"What did you hear?"

Several people came over, trying to get some clues from her.

"I'm not sure. I couldn't sleep yesterday. About an hour later... no, maybe two hours later." The woman hesitated. "I heard a strange sound, like..."

She folded her sleeves upwards and rubbed them. Since the jacket was made of polyester, it made a slight "crunching" sound.

"Could it be the wind?"

"Yeah, there are a lot of trees here, so it's probably the leaves making the noise."

The woman pursed her lips. After a moment, she said firmly: "I am sure that it is not the sound of leaves."

Her reason was simple. The trees on Xuejia Mountain were towering into the clouds, and even the branches closest to them were several meters away.

She heard the sound coming from nearby. There was nothing in her own tent that could make that sound, and no one was up at night, so the only possible sound was from the tent next door.

After hearing her explanation, the three team members' expressions became solemn.

There were three tents for the five of them. The two ladies lived in one, He's father and a young team member lived in one, and the rest was the deputy captain of the rescue team, who lived in the outermost small tent.

The female team member who was in the same tent with the woman said that she did not hear any sound, and He's father's "roommate" did not react at all.

If He's father wanted to leave the base, he would inevitably pass by the deputy captain's tent. The strange thing was that the deputy captain was also fast asleep.

"Could it be that he left on his own?" He's father's roommate speculated.

If He's father was being held hostage, there would have been some sounds of struggling, but he was not woken up, which means that He's father was most likely doing it voluntarily.

The deputy captain frowned and said, "You mean, that sound was made by his own shoes rubbing against the ground?"

As he spoke, he rubbed the ground with his rain boots, but no sound was made.

The deputy captain leaned over and tried to pick up a handful of soil, but the soil slipped through his fingers.

Just when everyone was puzzled, the woman who heard the sound said, "By the way, was that the sound of him dragging something?"

She took off her handbag and extended the strap so that it could touch the ground.

The woman walked a few steps dragging her handbag, and the zipper on the bag did make faint "click" sounds as it scraped across the soil.

But she soon realized that the voice was too weak.

Not to mention that she was in the tent, even if she was next to He's father at the time, it would be difficult for her to hear any noise.

Unless Mr. He was dragging a very large object, it would make such a loud noise.

"Impossible!" He's father's roommate said first, "After I found out he was missing, I checked and found that our supplies were still in the tent."

This is a bit weird. If Mr. He left the tent voluntarily, why would he choose not to take anything with him?

"Without food and drinking water, he can't survive in the mountains..." the female team member said, "Could it be, could it be that he is looking for death?!"

The deputy captain shook his head and said, "No, he has a child. As far as I know, his son is still in junior high school. How could he abandon his child and commit suicide alone?"

"Where did the sound come from? Nothing was missing, which means he wasn't dragging anything with him." The roommate pondered, "Could it be a fallen branch? Or an animal or something..."
