America 1881: Legend of the West
Chapter 194 The Afterglow of the Sunset
On the edge of the lake.
Hook-nosed Lynch, along with his Pinkerton detectives and a few newly recruited soldiers, appeared not far from the lakeside camp.
After evacuating Roswell, they returned to Lincoln County to repair before re-entering the Chihuahuan Desert.
This time, they bypassed the stone fortress and headed straight to the mountains to the south.
Lynch and his detectives encountered the Nahua tribe. After a fight, they lost some people, but all the Nahua tribe's combat power was destroyed in this battle.
The remaining people who were still alive were tied up and taken to the center of the village.
The Nahua tribe, the only people in the tribe who knew English, had died under the knife of that young man.
After confirming that Chen Jianqiu and the others had been here, Lin Qi put on his gloves.
"Only leave the old man to lead us." Lin Qi picked up the obedient old man and dragged him outside the camp.
"What about the rest?"
"Kill them all!" Lynch said coldly.
He took the old man away from the camp, blindfolded him and blocked his ears.
They walked toward the outskirts of the forest, and behind them, the sound of crying and howling filled the field, and the flames shot into the sky.
Like Chen Jianqiu and others, Pinkerton's detectives first found the Pecos River and then went south along the river.
Although they and the old man couldn't understand each other's language, sometimes guns were better than words.
Under the leadership of the old man, they also found the waterfall and the lake.
But when they could already see Chen Jianqiu's camp by the lake, the old man refused to take a step forward.
Even though Lynch's gun was already pressed against his temple.
The old man knelt on the ground, worshiped and prayed towards the lake from a distance, and kept muttering something in his mouth.
"Boss, there seems to be no one in the camp." Lynch's adjutant handed him the binoculars.
Lynch took the telescope and put it down after taking a look at it.
He pulled the trigger of the revolver in his hand.
The old man's head was penetrated by a bullet and he fell forward to the ground. The blood soaked the soil under his head.
The sound of gunfire echoed across the wilderness.
"Old,, boss!" The adjutant was shocked.
Firing a shot like this is equivalent to informing the enemy that they are coming. Why would the always calm boss do this?
"Let's go." Lin Qi got on his horse and gave the order.
When Pinkerton's group arrived at the camp, they found that there seemed to be no one in the camp.
"Boss, they just left not long ago." The adjutant flicked the bonfire in the camp, and there were still embers in it.
"No, they didn't leave." Lynch said, pointing to the footprints by the lake, "Find someone to go down to the lake and take a look."
Everyone was stunned, a group of people? In the lake? Are they fish?
But Lynch's order seemed unquestionable, so they had no choice but to let the person with the best water skills in their team, who had been a seaside lifeguard, get into the water.
However, when the detective returned to the shore, his words surprised everyone.
"The lake... I found a rope under the lake. It seems that you can go to another place by swimming along the rope."
"You all, get into the water." Lin Qi ordered the dozen or so people under his command.
Everyone, look at me and I look at you. Finally, a detective stood up:
"Boss, some of us don't know how to swim. If we can, we can drown people."
"I don't care about this, why can they do it but you guys can't?" Lin Qi's eyes were a little scary, "Get into the water!"
The detectives had no choice but to take off their clothes one by one and walk into the water.
Those who are not very good at water can only hope that the senior lifeguard can help them at the critical moment.
After Lin Qi watched these people get into the water, he unbuttoned his coat and prepared to get into the water.
However, a voice sounded behind him:
"Lynch!"
Lin Qi frowned, this voice was very familiar to him.
He turned around, and the camp behind him was empty, with no one around.
"Lynch!"
Lynch put his coat back on, took out a cigar from his pocket, and lit it for himself.
A person slowly walked over from the shadow in the direction of the waterfall.
The man was wearing a grey-blue shabby jacket, a light gray scarf around his neck, and a cowboy hat of a similar color.
"Adam Granger? I thought you should be staying with the Chinese guy now." Lynch took a puff of cigarette and exhaled.
"Looks like I've disappointed you, Lynch." Adam raised his head, his face looking even sallower under the setting sun.
"It seems like you don't intend to fulfill your promise." Lynch looked at Adam.
His previous guess was correct, the man in front of him had lied to him.
Adam said nothing and looked at Lynch calmly.
"I thought we had a great time cooperating in Albuquerque and Santa Fe." A sarcastic smile appeared on Lynch's face, "You haven't forgotten who you are, have you?"
"That's because those gangsters deserved their punishment and it has nothing to do with you." Adam replied.
"I'm curious, how would it feel if your good apprentice knew that you were a Pinkerton detective or an undercover agent?" The expression on Lynch's face became even more sarcastic.
"He knows." Adam's expression remained calm, "Ever since I let Astor go on the train, he has known that I was an undercover agent."
"So, he promised to give you gold? No, no, no, he will kill you with one shot." Lynch said.
"It has nothing to do with gold. I'm just tired of this kind of life and your hypocrisy." Adam said slowly, "Jones is not a good person, but you didn't leave any of his men alive except me."
"Some of them were just ordinary cowboys who were still children when they died in my arms."
"Hahahaha!" Lynch laughed crazily, as if he had heard the funniest joke in the world. "A rebellious Pinkerton undercover, talking to me about hypocrisy? It's extremely ridiculous."
"Chen knows what he is doing. He has amazing talents, faces injustice calmly, and challenges the order that you people represent." Adam continued, "What's more, what you are doing now has nothing to do with the order, it is just you. selfish desires."
"So, do you want to judge me?" Lynch looked at the man in front of him, known as the "God of Death," and said, "We all have shooting talents, and we will only end up losing."
"Oh? Really? How many days do you think I have left to live?" Adam finally smiled, "Our era is over, Lynch!"
He faced death openly, as if preparing to meet an old friend.
The ridicule on Lynch's face disappeared, and he stared at the unshaven man in front of him.
If this man is really determined to change things with him, it will be really difficult.
In a duel of this level, there is no winner.
The two stood by the lake as if they were still, about ten meters apart. Their backs were stretched by the afterglow of the setting sun.
They are all waiting.
Lynch is waiting for an opportunity, although he doesn't know when that opportunity will come.
Adam, on the other hand, was waiting for him to draw his gun first.
However, Lynch really waited for this opportunity.
Suddenly, a dark "dark cloud" rose from behind an inconspicuous hill opposite Adam, making a creepy sound.
Lynch caught this moment from Adam's pupils, and he immediately pulled out the revolver from his waist.
In a duel between masters, even a moment's loss of concentration can be fatal.
However, the trigger in his hand had no chance of firing.
"boom!"
Lynch felt like he was stuck in the shooter's state forever, and his thinking stagnated until it disappeared.
A bullet penetrated his forehead and heart.
Lynch fell to the ground, full of wildness, and died by an unknown lake in New Mexico.
Adam put away his gun.
"There is only one way to win in a duel between shooter talents, and that is to rely on instinct to shoot." Adam looked at Lynch's body and laughed at himself, "I guess only that brat will listen."
He slowly walked to his old horse and took out a bottle of Erguotou from the bag on its back.
The old horse lay down for the first time.
Adam slowly sat on the ground, leaning against his old friend, and drank the wine from the bottle one mouthful at a time.
The "dark cloud" composed of bats not far away has drifted farther away and is out of sight.
Adam looked quietly at the wilderness illuminated by the setting sun.
He seemed to see himself more than ten years ago, that bohemian boy, riding a horse with great ambition in the wilderness of the west.
The last of the afterglow disappeared.
Adam slowly closed his eyes.
"That brat, maybe he can really do it."
