twice the normal distance and should not be discovered, due to the special nature of the location, Fay couldn't shake the feeling of worrying whether she would be seen by others.
In the shadows of the alley, there stood an almost naked woman, speaking to passers-by from time to time. Fay couldn't imagine what Anne would say if someone she knew happened to see her.
Suddenly, Maginot stopped. Faye hid and secretly observed her movements, and Maginot began to look around.
"Did...did she find out?" Although Fei felt that it was impossible to be discovered, she still felt a little uneasy in her heart.
Then, Maginot noticed something and entered a building. Fay looked at the sign on the building.
"Canteen Orabi Pavilion".
Although the sign was rusty and faded, it looked like the store was open for business.
"Eating at this time?"
When Faye was hesitating whether to act, she saw a figure approaching the store. A deeply hooded man with a brown cloak.
He kept looking around: "Who...?"
The man turned around instantly, and Fey saw his face clearly, feeling very confused: "Colonel Fariel! Why would he appear in a place like this...?"
Faye started thinking.
Fariel is Gran's direct subordinate, hard-working and highly trusted by Gran. Would such a man go to a small canteen that only drunkards visit?
"You can't judge a book by its appearance. Maybe he came in by chance while he was playing. However, I didn't see him drinking."
The two people appeared at the same time, like an agreed time.
Faye had a guess.
Maginot is Gran's adopted daughter and may have had an affair with him. Fariel is married and has children. This scenario would make sense if the daughter of his direct boss ran away with him.
"What's so good about that girl?" Fey smiled bitterly.
If it were a private matter, he wouldn't want to interfere, but because of his mission, he couldn't stay out of it. Fay hesitated for a while, then looked down at the ground helplessly. A drunk man walked out of the alley and walked towards the bustling street.
"That's it..." Faye sighed and jumped off the roof.
Fariel stood nervously in front of the man. After entering the store, she was guided into the private room. The man in black robes was waiting first. He was petite and wore a hood deeply, so his face could not be seen clearly.
"Sit down." The man said in a low and rich voice, and Fariel walked to the opposite side and sat down.
Silence filled the air.
"'Corpse Man', do you mean that thing..." Even though she was in a private room, Fariel still said in a low voice while looking around.
"What are the falsification of accounts, misappropriation, and disposal of private weapons and equipment?"
Fariel said in a cold sweat, "Hmm, hello..." in a weak voice.
"Humanity has always been greedy."
"I also have my own difficulties." Fariel whispered and bowed to the man: "Please, please keep this matter secret. If I lose my current job, my family will be in trouble."
Corpse Man smiled triumphantly and replied, "That's up to you."
Fariel looked up.
"What is your wish?"
Again the question was met with silence.
Fariel kept silent, thinking about the definition of freedom.
Doesn’t it count as freedom to free one’s former employer from the constraints of a contract and do as he pleases? Such questions appeared in his mind. As if sensing Fariel's difficulty in understanding, "Corpse Man" continued.
"Do you think a beast in chains is free?"
Fariel frowned: "No matter how long the leash is, it cannot change the fact that you are not free."
"That is to say...you want me to help break that chain?"
Fariel shook her head in surprise: "No, it's impossible. Not possible in any case."
