Traveling through The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
Chapter 8 Pastoral Life
The next month was a dull day. I got up before dawn and took advantage of the cool weather to learn how to take care of the crops with a few brothers who were disguised as farmers. Because there were no pesticides available, weeding and insect removal were labor-intensive. The water for irrigating the land was drawn from the pond next to it. At my request, the brothers caught two mud crabs. However, this thing was not delicious. Even if it was soaked in fruit vinegar, the earthy smell could not be removed. The shell was still very hard. The two axes that Eddie brought were bent. No wonder such a big crab in the game only dropped a piece of leg meat. The crab route was blocked, so I thought of fishing again, but this small pond was not suitable. I had to go to the distant Irinata Lake. The plan was simply rejected by Rigel, but she still brought back a bucket of pickled fish after a "hunt".
I also learned an interesting thing, that is, Rigel actually sells manure to Falkreath. Falkreath's population is declining, and all industries are not prosperous. Corpse Light Farm often cannot get fertilizer, so it sends people to buy it everywhere. However, we have a large population and cannot use up all the manure in our own fields. There is a lot of surplus. The buyer and seller are very tacit. They avoid talking about the source of manure and only ask about the price. Then they exchange money and manure. "Half of the taxes collected by the lord from us is shit money." Eddie said with a sly smile.
After the sun rose, I slipped back to the house to prepare meals. The stove was already built, and I added stir-frying to the recipe. Eddie injured his hand while practicing knife skills, and has been reduced to a chores. The current arrangement is two meals a day. The morning meal is at one or two o'clock in the afternoon, which will be relatively rich, with wine and meat; the dinner is around eight o'clock in the evening, mainly light, with soup. The water source in Skyrim is not very safe. People often bathe and wash clothes in the drinking water source, and even urinate and defecate. People use wine instead of water on a daily basis. I boiled the water and tried to make tea with pine needles, snowberries, thistles, elf ears and juniper berries. The taste is naturally not as good as tea, so it can only be a consolation. However, Rigel thought this was also a quirk of my master Gao Yan.
In the afternoon, Eddie and I would take inventory. I followed the rules of the old restaurant and set up an account book for the storage room. On the one hand, it could monitor the inventory and prevent shortages; on the other hand, after the Rawls incident, Rigel was very suspicious and always worried that someone would steal things. With the account book, it could prevent theft and prove one's innocence to a certain extent. When Eddie and I took the account book to report to Rigel, she waved her hand and seemed nonchalant, but I noticed that she secretly flipped through it before going to bed.
After dinner, it was my study time. Rigel claimed that she taught all the younger brothers how to read, so I was no exception. The language of Skyrim was not too difficult, and the grammar was similar to that of English, except for the letters and pronunciation. I had the foundation of compulsory education, and with Rigel's "encouragement" with punches and kicks, I made rapid progress.
In the Hearthfire Month, the weather began to cool down. Rigel had been "hunting" for seven days this time. I fiddled with the fire and suppressed my worries. After spending time with her day and night, I had a good impression of this bandit leader. She was no longer the NPC in the game who didn't have many roles, but a person with flesh and blood and emotions, and the leader of our team. She would ask me if the base had enough reserves; she would get furious when she found someone stealing skooma, saying that it was the tiger man's urine; she would carefully design the route and time of "hunting"; she would spread all kinds of flowers and plants "harvested" in front of me and ask me what I could do. She didn't always have a stern face. She would complain about Sidgel's increase in taxes and greed, saying that he would use manure to pay taxes next year; she would also seriously ask to compete with Wolf in drinking fruit vinegar, but secretly instruct me to add honey to her bottle.
I went outside and watched the sun set. Tomorrow would be the eighth day. Nothing would happen, would it? Rigel was just an ordinary, strong man. The world was not peaceful now. Dragons, werewolves, vampires, crows, witches, and oathbreakers were all deadly enemies.
"Why aren't you cooking?" Cindy came up behind me quietly, and I broke into a cold sweat. Rigel and Wolfe were both out, and she stayed behind to look after the house.
"Do you have any news about the boss?"
"What's wrong? No one has bothered you for several days. Are you thinking about it?" This girl usually looks very cold, but she was so unrestrained when she spoke.
“It’s not peaceful now.”
"Nonsense, isn't it because of us that things are not going well?"
"Uh... that's not what I meant... a dragon appeared in Helgen, what if..."
"Can't you think of something positive? Can't you walk slower because you've gained so much?" Cindy's eyes flickered. It seemed more like she was trying to convince herself than refuting me.
"Hurry up and cook. Don't let the brothers go hungry. I'll send a few more people out to look for them tomorrow morning."
The twin moons rose into the sky, and the sky darkened completely. I sighed, feeling powerless. I had been seen through the game, and I was aware of the current situation. I should be able to make a difference, but now I can only hide in the countryside, farming and cooking, and I can't even leave this small farm. Among those who have traveled through time, I should be the one who has the worst luck, right? Turning around, Falkreath in the distance was shrouded in darkness, looking gloomy and mysterious.
"Falkreath..." I was shocked by the sudden thought in my mind. This is risky. Will she agree? I need to think about it carefully. "Rigel, please come back safely soon. I have a big plan to tell you."
