Chapter 10 Buying a Horse
"Ah, Jamie, I've been waiting for you for a long time. Hosea just came to me and said he had a horse for sale. We can sell this horse and buy you a new one." Arthur said to him happily when he saw Lin Yan coming over.
Lin Yan walked closer, nodded and said, "I just happened to meet Mr. Matthews, and he has already told me, when are we leaving?"
"Right now." Arthur put down the work in his hands and seemed to be ready.
"Mr. Matthews said we could borrow his saddle temporarily."
"Oh, that's great. It wasn't nice to be squeezed together with you yesterday. Then I'll ride the packhorse I'm selling and you can ride mine. Let's change Hosea's saddle first." After saying that, Arthur walked towards a silver Turkmen horse.
"Relax, Silver Dollar, relax..." Arthur took off the saddle of the horse and comforted it softly.
"Is this horse called Yinyuan? The name suits it very well. It's so beautiful!" Lin Yan couldn't help but admire it as he looked at the sturdy stallion with silver hair.
"Yes, the silver dollar is Hosea's treasure, second only to his hat." Arthur laughed.
Taking off the saddle, Arthur asked Lin Yan as they walked: "Do you think you can ride to town by yourself today? After all, you have just come into contact with these big guys."
"I can give it a try." Although Lin Yan has mastered intermediate riding skills, he can't say that he just started school yesterday and graduated today. So he pretended to be ambiguous and answered.
"Okay, let's give it a try first. Let's walk slowly today."
After Arthur changed Hosea's saddle, Lin Yan and he each rode a horse and leisurely walked up the path leading to Valentine.
"Jamie, you learn really fast. You were able to control the horse steadily on the second day. It took me a whole week to learn how to not fall off the horse when it was running. I fell a lot during that week." Arthur saw that Lin Yan could control the horse skillfully and couldn't help but sighed: "Maybe you are really cut out for this. It's really unfair for you to be in that circus."
"Maybe this is talent. I don't know. I just feel like I have done it before." Lin Yan silently attributed it all to his talent.
"By the way, Arthur, why is there an extra horse in the camp? From Mr. Matthews' tone, I think this horse is not from the gang." Lin Yan became interested in the pack horse for sale, so he asked casually.
"Oh, Hosea just told me that when he was out yesterday, a loud bastard tried to rob him, so he taught the bastard a lesson and then stole his horse."
How could such a blind robber rob these ruthless people? He deserved to be punished. But I still have to thank him. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have gotten my horse so quickly.
"What a poor guy." Lin Yan said with regret.
Arthur turned his head and spat at the roadside and said, "What's so pitiful about a group of robbers, especially those who rob passers-by. I guess he had this idea because he saw Hosea was a well-dressed old man and single. He just didn't expect Hosea to be a beast in sheep's clothing. Hahaha!" When he talked about his own inference, he couldn't help laughing.
"That's why I said he was a poor guy. Not only did he choose the wrong person, but he also lost his mount." Lin Yan said lightly with the corners of his mouth raised.
"Yes, you are right. If it were you, I would teach this kind of person a lesson. Otherwise, they will bully the truly poor people. If I meet him, I might even kill him directly."
Lin Yan grinned, he finally realized another side of Arthur besides his kindness.
They were taking the same route they took yesterday. Post carriages, postmen and passers-by kept passing by them on the road. Lin Yan also consciously increased his riding speed, then continued to accelerate, and finally even overtook some of those who had just passed him.
"Hey, Jamie, slow down. I know you have good talent, but you have to take into account the speed of my packhorse. He can't sustain this speed for so long." Arthur barely caught up with Lin Yan who was leading the way, and shouted behind him.
Lin Yan gently pulled the horse's reins to slow it down, and after Arthur caught up, they continued walking side by side for a while before they could clearly see the entire picture of the town of Valentine.
Arthur took Lin Yan to the stable in the town, where a man who looked like a boss was looking after the horses. When he saw Arthur and the others coming, he put down his work and said to Arthur, "Sir, is there anything I can do for you?"
Arthur dismounted and said, "I want to buy a horse, strong and fast."
When he heard that the man wanted to buy a horse, the other party said attentively: "Then you have come to the right place. I happen to have a few good horses suitable for you." Then he walked closer, looked at the tall and mighty black packhorse beside Arthur, and asked: "What about your horse, do you want to sell it?"
"That depends on what price you offer." Arthur was also a good businessman. He wanted to sell the horse, but he would not sell it until he got an offer from the other party.
"Do you have the relevant documents?" The stable owner, who was stroking the horse's body, turned around and asked him.
Arthur answered simply, "No, there is no document."
The man paused for a moment, then said, "Well, not having the papers will affect my offer, but you're in luck. There's a guy who's been looking for a draft horse like this lately, and he can give me a good price. So how about 40 bucks?"
The other party quoted a price. Arthur thought for a moment, then smiled and replied, "No problem, deal." Then he pulled Lin Yan behind him and said to the stable owner, "Introduce those good horses to him."
The boss was delighted to see that the deal was done. Lin Yan estimated that he could make a lot of money from it. Lin Yan followed him to a compartment, and the stable owner introduced: "Palomino-colored Morgan horse, mare, this is the cheapest, only 5 yuan."
Then he came to another stall and said, "Iron gray standardbred mare, this one's 50 bucks."
He came to the third compartment and said, "A chocolate sand-colored warmblood horse, a stallion. This is the most expensive, and it costs 100 dollars."
5 yuan, 50 yuan, 100 yuan, there is a big difference between these three horses. Lin Yan can see nothing except that these three horses have some differences in body shape and coat color. You get what you pay for. The 5 yuan one must not be taken. It is probably the worst horse. The 100 yuan one is too expensive for me. The horse just sold for 40 yuan. If I want to buy this one, I have to pay 60 yuan. I don’t have that much money. Then I will choose the 50 yuan one. At worst, I can borrow 10 yuan from Arthur first and pay him back when I have money.
Thinking of this, Lin Yan pointed to the iron-gray mare in the second compartment and said, "Let's take this one." Then he looked at Arthur behind him and said, "Sorry, Arthur, can you give me 10 yuan first? I'll pay you back later."
Arthur took out $10 from his pocket and handed it to the stable owner, saying, "No, remember, this is the money you deserve, I'm just keeping it for you." Then he asked the stable owner, "Do you have a saddle? We still need a saddle."
The stable owner's eyes lit up, thinking that this was indeed a big customer. He quickly replied, "Yes, yes, outside, please follow me."
Lin Yan and Arthur were led by the stable owner to the workshop next to the stable. The stable owner pointed to several saddles on the shelf and said, "Choose for yourself. They are all 5 dollars. If you want to add a saddle bag, you have to pay 2 or 4 dollars more depending on the size."
Lin Yan chose a maroon cowhide saddle, and then said to the stable owner, "Just ask for a saddle bag for $2."
"Oh, Jamie, you'd better choose a bigger one. People like us need a bag that can hold a lot of things. You will know later." Arthur didn't care what kind of saddle Lin Yan chose, but gave his opinion on the choice of saddle bag.
Lin Yan originally wanted to save some money, but it seemed that Arthur couldn't save any money in this regard, so he nodded and said, "Okay, I'll listen to you."
The two waited in the workshop for a while, and then they saw the stable owner leading an iron-gray mare with a saddle and saddle bags out. Arthur patted Lin Yan on the back and said, "Go and try it."
Lin Yan did not refuse, and walked to the horse, first touched its mane, and then took the reins handed over by the stable owner. "This strong new horse is yours, don't doubt it, the animals I buy are all very good, I can guarantee this." The stable owner patted his chest and said confidently.
"Oh, by the way, this is the document about this horse." The stable owner handed Lin Yan a folded piece of paper. "In addition, I will give you a new brush as a gift." As he said this, he picked up a brand new brush from the table in the corner of the stable and handed it to Lin Yan.
After putting the documents and brush handed by the stable owner into the saddle bag, Lin Yan rode on with some difficulty. (The difficulty was due to the shoulder injury) He gently squeezed the horse's belly, rode around the stable, and after making a "good" gesture to Arthur, he controlled the horse to stop at the door of the stable again. So Arthur happily paid the stable owner for the saddle and saddle bag, and then took Hosea's saddle from the stable owner and put it on his own horse.
"How is it? Not bad, right?" the stable owner asked Lin Yan who was sitting on the horse.
Lin Yan nodded and said, "It is indeed a good horse."
The stable owner stroked the horse's head, looked into the horse's eyes as if he was chatting with a friend, and said, "Goodbye, buddy. You have to treat this guy well, he will take good care of you for me." After that, he signaled Lin Yan that he could ride the horse away.
Lin Yan and Arthur rode out of the stable side by side. "Where are we going now?" Lin Yan asked with his head tilted.
"Let's go to town and see if there's anything we can do, and see if we can get you a gun," Arthur replied leisurely.
The most well-informed place in town is the pub, so Lin Yan and Arthur, who had just gotten into trouble in the pub yesterday, came to this pub called Smithfield again.
When the two men tied up their horses in front of the tavern and prepared to enter the tavern, a man sitting on a bench in front of the tavern shouted at Arthur: "What are you doing back again? Haven't you caused enough trouble? You beat down half of the people in the tavern and almost took Tommy's life. Do you know that he has been mentally ill since he woke up at night after you knocked him unconscious yesterday?"
Arthur looked at the man and said disdainfully, "Come on, man, this is a tavern, fighting is common, and whether anyone died or not, there's no need to make such a fuss."
Seeing that Arthur did not attack directly, the other party plucked up his courage and continued: "Please respect our town, our tavern, and our people. There were many people who were more ruthless than you before, but we drove them away anyway."
Arthur was almost amused by the other party's naive words. "Oh! Come on, man, if you are beaten, you should fight back. The same goes for you. In my opinion, we are the victims. Is this the way you Valentines treat your guests?"
"In my opinion, you are nothing!" The other party threw down a harsh remark and was about to leave.
Arthur stepped forward and grabbed his arm, pointing at the bruises on his face with his other hand and said, "Look carefully, I'm telling you clearly now that it was your people who started it, and I've been merciful enough. If I had been as cowardly as you were, I would be the mentally ill person you're talking about."
The other party did not argue anymore. He desperately shook off Arthur's hand that was holding his arm, turned into the alley next to him and ran away.
Arthur pointed at the direction the man ran away, turned his head and said to Lin Yan: "See, Jamie? This is how you should treat people who bully the weak and fear the strong. In my opinion, knocking him out with one punch is too easy for him."
Isn't this a typical keyboard warrior or troll? Lin Yan was somewhat disgusted with the other party's behavior of only talking nonsense and shrinking back when the real thing happened, and said in agreement: "That's right, this kind of person deserves to be taught a lesson by the real villains, uh, I mean the villains in a broad sense."
Arthur laughed and scolded: "Come on, even if you say I am a real villain, I will not refute it. In their eyes, we are just that kind of people."
Arthur said as he pushed open the door of the pub. The moment everyone in the pub saw him, they all stopped what they were doing. Seeing everyone's nervous look, Arthur stepped forward, raised his hands, put them on both sides of his head and said loudly: "Relax, I'm not here to fight today." Then he looked at the bartender at the bar and said: "Is this how you treat customers who drink in your pub?"
"Everyone, just continue doing what you are doing. Relax, everything will be fine." The bartender heard Arthur's question and then spoke up to smooth things over.
Lin Yan and Arthur came to the bar. Arthur grabbed a handful of almonds on the bar, threw one into his mouth, and said to the bartender, "Two glasses of Kentucky bourbon." Then he took out $2, pushed it in front of the bartender, and asked, "Do you know where there is a job nearby in town?"
