I fought back after reselling my engagement
Chapter 37: The General in Trouble Because of His Poor Finances
The two men who were checking the household registration and collecting the boat fare were surprised. Crew member A said, "General, this is a private boat. It is the Yueyang, jointly run by the Cao Gang and a wealthy family in Beijing."
They must collect the ship fare, otherwise they will have to starve. From the capital to Yueyang Prefecture, they have to pass through many places along the way. The Yueyang has only one trip a month, and no one knows how many ships will have to go through to reach Yueyang Prefecture.
Zhen Su had found out several years ago that if he wanted to go to Yueyang Prefecture, he had to take the Yueyang, which was safe and convenient. There were two Yueyang ships, both departing on the 16th of every month. The ship from Yueyang Prefecture went to the capital, and the ship from the capital went to Yueyang Prefecture, and they only departed once a month.
Zhen Su saw that he didn't seem to have any money, so he took out two silver ingots weighing five taels each and paid for it: "I'll pay for him."
Lu Yan didn't bring any money with him, only two taels of silver. After he came back and was conferred the title of general, he had a general's mansion and was rewarded with five hundred acres of fertile land by the emperor. He gave all his savings of more than ten years to his parents.
After my parents got the money, they first bought the unowned government land near Lujiazhuang and turned it into their own sacrificial land. It was easier to get things done with money, so they bought 80 acres of top-quality land and more than 200 acres of medium-quality land. As there were three brothers in the family, they expanded the previous house and moved into a large courtyard.
My parents said that from now on the house in Lujiazhuang would be the ancestral home, and each of the three brothers would have a house in the country, so that no one would be unfair.
The two of them changed to a first-class cabin, which was like a passenger and cargo ship, with guest rooms and cargo holds. The real money-making part was the cargo hold, which was used to exchange goods and services through the canal. Silk and tea from the south of the Yangtze River, porcelain from the Central Plains, and gems from the Western Regions could all be transported.
There are no beds in the lower class cabins. All those who buy lower class cabins sit on the bottom floor of the large cargo hold. The second class cabins are on the second floor, with a large bunk bed inside. Each person has a quilt. Although they are called large bunk beds, they are not real beds. Instead, the cabin is marked with grids and numbered with paint. The size is three feet three inches wide and six feet long, and each grid is the size of a bed.
The second-class cabin is divided into men's and women's berths, with women's berths occupying one-quarter of the space. The men's and women's berths are separated by a hollow wall.
The upper-class cabin is composed of small compartments, each of which is about six feet six in length and width. Half of it is a bed, and the other side is only wide enough for one person to turn around. In front of the bed there is a simple table connected to the wall. The table is retractable and can be folded vertically when folded, and can be lowered when in use by pushing the two clips.
Lu Yan wanted to escort her to Yueyang Prefecture, so she simply dressed herself up as a weak young scholar. The household registration document she took out had "Su Zhen" written on it, and "female" was clearly written on it. When she boarded the ship, the crew members who checked also saw that she was a woman disguised as a man. Many women disguise themselves as men for convenience when traveling.
Everyone who boards the ship must have their household registration documents checked, just like when staying at an inn. There is also a special person to log in and register, and all their names and where they live need to be recorded.
The upper-class cabin was on the third floor. Zhen Su went to the second floor. When he was about to enter the third floor, a slightly plump woman stood at the staircase and shouted, "Go up to the third floor. Please show us your upper-class cabin card."
Zhen Su took room number 11, and Lu Yan took room number 12, the two rooms were adjacent.
The woman glanced at the room number plate and said, "Three meals are provided from the capital to Yueyang Prefecture. You can book a monthly package in advance. The first-class meal is ten taels of silver per month; the middle-class meal is five taels of silver; the inferior meal is three taels of silver."
She pointed to the "notice board" next to the stairs, which stated the charges for three meals a day.
Zhen Su was curious that the passenger ship actually provided food, and three meals a day. The best breakfast provided porridge: the same porridge, soy milk, dumplings, steamed buns, and three side dishes; lunch: steamed buns, rice, two meat dishes and three vegetarian dishes; evening meal: the same porridge, a vegetarian dumpling, a meat dumpling, or a serving of noodles (you can choose between plain noodles and dumplings).
Medium meal: morning food: one kind of porridge, steamed buns, dumplings, and two side dishes; lunch: steamed buns, rice, one meat dish and two vegetable dishes; evening food: porridge, a vegetarian dumpling or a portion of pasta.
The lowest class meal: a bowl of porridge, two steamed buns, and a side dish in the morning; steamed buns (or rice) and one meat (or one vegetable) for lunch; and a portion of porridge or pasta in the evening.
In terms of the time of serving meals, the first-class meals are served two quarters earlier than the middle-class meals, and the middle-class meals are served two quarters earlier than the last-class meals. To put it simply, after the guests in the first-class rooms have been served, it is the turn of the guests in the middle-class rooms, and then the last-class rooms.
You can order a meal or pay per meal. The charge for this meal is just like ordering food, with the price of a steamed bun clearly marked as three coins and a stuffed bun five coins. This price is more than twice as high as outside, and even other dishes are much more expensive than outside.
Next to the woman was a desk, on which sat a middle-aged scholar-looking man. A maid stood in front of the desk, "Three people, monthly package for two people for top-class meals, and six people for bottom-class meals."
The maid handed over the silver bills, and the middle-aged scholar took out a few signs, all of which were palm-sized wooden signs. On the front were the words "Monthly Menu", and on the back were the words "Superior" or "Inferior". The superior meal had gold words, while the inferior meal had ordinary black words.
Zhen Su walked to the table, "Superior monthly meal for two."
Lu Yan was a little embarrassed. This was a last-minute decision, and he didn't have any money on him. "The meal is included. Miss, just order some food for me."
Zhen Su glanced at him and said, "Thank you for escorting me for thousands of miles. I am a top-class meal, so how can I let you eat a second-class meal?"
She didn't care about the twenty taels of silver, as long as she lived comfortably.
They exchanged for two "Monthly Premium Menu Plates", one for her and one for Lu Yan, and they each went up to the third floor, checked the number plates, and found their respective rooms.
Lu Yan said, "Miss, if you need anything, just tell me. I'll be next door."
"Thank you, General."
Zhen Su nodded, pushed open the door and came in. The small compartment was very small, but it was habitable. It was the best room on the ship. The quilts and sheets seemed to have been replaced with new ones. The ship fare was five taels of silver per person, and the total cost of fine cloth quilt covers and sheets like these would not exceed two hundred taels of silver. They would be replaced with new ones when the people changed once a month, and they would be replaced with new ones after the old ones were taken down. In addition, all guests in the superior rooms would get monthly meals, and all the services were excellent.
We boarded the ship at five o'clock in the morning, and at six o'clock, there was a commotion on the ship. The originally deserted cabin was filled with people, and masters and women from wealthy families boarded the ship one after another. The three-story cabins were filled with soft female voices and high-pitched and domineering male voices. The stairs and the private dining table became lively.
The ship's horn sounded and the Yueyang set sail.
Zhen Su stood in front of the window, silently looking at the scenery on the canal bank. She finally left, and left decisively. What happened last night, her father's indulgence towards Zhen Zhen after knowing the truth, made her deeply understand: in her father's heart, she was far inferior to the mother and daughter of the Yu family, and he was even on guard against her because of the truth that her mother died of depression.
In such a loveless home, she became a redundant person in the family. Since she was redundant, she broke away from there and pretended that she had neither mother nor father. Her mother lived in her heart, and although her father was still alive, he had died in her heart.
Her father was not her father, he was the father of Zhen Zhen and her two siblings. He gave them indulgence and fatherly love, but never gave it to her.
Home is where the family is. Her home is not in the capital, because her maternal grandfather is not there, and her uncle is not there either. Even though they are thousands of miles away, her family is her maternal grandfather and uncle.
"If you do good without expecting reward or fame, you can live. If you do good and leave your deeds unnoticed, you will be doomed."
She did good deeds just to avoid disaster and did not want to repeat the disaster that killed her before the age of 23. However, she did not expect that people from Le Dahou Mansion would be watching her, and everything she did after returning to the Zhen family had already been seen by the people in the Rong Mansion.
If she really only had eight years left to live, she would cherish every day that remained, no longer pretending, no longer compromising, but being unrestrained and true to herself.
From now on, she lived for herself and for those who loved her, but these people had no father and no one from the Zhen family.
Goodbye, Beijing!
With a faint smile on her face, she admired the scenery along the canal. Traveling thousands of miles and reading thousands of books shows that traveling can broaden one's horizons, while being complacent and sitting in a well and looking at the world from a perspective of the universe is the most undesirable.
